Remember This Moment / Chapter 8 / 15

Chapter 8 - The File With My Name

My file contained the reason Victor had targeted me first.

When I was ten, I accidentally witnessed a meeting.

I didn't remember it clearly.

Children don't always understand what they're seeing.

But Victor remembered.

Samuel explained.

I had walked into Dad's study during a company retreat and seen Victor exchanging documents with a foreign shipping broker.

I picked up one page after they left.

Then I drew on it.

A horse.

Dad found the drawing later and placed it in a box because he saved everything I made as a child.

Victor realized the original contract might still exist.

For twenty-two years, he believed it could connect him directly to the first illegal transaction.

That was why Samuel disappeared.

To convince Victor the document had been destroyed.

Dad created the Claire file afterward.

He stored every childhood drawing there.

The missing box contained the evidence.

Victor had it.

But Marcus smiled when he heard that.

“Original paper?”

Dad nodded.

“Then he still has to destroy it.”

Victor hadn't won.

He had given us a target.

Security cameras captured him leaving through an adjacent building.

Nathaniel coordinated with agents.

I remained with my family.

Madison arrived unexpectedly.

Still technically on her wedding night.

She had changed into jeans and one of Ethan's jackets.

Dad stared.

“You should be with your husband.”

“He's parking.”

She looked at him.

“And you should stop telling your daughters where they're supposed to be.”

Daniel laughed.

Dad almost protested.

Then stopped.

Progress.

Madison hugged me.

She apologized again.

This time I told her the truth.

“I don't need you to keep apologizing. I need you to stop laughing next time someone else is being humiliated.”

She nodded.

“I will.”

Ethan joined us.

Then Marcus received a lead.

Victor had chartered a private aircraft.

Departure scheduled before dawn.

The airport was forty minutes away.

Agents moved.

We followed from a distance.

At the private terminal, Victor never arrived.

The plane was a distraction.

Samuel understood first.

“He's going back.”

“Where?” Dad asked.

Samuel looked at him.

“Home.”

The Bennett estate.

Victor knew every entrance.

Every security code.

Every room.

Mom was there.

Dad called.

No answer.

Again.

Nothing.

We raced back.

The front gates were open.

Lights burned throughout the mansion.

Dad ran inside before agents cleared it.

“Eleanor!”

No response.

We found Mom in the library.

Alive.

Tied to a chair.

The Claire file sat on the desk.

Dad rushed to her.

Marcus stopped him.

“Wait.”

A wire ran beneath the box.

Not explosives.

An alarm trigger.

Opening it would send Victor a signal.

Samuel examined the room.

“He wants Richard to open it.”

Dad stared.

“Why?”

I noticed an old family portrait above the fireplace.

Victor had slashed Dad's face.

Then I saw writing on the wall.

ONE BROTHER LIED.

ONE BROTHER RAN.

ONE DAUGHTER REMEMBERED.

ASK HER WHAT SHE SAW.

I stared at the words.

Something shifted inside my memory.

The retreat.

Dad's study.

Victor.

The broker.

The paper.

And someone else.

A woman.

I remembered her hand taking mine.

I remembered her whispering:

“Claire, don't tell Daddy.”

I turned toward Mom.

Her face had gone white.

Dad noticed.

“Eleanor?”

Mom began crying.

I stepped closer.

“You were there.”

She shook her head.

“Claire—”

“You were in the room.”

Dad stood slowly.

Mom looked at him.

Then at me.

“Yes.”

The entire room went silent.

May you like

And my mother whispered:

“But Victor wasn't the man I was protecting...”
