Chapter 5 - The Price of Silence

Declan stared at his uncle.

"Martin."

Martin Gallagher entered slowly.

Brutus positioned himself between the old man and Mave.

Martin noticed.

"Interesting."

Declan's voice hardened.

"You raised me."

"I did."

"My father told me not to trust you."

"Your father distrusted everyone near the end."

Mave watched Declan.

The discovery had wounded him more deeply than anything that happened at the restaurant.

This wasn't an enemy.

This was family.

Martin had attended birthdays.

Graduations.

Funerals.

He had taught Declan how to drive.

How to negotiate.

How to survive after Patrick died.

"You knew about the ledgers," Declan said.

"Of course."

"Did you kill him?"

Martin sighed.

"No."

"Everyone keeps saying no."

"Because Patrick's death was more complicated than one murderer and one victim."

Martin sat.

He explained.

Victor Dane had stolen the money.

Holloway had hidden transactions.

Martin discovered the scheme.

Instead of warning Patrick, he demanded a share.

Patrick found out.

The brothers fought.

On the night Patrick died, Martin had followed him.

He wanted the ledger.

Their confrontation forced Patrick to leave angry.

Dane's people followed Patrick afterward.

The fatal crash happened before Patrick reached the police.

"So you didn't kill him," Declan said.

Martin looked down.

"But I helped put him on that road."

Silence.

Declan's fists tightened.

Mave moved closer.

Not touching him.

Just there.

Martin looked at her.

"You're Anna's daughter."

"Yes."

"She was always stubborn."

"Apparently it's hereditary."

Martin almost smiled.

Then Brutus growled.

Mave looked at the dog.

He wasn't watching Martin.

He was watching the hallway.

Footsteps.

Evan entered.

Behind him came police officers.

Martin closed his eyes.

"So that's it."

Declan looked at him.

"No."

Martin opened his eyes.

"You tell them everything."

Martin laughed bitterly.

"And destroy what's left of this family?"

Declan's answer came quietly.

"The lies already did that."

Martin was taken away for questioning.

Not arrested for Patrick's death—not yet.

Evidence would decide what happened next.

For the first time in decades, facts rather than fear would determine the story.

But Mave's life remained broken in more ordinary ways.

She was unemployed.

Her rent was overdue.

Her mother's medical bills remained.

And by noon, exhaustion finally won.

Declan drove Mave and Anna home.

Before leaving, he stood awkwardly in their doorway.

A man comfortable commanding rooms suddenly looked unsure what to do with his hands.

Mave noticed.

"What?"

"I owe you."

"No."

"You saved Brutus."

"He saved himself."

"You found the collar."

"Accident."

"You found both ledgers."

"Technically your father's dog did most of that twenty years ago."

Declan exhaled.

"Do you argue with everyone who tries to thank you?"

"Mostly men in expensive suits."

He smiled.

A real one this time.

It transformed him.

For one dangerous second, Mave forgot how tired she was.

Then he reached into his jacket.

She immediately pointed at him.

"If that's money, I'm closing the door."

He stopped.

It was money.

Mave stared.

Declan slowly put it away.

"Noted."

"Good."

"What about work?"

"What about it?"

"You need a job."

"I'll find one."

"I own restaurants."

"Absolutely not."

"You haven't heard the offer."

"I don't need to."

"Why?"

"Because working for you sounds exhausting."

Brutus, sitting beside Declan, leaned toward Mave.

She scratched his head.

Declan looked betrayed.

"He likes you more than me."

"Better judgment."

Declan laughed.

Anna watched from the couch.

Mave saw her mother's expression.

"Don't."

"I didn't say anything."

"You were thinking loudly."

Declan left.

Mave slept for nine hours.

When she woke, the world had changed again.

The Copper Anchor story had spread.

Not the secret ledgers.

Not yet.

The dog incident.

A guest had filmed part of it.

The video showed Mave kneeling before Brutus while the room stood frozen.

It had gone viral locally.

Millions of views were not involved.

But enough people had seen it that her phone contained dozens of messages.

Most called her brave.

Some called her stupid.

One animal behavior specialist messaged to say she had handled the situation remarkably well.

Then another message arrived.

From Arthur.

COME TO THE COPPER ANCHOR. PLEASE.

Mave almost deleted it.

Then another.

I FOUND SOMETHING ABOUT HOLLOWAY.

She went.

The restaurant was closed.

Police tape blocked the private room.

Arthur waited at the bar.

"I owe you an apology."

"You owe me a paycheck."

"That too."

He slid an envelope toward her.

Her final wages.

Plus something extra.

Mave pushed the extra back.

Arthur nodded.

"I figured."

"What did you find?"

He produced employment records.

Twenty years old.

Anna's name.

Eleanor's.

Holloway's.

Martin Gallagher's.

And one more.

Claire Gallagher.

Declan's sister.

Mave stared.

"She worked here?"

"Summer job. Twelve years ago."

The same year she disappeared.

"What happened?"

Arthur handed her another document.

An incident report.

Claire had reported seeing someone tampering with the restaurant's old accounting archive.

Two days later, she disappeared.

Mave's pulse quickened.

"Who did she report?"

The name had been blacked out.

But Arthur had found the original carbon copy.

Mave held it toward the light.

One name appeared beneath the correction.

EVAN CROSS.

Her stomach dropped.

Declan's most trusted man.

The one who had helped them all night.

The one who had supposedly found the missing camera feeds.

Mave grabbed her phone.

She called Declan.

No answer.

Again.

Nothing.

She called Eleanor.

No answer.

Then a message arrived from Declan's number.

COME ALONE.

An address followed.

Mave stared.

Arthur looked over her shoulder.

"You're not going."

"Of course not."

Arthur relaxed.

Mave picked up her coat.

"I'm going to find out why someone has Declan's phone."

"Mave!"

She stopped at the door.

Her phone vibrated again.

A photograph.

Declan was sitting in a chair.

Brutus beside him.

Evan stood behind them.

Then another message.

BRING CLAIRE'S REPORT.

Mave looked down at the document in her hand.

The front door of the Copper Anchor opened by itself.

Cold air moved through the empty restaurant.

Someone stood outside.

A woman in a dark coat.

The same woman from the security footage.

May you like

She removed her baseball cap.

And said, "If you want Declan alive, don't give Evan that report."
