SHADOWS OF THE FAMILY WILL / Chapter 2 / 3

Chapter 2 - THE TANGLED WEB

The rain poured relentlessly over the Vance Private Cemetery three days later. Black umbrellas lined the hill as corporate elites, corrupt politicians, and high-society sycophants gathered to pay their respects to Arthur Vance. But behind the mournful expressions lay a bloodbath of corporate maneuvering. Vance Global Logistics stock had plunged 18% in seventy-two hours amid rumors of the altered will and internal warfare.

Marcus stood at the grave site, dressed in a tailored black suit, holding Lily’s hand. Across the open grave stood Richard and Julianne, flanked by three high-powered trial attorneys in sharp suits.

As soon as the casket was lowered into the earth, Richard stepped toward Marcus, ignoring the lingering guests. "Enjoy your little victory while it lasts, Marcus," Richard hissed softly under his breath. "Pendelton has been relieved of his duties. We’ve filed an emergency injunction in Manhattan Chancery Court freezing all trust assets based on mental incapacity and elder abuse."

"You can file whatever you want, Richard," Marcus replied calmly, not even bothering to look at him. "The trust was drafted five years ago, notarized by an independent state judge, and verified by three independent forensic psychiatrists. Father knew you’d try this the moment he died."

Julianne leaned in close, her perfume sickly sweet. "You think you're so smart, don't you? But you forget who holds the board of directors. The board meets at nine o'clock tomorrow morning. They won't accept a convicted felon—or a disgraced son—as their chairman. We have the proxy votes, Marcus. You own paper; we own power."

"We'll see about that tomorrow," Marcus said, turning his back on them and walking toward his black SUV.

Inside the vehicle sat Sarah Lin, a brilliant young corporate investigator and former federal prosecutor whom Marcus had hired three months prior. She handed him a tablet filled with financial ledgers and satellite imagery.

"They're moving fast, Marcus," Sarah warned. "Julianne made three wire transfers last night totaling twelve million dollars to a shell corporation registered in Panama. The recipient account is tied directly to Senator Thomas Hayes—the chairman of the Maritime Transport Committee."

"She’s buying political immunity," Marcus muttered, scrolling through the transactions. "What about my mother's disappearance twenty years ago? Did Arthur’s last words mean anything?"

Sarah sighed, opening a hidden directory on her screen. "I dug into the old maritime police archives. The night your mother's yacht went down off the coast of Rhode Island, there was another vessel registered nearby. A private charter owned by Julianne's family business before she married Arthur. The investigation was shut down within forty-eight hours by orders from the governor's office."

Marcus’s knuckles turned white against the edge of the tablet. "So Julianne didn't just marry my father for his money. She removed my mother to get into the house, framed me to clear the inheritance path, and pushed Arthur to his grave."

"It gets worse," Sarah added. "Lily’s medical records... the DNA testing Arthur ran before he died. He didn't just match her to you, Marcus. He matched her to a living relative database in a private psychiatric facility in Zurich, Switzerland."

Marcus stopped cold. "My mother is alive?"

"Someone under the alias 'Catherine Smith' has been funded by an anonymous offshore account for nineteen years," Sarah revealed. "The payments stopped three days ago—the exact day your father died."

"Julianne found out," Marcus realized instantly, horror striking his chest. "She stopped the payments to cut off the trail, or worse... to eliminate her."

"We have to deal with the board meeting tomorrow first," Sarah urged. "If Richard takes control of Vance Logistics at 9:00 AM, he will execute an emergency sale of the European division. The Zurich facility is owned by a subsidiary of that division. If he sells it, 'Catherine Smith' vanishes forever."

The next morning at 8:55 AM, the top floor of the Vance Tower in downtown Manhattan was a battleground. Twenty board members sat around an oval glass table. Richard sat at the head, smiling triumphantly, while Julianne sat to his right.

"Ladies and gentlemen," Richard announced, tapping his pen on the mahogany table. "Due to the unfortunate passing of my father and the legal invalidity of the recent claims made by my brother, I move to appoint myself as Acting Chief Executive Officer effective immediately."

"Seconded," Julianne said smoothly.

"All those in favor—" Richard began.

The double doors of the boardroom swung open with violent force. Marcus walked in, flanked by four federal agents wearing dark blue jackets with gold lettering across the back: IRS-CRIMINAL INVESTIGATION.

The board members gasped, several standing up in panic.

"What is the meaning of this intrusion?!" Richard shouted, jumping out of his chair. "Security! Clear this room!"

"Sit down, Richard," the lead federal agent commanded, pulling out a badge and a stack of federal arrest warrants. "Richard Vance, you are under arrest for federal wire fraud, tax evasion, and money laundering exceeding eighty million dollars."

"This is absurd! You have no proof!" Richard yelled, his face turning pale.

Marcus stepped forward, placing a USB drive on the center of the table. "Every transaction you made through the Cayman accounts using my forged signature was tracked. Three days ago, we gained access to the master server through Father's private key. The IRS has every receipt, Richard. Including the payments you made to bribe the state inspectors during the 2018 port disaster."

Richard fell back into his leather chair, trembling uncontrollably as agents stepped forward, pulling his arms behind his back and clicking heavy steel handcuffs around his wrists.

"Julianne!" Richard screamed as he was hauled away. "Do something! Call the lawyers!"

Julianne sat frozen, her mask of composure shattering into pieces. She looked up at Marcus with pure venom. "You think you've won? You have nothing! You can't prove a thing against me!"

Marcus leaned down close to her ear, his voice icy and calm. "I don't need to prove the financial fraud against you, Julianne. Because ten minutes ago, Swiss Federal Police raided the Bellevue Clinic in Zurich. They found my mother. And she just woke up."
