Chapter 11 - The Final Debt

Salvatore had disappeared from federal protection.

Marco wanted Maeve because she now legally controlled the trust.

Forty million dollars.

But money wasn't his only goal.

He wanted the public confession erased.

He wanted Kathleen's files discredited.

And he wanted Dante broken.

Maeve watched the video twice.

"There's a clock."

Nico zoomed in.

An old railway clock hung behind Salvatore.

Luca recognized it.

Falcone Freight Terminal.

Abandoned twelve years earlier.

Police prepared a raid.

Dante planned something else.

Maeve caught him loading a weapon.

"No."

"Stay here."

"Absolutely not."

"This isn't breakfast."

"No, it's your father."

Dante looked away.

Maeve understood.

Despite fifteen years of anger, Dante wanted Salvatore alive.

She touched his arm.

"Then don't become Marco to save him."

Dante stared at her.

Those words landed.

They coordinated with federal agents.

No private revenge.

No execution.

Evidence.

Arrest.

An ending that couldn't produce another generation of blood.

At the terminal, Marco expected Maeve.

She arrived carrying transfer documents.

Dante remained hidden with tactical teams.

Marco brought Salvatore forward.

"You look like your father," he told Maeve.

"You murdered him."

"He chose the wrong side."

Maeve felt rage rise.

She kept her voice calm.

"You killed him because you were afraid."

Marco's expression tightened.

Good.

She needed him talking.

A recorder beneath her blouse transmitted everything.

Marco confessed more than expected.

Moretti.

The warehouse.

Kathleen.

Hale.

Then he demanded Maeve sign.

She lifted the pen.

"Release Salvatore."

"Sign first."

"No."

Marco raised his gun.

Maeve's hand trembled.

Then Salvatore lunged.

The gun fired.

Agents stormed the terminal.

Dante reached Marco first.

He knocked the weapon away.

Marco fell.

Dante stood over him.

For one terrible second, Maeve saw the temptation.

Kill him.

End it.

Instead Dante stepped backward.

"Arrest him."

Marco's expression shattered.

Being denied the dramatic death he expected seemed almost worse.

Federal agents handcuffed him.

Maeve rushed to Salvatore.

The bullet had struck his leg.

He would survive.

Outside, dawn was breaking.

Dante found Maeve near the ambulances.

"It's over."

"Is it?"

"Marco is finished."

"Hale?"

"Cooperating."

"The money?"

"Frozen until court proceedings finish."

Maeve nodded.

Then Dante took her hand.

"I was trying to tell you something before the alarm."

Maeve's heart accelerated.

"What?"

He opened his mouth.

A federal agent interrupted.

"Miss O'Connell?"

Maeve sighed.

"Of course."

The agent held an evidence bag.

Inside was a letter.

"Marco had this in his coat. It's addressed to you."

Maeve recognized the handwriting.

May you like

Her father's.

And the first line contained Dante's name.
