Chapter 11 - The Two Heirs

The woman stepped through the flames.
Hadley couldn't breathe.
She looked exactly like Evelyn.
Same dark hair.
Same eyes.
Same face.
But she was younger.
Much younger.
She stopped behind the shattered window and stared directly at Hadley.
Then she smiled.
“Hadley.”
Leonardo raised his weapon.
“Stay where you are.”
The woman ignored him.
Her eyes moved to Claire.
Claire's face went white.
“You.”
The woman smiled.
“You remember me.”
Claire backed away.
Hadley grabbed her hand.
“Who is she?”
Claire whispered,
“I don't know.”
The woman laughed.
“You always say that.”
Evelyn appeared behind the broken window.
“Don't listen to her!”
The woman turned.
“Hello, Evelyn.”
Hadley stared.
“Mom?”
Evelyn looked terrified.
The woman smiled.
“You never told her about me.”
Evelyn shook her head.
“You died.”
“No.”
“I watched the fire.”
“You watched the wrong woman.”
Hadley's heart pounded.
“What does that mean?”
The woman looked at her.
“Your mother has spent twenty-six years telling you there were two girls.”
She stepped closer to the window.
“There were three.”
Hadley felt the world stop.
“Three?”
Evelyn whispered,
“No.”
The woman nodded.
“Three babies.”
Leonardo looked at Evelyn.
“You knew?”
Evelyn's eyes filled with tears.
“I knew there were three.”
Hadley stared at her.
“How?”
Evelyn couldn't answer.
The woman laughed.
“Because your mother gave birth to triplets.”
Claire shook her head.
“That's impossible.”
“No.”
The woman pointed at herself.
“I'm the proof.”
Hadley stared at her face.
Something about it was familiar.
Not like Claire.
Not like Evelyn.
Something else.
A memory.
A photograph.
Her grandmother holding a baby.
Three blankets.
Three tiny faces.
Hadley suddenly remembered.
She had seen the photograph once.
Then it disappeared.
“Grandmother knew.”
The woman nodded.
“She did.”
“What was your name?”
She smiled.
“Victoria.”
Leonardo lowered his weapon slightly.
“Victoria.”
She looked at him.
“You've heard my name.”
“I thought you were dead.”
“You've heard that before.”
Hadley looked at Leonardo.
“How do you know her?”
Leonardo didn't answer.
Victoria smiled.
“Your family knew exactly who I was.”
She looked toward Evelyn.
“Your mother did too.”
Evelyn whispered,
“I thought they killed you.”
“They tried.”
“Who?”
Victoria looked at Hadley.
“Your grandfather.”
Hadley's hands trembled.
“Why?”
“Because he didn't want three heirs.”
She glanced at Claire.
“He wanted one.”
Then at Hadley.
“He wanted another hidden.”
Then herself.
“And he wanted me gone.”
Claire stepped forward.
“Why did he choose us?”
Victoria's expression changed.
“Because you were born with different blood types.”
Hadley frowned.
“What?”
“Your grandfather believed blood determined inheritance.”
Leonardo stared.
“That doesn't make sense.”
“It didn't have to.”
Victoria looked toward the burning bakery.
“He was obsessed with lineage.”
Hadley looked at Claire.
“So which one of us is the heir?”
Victoria smiled.
“All three.”
Silence.
“But the ledger said first heir.”
“Yes.”
Hadley remembered the message.
THE FIRST HEIR IS NOT HADLEY.
She looked at Victoria.
“Then who?”
Victoria didn't answer.
Instead, she looked at Claire.
“Ask your sister.”
Hadley turned.
“Claire?”
Claire looked terrified.
“I don't know.”
Victoria laughed.
“She knows.”
“I don't!”
“You were told.”
Claire shook her head.
“No.”
“You were given the necklace.”
Claire touched her neck.
A small gold chain hung beneath her shirt.
Hadley had never noticed it.
Victoria pointed.
“Show her.”
Claire hesitated.
Then pulled the necklace out.
A tiny pendant hung from it.
A black circle.
A vertical line through the center.
The same symbol from the photograph.
Hadley stared.
“You have that?”
Claire nodded.
“Grandmother gave it to me.”
Hadley's breath caught.
“My grandmother?”
“Yes.”
“Why?”
Claire looked at Victoria.
“I don't know.”
Victoria answered.
“Because the necklace belonged to the first heir.”
Hadley stepped closer.
“Then why does Claire have it?”
Victoria smiled.
“Exactly.”
Leonardo looked toward the burning building.
“We're out of time.”
Victoria nodded.
“Yes.”
A siren sounded in the distance.
Leonardo grabbed Hadley's hand.
“We're leaving.”
Victoria stepped away from the window.
“Not yet.”
Leonardo aimed his weapon at her.
“Move.”
Victoria smiled.
“You still don't understand who you're protecting.”
“Hadley.”
“No.”
Victoria looked at Claire.
