Chapter 9 - The Confession

Adrian killed the bedroom lights.

“Down.”

Margaret froze.

Evelyn crouched beside the bed.

Adrian called Marcus silently and shared the address.

Richard and Charles entered the house.

They heard the front door close.

Margaret whispered, “There's a back staircase.”

“Where?”

“Closet.”

They moved.

A narrow service staircase descended behind the kitchen.

Adrian sent Evelyn first.

Margaret followed.

He remained behind.

Evelyn grabbed his sleeve.

“No.”

“I'll be behind you.”

“That is exactly what people say before doing something stupid.”

Despite everything, he almost smiled.

“Go.”

They reached the kitchen.

Footsteps upstairs.

Then Richard shouted.

“Margaret!”

Evelyn stopped.

“Keep moving,” Adrian whispered.

The back door was fifteen feet away.

Charles appeared through the dining room.

“Don't.”

He held no weapon.

His face looked destroyed by fear.

“Charles,” Margaret whispered.

“I'm sorry.”

“Move,” Adrian said.

Charles shook his head.

“He'll kill all of us.”

“Then help us.”

“I can't.”

“You already did for nine years.”

Charles looked at Evelyn.

“I never touched your father.”

“But you watched.”

His eyes closed.

“Yes.”

Evelyn absorbed it.

“Why didn't you tell anyone?”

“Cowardice.”

The same word Vanessa had used.

Maybe cowardice was the real engine beneath half the evil in the world.

Not hatred.

Not greed.

People simply deciding their safety mattered more than someone else's life.

Richard appeared at the dining-room entrance.

Gun raised.

“Well.”

Nobody moved.

“You've assembled everyone for me.”

Adrian stepped slightly in front of Evelyn.

Richard laughed.

“Still doing that?”

“Doing what?”

“Playing hero.”

“You wouldn't understand.”

Richard's expression hardened.

“Give me the ledger.”

“Federal agents already have copies.”

“Then you're lying.”

Adrian smiled.

Richard's eyes flickered.

“You wouldn't be here otherwise.”

“We came for Margaret.”

Richard looked at her.

“You disappoint me.”

Margaret stood straighter.

“You murdered Thomas.”

“Prove it.”

“I saw you push him.”

Richard went still.

Evelyn looked at Margaret.

“You saw?”

“Yes.”

Margaret was crying.

“I saw everything.”

“Then why did you tell police you left earlier?”

“Because Richard threatened you.”

Evelyn's anger faltered.

“He knew where you went to school. He knew your route home. He showed me pictures.”

Richard shrugged.

“A practical conversation.”

Margaret's voice shook.

“I thought silence would keep her alive.”

Evelyn looked at Richard.

“You destroyed everyone around you.”

“No. They destroyed themselves. I simply gave them choices.”

Charles spoke suddenly.

“You never gave choices.”

Richard turned.

Charles had taken out his phone.

A recording screen glowed.

Richard's face transformed.

“You idiot.”

He raised the gun.

Adrian lunged.

The shot cracked.

Evelyn screamed.

Charles fell.

Adrian hit Richard against the wall.

The gun slid across the floor.

Margaret kicked it away.

Richard struck Adrian.

They crashed through a side table.

Then Marcus and federal agents burst through both entrances.

“Down!”

Richard froze.

Adrian released him.

Agents tackled Richard to the floor.

Evelyn ran to Charles.

Blood covered his shoulder.

“Stay still.”

He looked at her.

“Recording.”

“I know.”

“Use it.”

Paramedics arrived.

Charles survived.

Richard was arrested.

But the victory lasted only twelve hours.

The next morning, federal prosecutors informed Adrian they had a problem.

Richard's attorney claimed the confession recording was coerced and ambiguous.

Margaret's testimony was compromised because money had been planted in her account.

Charles had spent years accepting hush payments.

Vanessa had participated in document destruction.

Ben had lived under a false identity.

And Adrian himself was named throughout the financial ledger.

Richard had spent years ensuring every witness looked dirty.

They needed independent evidence.

Something physical.

Something Richard could not explain away.

Evelyn remembered the microcassette from her father's box.

They had never listened to it.

The fire had interrupted them.

The box had been taken into federal custody.

Agents retrieved it.

They found an old recorder.

The tape began with Thomas's voice.

“Arthur, if this works, he'll admit everything.”

Then Arthur:

“Keep the recorder hidden.”

Footsteps.

Richard's voice.

Clear.

You should have taken the money, Thomas.

Thomas replied:

“I'm going to federal investigators.”

Then Richard:

“You won't leave this building.”

Evelyn gripped Adrian's hand.

The recording continued.

An argument.

Charles pleading.

Arthur shouting.

Then Thomas:

“Get away from me.”

A struggle.

A scream.

A heavy impact.

Arthur shouted:

“Richard!”

Silence.

Then Richard spoke.

Calm.

Terrifying.

“If anybody tells the police what happened, Adrian dies next.”

Adrian closed his eyes.

There it was.

Murder.

Threat.

Motive.

Recorded nine years earlier.

Evelyn cried quietly.

For the first time, her father's story no longer belonged to lies.

Richard's indictment expanded that afternoon.

Murder.

Kidnapping.

Fraud.

Money laundering.

Witness intimidation.

Conspiracy.

But one question remained.

Who killed Arthur Wexler?

The tape did not answer that.

Ben believed Richard did.

Helena suspected it.

Adrian needed certainty.

Federal investigators reopened Arthur's death.

His medical records were examined.

A toxicologist found something missed four years earlier.

Arthur had suffered a heart attack.

But it might have been chemically induced.

The medication involved required access to his prescriptions.

Only three people had regular access.

Helena.

Adrian.

And the estate's private physician.

Dr. Samuel Grant.

Adrian stared at the name.

Grant had certified Arthur's death as natural.

Marcus searched current records.

Grant had retired one year after Arthur died.

He now lived three states away.

Agents went to his home.

Nobody answered.

The back door was open.

Inside, the house had been emptied.

On the dining table, investigators found one envelope.

It was addressed to Adrian.

May you like

Inside were four words.

YOUR MOTHER KNOWS WHY.
