Chapter 1 - The Bloodline of Deceit

"Get your trash out of my house, Mom! You're nothing but a pathetic leech, and Dad was completely right to strip your name off the deed!"

Brandon’s harsh voice pierced through the pouring rain as he threw a battered leather suitcase onto the mud-soaked driveway. Standing beside him on the covered porch of the sprawling suburban estate was Eleanor’s husband of twenty-eight years, Mark, along with his twenty-five-year-old mistress, Julianna. Julianna held a crystal glass of champagne, leaning against Mark with a triumphant, malicious smile.

Eleanor stood in the driveway, soaked to the bone, her trembling fingers clutching her chest. Just hours before, she had discovered that Mark had spent the past three years surreptitiously transferring all their joint marital assets, properties, and retirement funds into Julianna’s offshore accounts. When Eleanor confronted Mark, her own adult children—Brandon, twenty-six, and Chloe, twenty-four—did not side with the mother who had sacrificed her entire youth and career to raise them. Instead, enticed by Mark’s promises of trust funds and luxury sports cars, Brandon and Chloe had turned on Eleanor with unbelievable savagery.

"Brandon, please..." Eleanor choked out, tears mixing with the freezing rain. "I raised you. I gave up my career as an architect so you and Chloe could have everything. How can you treat me like this?"

"You didn't give up anything, you weak old woman!" Chloe barked from behind her brother, holding her designer handbag. "Dad built this empire. You were just a glorified housekeeper who let herself go. Julianna actually brings value to Dad's life. Now get off our lawn before we call the police for trespassing!"

Mark stepped forward, his eyes cold and void of any former affection. "Sign the unconditional divorce waiver, Eleanor. If you sign it now, I'll give you five thousand dollars in cash to find a motel. If you don't, I'll use my legal team to destroy whatever tiny reputation you have left, and you won't get a single dime."

"You took everything, Mark!" Eleanor cried out. "Even the heirloom jewelry my late mother gave me!"

"That jewelry looks much better on Julianna," Mark sneered, tossing a damp paper envelope onto the wet grass. "There’s two hundred dollars. Consider it severance for twenty-eight years of mediocrity."

Devastated and heartbroken, Eleanor collapsed to her knees in the mud. She could hear the cruel laughter of her children and her husband as the massive iron gates swung shut, locking her out of the life she had spent nearly three decades building.

Drifting aimlessly through the rainy streets of the city, Eleanor felt her soul shattering into a thousand pieces. With nowhere left to turn, she sought refuge at a small diner downtown. Sitting in a corner booth, shivering violently, she was approached by Richard, a charismatic forty-five-year-old developer who had frequented her former social circles.

Richard feigned overwhelming sympathy. "Eleanor! My god, look at you! What did that monster Mark do?"

Over the next three months, Richard played the part of a knight in shining armor. He rented her a modest apartment, brought her flowers, listened to her heartbreaks, and showered her with romantic promises. Eleanor, battered by betrayal and desperate for genuine human warmth, allowed herself to fall deeply in love with Richard. She believed destiny had finally shown her mercy.

When Eleanor received a modest inheritance from an estranged aunt’s estate—roughly three hundred thousand dollars—Richard convinced her to invest every single penny into a high-yield real estate venture he was managing.

"Trust me, darling," Richard whispered, kissing her forehead. "We will build our future together. You'll never have to worry about money or betrayal again."

Two weeks after she transferred the funds into Richard's company account, Eleanor went to his office to celebrate. She found the building completely vacant. Richard’s phone number was disconnected, his social media profiles deleted, and the bank account emptied. Richard was a professional scammer who targeted vulnerable, wealthy divorcees. He had taken her final lifeline and vanished into thin air.

Once again, Eleanor was left penniless, emotionally destroyed, and stranded on the cold streets of the city. Sitting on a park bench under the winter sky, staring at a faded photograph of her newborn twins from twenty-five years ago—a tragedy where one twin had been pronounced dead at birth while Brandon survived—Eleanor gripped her chest. The stress, grief, and double betrayal triggered a severe heart attack. As darkness closed in on her vision, Eleanor collapsed onto the frozen pavement, abandoned by the entire world.
