Chapter 6 - Midnight at Vale Headquarters

Harper entered Vale headquarters for the second time that day.

This time Adrian was beside her.

At 11:49 p.m., the lobby was empty.

No guards.

No employees.

Only the reflected city lights on black marble.

Harper carried her encryption key.

Adrian carried nothing visible.

Marcus and Elias had entered through the underground service corridor.

Elias had returned ten minutes after disappearing, bleeding from a cut across his shoulder.

Julian’s men had taken Elena.

Elias had tried to stop them.

He failed.

Adrian had believed him.

Harper wasn't sure she did.

But they had no time.

“Eleven minutes,” Harper whispered.

Adrian looked at her.

“You stay behind me.”

“We've discussed this.”

“I remember losing.”

Despite everything, she smiled.

It lasted one second.

The elevator opened.

Daniel Kessler stood inside.

“Harper only.”

Adrian stepped forward.

Daniel lifted a phone.

Onscreen, Elena and Evelyn remained tied to chairs.

“No.”

Harper touched Adrian’s arm.

“I’ll go.”

“Absolutely not.”

“Adrian.”

She looked directly at him.

“Trust me.”

Those words stopped him.

For eight months, trust had been the thing between them.

Broken.

Questioned.

Missing.

Adrian slowly stepped aside.

Harper entered the elevator.

Daniel pressed twelve.

“You look well,” he said.

Harper stared forward.

“You betrayed him.”

“I survived him.”

“No. You sold him.”

Daniel smiled.

“Morality from the woman who stole his ledgers?”

“I stole evidence after someone threatened my unborn child.”

“And now you're bringing us the key.”

The doors opened.

Julian waited.

Elena and Evelyn sat nearby.

Both alive.

Harper exhaled.

“Let them go.”

Julian smiled.

“Key first.”

“No.”

His expression changed.

Harper continued.

“You need both keys. Elena’s and mine.”

“I have Elena’s.”

“Then you still need me to authenticate mine.”

That was a lie.

Julian didn't know it.

Harper had discovered the truth in the car.

The device required a fingerprint.

Not hers.

Adrian’s.

Evelyn had hidden that detail intentionally.

Julian held out his hand.

“Key.”

Harper approached.

“Evelyn first.”

Julian nodded.

Daniel untied Evelyn.

“Elevator.”

Evelyn walked toward it.

When she passed Harper, she whispered one word.

“Three.”

Harper didn't understand.

Evelyn entered the elevator.

Doors closed.

Julian pointed toward the archive room.

“Now.”

Harper followed.

The master terminal was hidden behind the wall.

Julian inserted Elena's key.

“Yours.”

Harper inserted hers.

ACCESS PARTIAL.

Julian frowned.

“What?”

Harper looked at the screen.

THIRD AUTHORIZATION REQUIRED.

She understood Evelyn’s whisper.

Three.

Julian stared.

“Whose?”

Harper smiled for the first time.

“Adrian’s.”

Julian slapped the desk.

“You knew?”

“No.”

It was true.

Julian turned toward Daniel.

“Bring him.”

The office doors opened.

Adrian entered voluntarily.

“I saved you the trouble.”

Julian raised a weapon.

Adrian stopped.

Harper's heart hammered.

“No.”

Adrian looked at her.

“It's okay.”

Julian laughed.

“How touching.”

Adrian approached the terminal.

“Mother first.”

Julian looked at Elena.

Then nodded.

Daniel untied her.

Elena crossed toward Adrian.

For one brief moment, mother and son stood face-to-face.

“I'm sorry,” she whispered.

Adrian touched her shoulder.

“Go.”

She left.

Julian motioned with the weapon.

“Finger.”

Adrian placed his thumb on the scanner.

The screen changed.

MASTER ARCHIVE UNLOCKED.

Thousands of files appeared.

Julian smiled.

Then the screen flashed again.

TRANSFER INITIATED.

His smile disappeared.

“What did you do?”

Adrian looked at Harper.

She understood.

He hadn't unlocked it for Julian.

He had released it.

“To whom?” Julian shouted.

Adrian answered.

“Everyone.”