“Claire.”
Claire looked at her.
“Come with me.”
Hadley stepped between them.
“She isn't going anywhere.”
Victoria's expression softened.
“She isn't your sister.”
Hadley froze.
“What?”
Victoria looked at Claire.
“She is my daughter.”
The world seemed to stop.
Claire stared at her.
“No.”
“Yes.”
Evelyn screamed from inside the bakery.
“Don't tell her!”
Hadley turned toward her mother.
“What?”
Evelyn shook her head.
“Hadley, please.”
Victoria laughed.
“You deserve the truth.”
She pointed at Claire.
“She wasn't born to Evelyn.”
Claire stared.
“Then who is my mother?”
Victoria looked at her.
“I am.”
Claire stepped backward.
“No.”
“Yes.”
“That's impossible.”
“You were taken from me.”
“By whom?”
“Your grandfather.”
Claire's eyes filled with tears.
“Why?”
“Because he wanted to control me.”
Leonardo stepped forward.
“You were one of the triplets.”
Victoria nodded.
“I was the third.”
“Then why don't the records show you?”
“Because your grandfather erased them.”
Hadley looked at Evelyn.
“You knew.”
Evelyn nodded.
“I knew.”
“And you let Claire believe you were her mother?”
“I raised her.”
“That isn't what I asked.”
Evelyn's tears fell.
“I loved her.”
Claire stared at Evelyn.
“You're not my mother?”
Evelyn couldn't answer.
Claire looked shattered.
Hadley reached for her.
Claire pulled away.
“Don't.”
“Claire.”
“I need to think.”
Victoria stepped closer.
“You don't have time.”
A loud explosion came from inside the bakery.
The second floor collapsed.
Fire spread across the roof.
Leonardo grabbed everyone.
“Move!”
They ran across the street.
A black SUV screeched around the corner.
Three men jumped out.
Leonardo drew his weapon.
“Get down!”
Gunfire erupted.
Hadley dropped behind a parked car.
Claire crawled beside her.
Daniel pulled Evelyn behind a wall.
Leonardo returned fire.
One attacker fell.
The others ran.
Then everything became silent.
Hadley looked at Claire.
“Are you hurt?”
Claire shook her head.
“No.”
“Your necklace.”
Claire touched it.
Still there.
Hadley stared at the pendant.
“Why does it have that symbol?”
Claire whispered,
“I don't know.”
Victoria appeared behind them.
“You do.”
Claire turned.
Victoria crouched beside her.
“You were told never to remove it.”
Claire stared at her.
“By whom?”
“Your grandfather.”
Hadley felt a chill.
“Why?”
Victoria looked at her.
“Because the necklace contains a key.”
Leonardo stepped closer.
“To what?”
Victoria answered,
“The original archive.”
Daniel went pale.
“No.”
Victoria looked at him.
“Yes.”
“What archive?”
“The one your father spent twenty-six years trying to destroy.”
Hadley stared at the necklace.
“What's inside?”
“Everything.”
“The ledger?”
“More than that.”
“Names?”
“Names.”
“Records?”
“Records.”
“Proof?”
“Enough to bring down everyone.”
Leonardo looked at Victoria.
“Where is it?”
Victoria looked at Claire.
“She knows.”
Claire shook her head.
“I don't.”
Victoria pointed to the pendant.
“Open it.”
Claire hesitated.
Hadley watched.
The tiny pendant had a seam down the middle.
Claire pressed it.
The pendant opened.
Inside was a miniature photograph.
Hadley leaned closer.
It showed three newborn babies.
Underneath were three names.
Hadley.
Claire.
And a third name.
Hadley stared.
“Victoria.”
Victoria nodded.
“But that isn't all.”
She turned the photograph over.
There was another sentence.
Only one child was born first.
Hadley frowned.
“What does that mean?”
Victoria looked toward the burning bakery.
“It means your grandfather lied about the birth order.”
Leonardo stepped forward.
“Then who was born first?”
Victoria looked at Hadley.
Then Claire.
Then herself.
Her expression became unreadable.
“The answer is in the archive.”
Daniel suddenly grabbed Hadley's shoulder.
“Run.”
She turned.
“Why?”
He pointed toward the street.
A black sedan had stopped.
An elderly man stepped out.
Hadley had never seen him before.
But Daniel recognized him.
He whispered,
“No.”
Leonardo turned.
His face went pale.
The old man looked directly at Hadley.
Then he smiled.
“Little bird.”
Hadley's blood turned cold.
Her mother screamed from behind them.
“Hadley, don't go near him!”
The old man raised one hand.
Two armed men appeared behind him.
Then he spoke.
“I'm sorry it took so long to meet my granddaughter.”
Hadley stared.
Her grandfather.
Alive.
And he was holding a photograph of the three babies.
He lifted it slowly.
May you like
Then he said,
“Now that you've found your sisters, it's time you learned which one of you I actually came to collect...”
