Chapter 5 - The Woman Beside My Husband

Ethan Cole had been dead for five years.

At least that was what Claire had believed.

There had been no funeral she attended.

No body she saw.

Only a message from Vanessa.

My brother died overseas. I don't want to talk about it.

Claire had respected the grief.

That memory became grotesque now.

Ethan stood outside Walter’s hospital room wearing a gray suit and carrying no flowers.

Claire stepped into the hallway.

“You’re alive.”

“Yes.”

She slapped him.

The sound cracked through the corridor.

Ryan flinched.

Adrian did not interfere.

Ethan rubbed his cheek.

“I deserved that.”

Claire stared.

“Five years.”

“Yes.”

“Vanessa told me you were dead.”

“I asked her to.”

Claire looked toward Ryan.

He had gone still.

“Your brother?” he asked.

Claire turned.

“You didn't know?”

“Know what?”

“Vanessa is Ethan’s sister.”

Ryan stared at Ethan.

Then at Claire.

“You knew Vanessa before me?”

“I knew Ethan. Vanessa was seventeen the last time I saw her before we married.”

Ryan’s face changed.

“She told me she met you at a charity event.”

Claire gave a humorless laugh.

“Apparently Vanessa told everyone different versions.”

Ryan looked at Ethan.

“What the hell is going on?”

Ethan exhaled.

“I introduced you to Claire.”

“No. We met at the Parker conference.”

“Because I put both of you on the same panel.”

Ryan frowned.

The memory returned.

A last-minute speaking invitation.

A networking dinner.

Claire laughing at his terrible joke near the hotel bar.

He had called it fate for years.

Ethan had arranged it.

“Why?”

Ethan looked at Claire.

“Because you were brilliant and lonely.”

Claire’s face hardened.

“And Ryan?”

“Ambitious and useful.”

Ryan stepped forward.

“Useful for what?”

Ethan’s eyes moved toward Walter.

“To build a company.”

Ryan laughed bitterly.

“I built the company.”

“No,” Ethan said. “Claire had the model. You had sales ability. I thought together you could build something neither of you could build alone.”

Claire folded her arms.

“And then?”

“Then you fell in love.”

“You say that like it ruined your plan.”

“It complicated it.”

Ryan's voice sharpened.

“What plan?”

Ethan reached into his jacket.

Adrian immediately shifted closer.

Ethan noticed.

“It’s paper.”

He removed a folded document.

Seven years old.

A preliminary partnership proposal.

Claire recognized it.

She had written half of it.

The original structure included three founders.

Claire: 45%.

Ryan: 30%.

Ethan: 25%.

But Ethan had withdrawn before incorporation.

Or so Claire believed.

“You said you didn't want equity,” she whispered.

“I changed my mind.”

“After we incorporated?”

“Yes.”

“Why didn't you tell me?”

“Because Ryan did.”

Claire turned slowly.

Ryan looked genuinely confused.

“I did what?”

Ethan smiled faintly.

“Perhaps you really don't remember.”

“I've never seen this.”

“You met me at the Hudson Hotel three weeks after the incorporation papers were signed.”

Ryan's face tightened.

“No.”

Ethan opened his phone.

An old photograph.

Ryan sitting across from Ethan in a hotel lounge.

Timestamped.

Seven years earlier.

Claire stared at Ryan.

“What did you discuss?”

Ryan looked at the image.

“I don't know.”

Ethan answered.

“My exit.”

Claire’s throat tightened.

“What exit?”

“Ryan told me the company could not support three controlling personalities.”

Ryan shook his head.

“That sounds like something you made up.”

Ethan laughed.

“You offered me one hundred thousand dollars to walk away.”

“I didn't have one hundred thousand dollars.”

“Claire did.”

Claire froze.

Ryan looked at her.

Ethan continued.

“You told me the money came from Claire’s family and that she had approved buying me out.”

Claire stared at Ryan.

“Did you?”

“No.”

Ethan’s expression changed.

“Ryan.”

“I said no.”

Ethan reached into the folder.

A check copy.

$100,000.

Bennett Holdings.