Elias stepped from the adjoining corridor.

“Federal prosecutors. Investigative journalists. Internal affairs. Every agency outside Dominic’s payment network.”

Julian aimed at Elias.

Marcus emerged behind Daniel.

“Don't.”

Everything froze.

Harper stood between worlds.

The empire Dominic Vale had built was dissolving digitally around them.

File after file transferred.

Julian stared at Adrian.

“You're destroying everything your father gave you.”

Adrian's answer was quiet.

“He gave me nothing worth keeping.”

TRANSFER COMPLETE.

Julian's shoulders fell.

Sirens became audible outside.

Not one vehicle.

Dozens.

Daniel lowered his weapon first.

Marcus took it.

Julian did not surrender so easily.

He grabbed Harper.

Adrian moved.

Julian pressed the weapon near her side.

“Stop.”

Everyone froze.

Harper's heart slammed.

Adrian's voice became terrifyingly calm.

“Let her go.”

“You chose her over everything.”

“Yes.”

The answer came without hesitation.

Julian blinked.

Perhaps he had expected negotiation.

Adrian continued.

“Whatever you think you're taking from me, take it. The organization. Money. Buildings. My name. Let Harper go.”

Harper stared at him.

Julian laughed.

“You think that makes you different from Dominic?”

“Yes.”

“How?”

Adrian looked at Harper.

“Because she gets to choose whether she stays.”

Something shifted inside Harper.

Not forgiveness.

Not yet.

Something stronger.

Possibility.

Elias moved slightly.

Julian noticed.

His grip changed.

Harper acted.

She dropped her weight and twisted away.

Adrian crossed the distance instantly.

Marcus disarmed Julian.

No shot.

No blood.

Only the weapon striking marble.

Agents poured onto the floor seconds later.

Julian was handcuffed.

Daniel too.

Elias raised his hands voluntarily.

Marcus stepped aside.

Harper leaned against the desk.

Adrian came toward her.

“Are you hurt?”

“No.”

“The baby?”

“She’s fine.”

Then Harper felt something.

Warmth.

She looked down.

Adrian followed her gaze.

A puddle spread slowly across the marble beneath her shoes.

His face went white.

“Harper?”

She stared at him.

Then a contraction seized her.

She gripped the desk.

“Oh.”

Adrian looked horrified.

“What?”

Harper breathed through the pain.

“My water just broke.”

For perhaps the first time in his adult life, Adrian Vale panicked.

“Now?”

Harper almost laughed.

“No, Adrian. I scheduled it for Thursday.”

Another contraction came.

Adrian shouted for an ambulance.

Marcus actually smiled.

Elena rushed back into the room.

Evelyn appeared behind her with federal agents.

Everything blurred.

Sirens.

Questions.

Handcuffs.

Adrian's hand around Harper's.

They reached the lobby.

Paramedics were waiting.

Harper was placed on a stretcher.

Adrian followed.

A federal agent blocked him.

“Mr. Vale, you can't leave yet. We need your statement.”

Adrian looked ready to move the man physically.

Harper squeezed his hand.

“Adrian.”

He turned.

“Stay.”

His face fell.

“You want me to stay here?”

“I need you to finish this.”

“What about you?”

“Your mother is coming.”

Elena nodded.

Adrian looked torn apart.

Harper touched his face.

“Finish it so our daughter never has to come back here.”

The paramedics moved her toward the ambulance.

Adrian stood beneath the lights of the lobby.

The bag of returned ledgers remained on the floor where the nightmare had started hours earlier.

Harper was almost outside when an agent ran toward Adrian.

“Mr. Vale.”

Adrian turned.

“We found another file in the master archive.”

“What file?”

The agent hesitated.

“It concerns Harper Quinn.”

Harper heard her name.

She looked back.

The agent handed Adrian a printed page.

Adrian read the first line.

His expression changed.

“Harper.”

Something in his voice made her stop.

“What?”

Adrian looked at the document again.

The file had been created before Harper ever worked for him.

Before they ever met.

Before she ever found the ledgers.

And at the top of the page, beside Harper’s name, Dominic Vale had written two words:

FIND HER.
