Chapter 9 - The Choice He Never Expected

Adrian stared at the note.
“My father is dead.”
“So was Thomas Vale,” Charlotte said.
Nobody laughed.
Daniel explained that years earlier, Adrian's father had used a distinctive block handwriting when he wanted instructions delivered anonymously.
But that didn't mean he was alive.
Someone could be copying him.
The location on the note was an abandoned DeLuca warehouse.
Adrian contacted investigators.
This time, he didn't go alone.
He didn't hide evidence.
He didn't attempt to solve the problem privately.
Charlotte noticed.
“You're learning.”
“Painfully.”
At the warehouse, investigators found no ambush.
Only a metal case.
Inside was an old recording.
Adrian's father appeared on screen.
The date was six months before his death.
He looked ill.
Tired.
Ashamed.
“Adrian,” he began, “if you're seeing this, then Samuel has probably done exactly what I feared.”
Adrian sat motionless.
His father confessed that he had discovered financial irregularities shortly before Elena died.
He confronted Samuel.
Samuel convinced him Adrian was preparing to destroy the company.
In anger, Adrian's father authorized men to confront his son and scare him.
He never authorized sabotage.
When Elena died, he realized his mistake had created the opportunity.
He spent his final months gathering evidence.
“I failed you,” the recording said.
Adrian looked away.
Charlotte took his hand.
“I spent my life believing control could protect this family. It did the opposite.”
The older man's voice weakened.
“If you inherit anything from me, Adrian, don't inherit that.”
The recording ended.
For a long time, nobody spoke.
Adrian finally stood.
“That's it.”
Charlotte looked at him.
“What?”
“The secret.”
There was no final hidden mastermind.
No resurrection.
No deeper conspiracy.
Only years of fear, pride, manipulation, and silence.
Samuel had exploited all of them.
Adrian's father had made a terrible decision.
Elena had paid the price.
And everyone left alive had spent five years feeding the lie by refusing to trust one another.
The evidence was turned over.
Samuel was formally charged with multiple financial offenses and crimes connected to the sabotage that caused Elena's death.
Daniel cooperated.
Thomas testified.
Victor provided records.
For the first time, the DeLuca family stopped protecting its reputation and started telling the truth.
Weeks passed.
Charlotte returned to her life.
But not exactly the old version.
Adrian began appearing at Bellamy's.
At first, his visits caused chaos.
Customers recognized him.
Employees whispered.
Charlotte ignored all of it.
“You want coffee?” she asked during one visit.
“Yes.”
“Four dollars.”
He handed her a hundred.
She handed it back.
“Four dollars.”
“I don't have anything smaller.”
“Then there's an ATM across the street.”
Adrian stared.
“You're making me cross the street for coffee?”
“Yes.”
He went.
The cook laughed for five straight minutes.
Adrian returned with four dollars.
Charlotte poured the coffee.
“See? Character development.”
“You enjoy this too much.”
“Yes.”
Their relationship developed slowly.
Charlotte insisted on it.
She wanted to know Adrian without emergencies.
He discovered she sang badly while cleaning.
She discovered he secretly loved old detective movies.
He learned she hated roses.
She learned he couldn't cook anything more complicated than eggs.
Sofia began visiting.
Victor did too.
The first dinner involving Adrian, Victor, and Sofia was painfully awkward.
Charlotte attended.
Nobody yelled.
That counted as progress.
Marco eventually apologized for his brother.
Adrian told him he didn't owe an apology for another man's choices.
That mattered.
One evening, several months after the alley, Charlotte and Adrian walked behind Bellamy's.
The same brick walls.
The same dumpsters.
Charlotte stopped.
“Here.”
Adrian looked around.
“Unpleasant memories.”
“I don't know.”
She smiled.
“Some were okay.”
“You hit my teeth.”
“You were difficult to rescue.”
“You called me Tommy.”
“You're never letting that go?”
“Never.”
Charlotte leaned against the wall.
“Did you really think I was your girlfriend for even one second?”
“No.”
“Wow.”
“You looked terrified.”
“I was.”
“But you walked toward me anyway.”
Adrian stepped closer.
“That was the moment.”
“What moment?”
“The moment I knew I'd never forget you.”
Charlotte's smile faded into something softer.
Adrian reached into his pocket.
Her eyes widened.
“Don't.”
He stopped.
“What?”
“If that's a ring, Adrian DeLuca, put it away.”
His expression was priceless.
“Why?”
“Because we've been dating four months.”
“Five.”
“That's not better.”
He slowly removed his hand.
Empty.
Charlotte narrowed her eyes.
“You didn't have a ring.”
“No.”
“You were messing with me.”
“Yes.”
She shoved his shoulder.
He laughed.
Then kissed her.
A normal kiss.
Maybe that was why it felt extraordinary.
Later that night, Adrian drove Charlotte home.
Before she got out, his phone rang.
Marco.
Adrian answered.
His expression changed.
“What happened?”
Charlotte immediately knew something was wrong.
Adrian listened.
Then looked at her.
“We'll be there.”
“What?”
He ended the call.
“Sofia found something among Elena's belongings.”
Charlotte waited.
Adrian didn't speak immediately.
“What?”
“A sealed envelope.”
“For who?”
Adrian looked almost afraid to answer.
“For you.”
They drove to the estate.
Sofia waited in the library.
An envelope rested on the table.
Charlotte recognized Elena's handwriting.
CHARLOTTE HAYES.
Her fingers trembled as she opened it.
Inside was a single page.
And attached to it was a photograph Charlotte had never seen.
Her father.
Elena.
And a little girl.
Charlotte.
She stared at the photograph.
Then she began reading.

The first sentence made her stop.
Charlotte, if Adrian ever finds you, there is something neither of you knows about the night your father saved my life...