Claire recognized the signature.

Her signature.

Except she had not signed it.

She stepped closer.

“This is forged.”

Ryan stared.

“I didn't forge anything.”

Ethan looked between them.

“Then someone did.”

Ryan suddenly thought of Vanessa.

Claire saw it.

“So did I,” she said.

Ethan looked away.

Claire's stomach turned.

“You knew.”

“I suspected later.”

“How much later?”

“Two years.”

“And you disappeared?”

“Yes.”

“Why?”

Ethan's face hardened.

“Because I discovered Vanessa had built an entire financial operation around your company.”

Ryan looked at him.

“My Vanessa?”

Ethan almost laughed.

“Your Vanessa?”

Ryan reddened.

Claire raised a hand.

“Stop. Explain.”

Ethan leaned against the wall.

“My sister grew up watching me talk about Mercer Strategy. I was angry. I felt cheated. I told her Ryan stole my place in the company.”

Ryan said, “I didn't.”

Ethan nodded reluctantly.

“I know that now.”

Claire stared.

“Vanessa believed you?”

“She worshiped me when she was younger. She started working in finance. Then she found Ryan.”

Ryan’s mouth tightened.

Claire looked at him.

“When?”

“Three years ago.”

“You told me eighteen months.”

Ryan said nothing.

Claire closed her eyes.

Three years.

The first hotel charge.

The late calls.

The conference in Miami.

All the pieces.

Ethan continued.

“Vanessa approached Ryan intentionally.”

Ryan exploded.

“No.”

“She did.”

“No. We met through work.”

“She arranged it.”

Ryan looked sick.

Claire almost felt sorry for him.

Almost.

Ethan took out his phone.

A message thread.

Vanessa to Ethan.

He took the bait. He loves anyone who makes him feel important.

Ryan stared.

Another.

If I get close enough, I can access the old files.

Another.

He doesn't even notice when I forward things to myself.

Ryan sat down.

Claire read the messages.

Her hands remained surprisingly steady.

“So she used him.”

“Yes.”

“And then?”

Ethan swallowed.

“Then she stopped listening to me.”

Claire looked up.

“What does that mean?”

“She liked the money. The access. Ryan.”

Ryan stared at the floor.

Ethan continued.

“My original plan was to prove Ryan had cheated me and recover equity.”

“By breaking into company records?”

“Yes.”

“You could have called me.”

“I was ashamed.”

“So instead you lied about dying?”

Ethan looked away.

“I had debts. Legal problems. People looking for me.”

Claire shook her head.

“This gets worse every sentence.”

Walter called weakly from the room.

“Claire.”

She went inside.

He looked exhausted.

“I knew Ethan was alive because Samuel found him.”

“You knew about Vanessa too?”

“Not at first.”

“When?”

“Three years ago.”

Claire closed her eyes.

“So everyone knew before me.”

Walter’s voice broke.

“I wanted proof.”

“I needed truth.”

“I know.”

Claire sat.

Her anger suddenly felt heavy.

“Dad, why didn't anyone trust me with my own life?”

Walter had no answer.

That hurt most.

Outside, Ryan confronted Ethan.

“You set Vanessa on me.”

“I introduced an idea to her. I did not tell her to sleep with you.”

Ryan grabbed his jacket.

Adrian moved instantly.

“Let go.”

Ryan did.

Ethan straightened his collar.

“You want someone to blame. Get in line.”

Ryan’s fists clenched.

“Where is she?”

Ethan hesitated.

“I don't know.”

“You’re lying.”

“No.”

“Then why did she leave with you this morning?”

Ethan frowned.

“She didn't.”

Ryan stared.

“My doorman saw her with a gray-haired man wearing glasses.”

Everyone turned toward Samuel.

Samuel lifted both hands.

“It wasn't me.”

Claire stepped back into the hallway.

“Then who?”

Ethan’s face changed.

“Describe him.”

Ryan did.

Ethan went pale.

“No.”

“What?”

Ethan opened his phone.

He found a photograph.

An older man.

Gray hair.

Glasses.

Claire did not recognize him.

Ryan did.

He had seen the man twice at investor dinners.

“Who is that?”

Ethan swallowed.

“Vanessa’s real employer.”

Claire felt the corridor grow colder.

“Name.”

“Gordon Price.”

Adrian’s expression changed for the first time.

Claire noticed.

“You know him.”

Adrian nodded.

“He used to run acquisitions for Vale Capital.”

Ryan stared.

“Used to?”

“I fired him six years ago.”

“Why?”

“Fraud.”

Silence.

Ethan looked at Adrian.

“Then you know what he does.”

Adrian’s jaw tightened.

“Yes.”

Claire looked between them.

“What does he do?”

Adrian answered.

“He finds distressed companies before anyone knows they're distressed.”

“And?”

“He makes sure they become more distressed.”

Ryan slowly stood.

The hidden debt.

Vanessa.

The loans.

The forged documents.

Claire understood.

“This wasn't about stealing money.”

Adrian nodded.

“No.”

“It was about lowering the company’s value.”

“Yes.”

“So someone could buy it.”

“Yes.”

Ryan stared at Ethan.

“Who?”

Ethan looked terrified now.

“I never knew.”

Adrian pulled out his phone.

“I can find out.”

Before he could dial, Ryan’s phone rang.

Vanessa.

Everyone froze.

Ryan answered on speaker.

“Where are you?”

Vanessa was crying.

“Ryan, don't hang up.”

“Where are you?”

“I made a mistake.”

Claire closed her eyes.

Ryan said, “Come back.”

“I can't.”

“Why?”

“Because Gordon knows Claire found everything.”

Claire stepped closer.

“Vanessa, where are you?”

Silence.

Then Vanessa whispered, “Claire?”

“Yes.”

“I’m sorry.”

“For which part?”

A sob.

“All of it.”

Claire’s face did not change.

“Where are you?”

Vanessa gave an address.

Adrian recognized it.

“Vale Tower.”

Claire looked at him.

“What?”

Vanessa's voice shook.

“Gordon has a meeting upstairs.”

“With who?”

“I don't know.”

“Why are you there?”

“Because he told me if I don't finish this today, he’ll give the bank everything.”

“What everything?”

Vanessa began crying harder.

“The documents that make it look like Ryan stole the money.”

Ryan went white.

Claire said, “Stay where you are.”

“I can't.”

“Vanessa.”

“He's coming.”

Footsteps sounded over the phone.

Vanessa whispered.

“Oh God.”

Then another voice appeared in the background.

Male.

Calm.

“Give me the phone.”

Vanessa breathed once.

The line went dead.

Adrian looked at Claire.

“We need to move.”

Claire grabbed her bag.

Ryan followed.

“No.”

Claire turned.

Ryan’s face had lost all arrogance.

“If those documents frame me, I’m coming.”

Claire studied him.

For seven years, she had carried his fear before he had to feel it.

Today she let him carry his own.

“Fine.”

They reached Vale Tower twenty minutes later.

Security cleared Adrian immediately.

The elevator climbed.

Floor 47.

Then 48.

Then 49.

At 50, the doors opened.

Vanessa stood alone in the hallway.

Mascara streaked beneath her eyes.

Ryan stepped out.

“Vanessa.”

She looked at him.

For the first time, there was no seduction in her face.

Only shame.

“I'm sorry.”

Claire stepped out behind Ryan.

Vanessa looked at her.

Then she pointed toward the conference room.

“He’s inside.”

“Gordon?”

Vanessa nodded.

“With someone else.”

“Who?”

“I don't know.”

Adrian moved toward the glass door.

Vanessa grabbed his sleeve.

“Wait.”

He stopped.

“What?”

“He has the original acquisition agreement.”

Adrian’s face tightened.

“What acquisition agreement?”

Vanessa looked at Claire.

“The one that says Mercer Strategy was already sold.”

Claire stared.

“Sold to whom?”

The conference-room handle turned.

Everyone went silent.

The door opened.

A man stepped out.

Ryan recognized him first.

May you like

His knees nearly gave way.

Because the buyer was the last person any of them expected.
