Chapter 2 – My Wife Wasn't Leaving Me... She Was Trying to Save My Life

ok

My Wife Asked for a Divorce on Our Anniversary Cruise... Then I Found the Boarding Pass in Her PurseChapter 2 – My Wife Wasn't Leaving Me... She Was Trying to Save My LifeThe second boarding pass had my name on it.

I stood frozen.

Sarah still gripped my arm.

Outside, the knocking came again.

Slower this time.

More deliberate.

"Mrs. Turner..."

"We know you're inside."

"Open the door."

Sarah leaned close enough that I could hear her heartbeat.

"Listen to me carefully."

"You have exactly thirty seconds."

"Hide the ticket."

"What?"

"Now, Michael!"

Without thinking, I slipped the boarding pass into the inside pocket of my jacket.

Sarah nodded.

"Good."

She quickly took the first ticket—the one with Jonathan Reed's name—and tucked it back into her purse.

Then she unlocked the cabin door.

Two men wearing dark security uniforms stepped inside.

Neither smiled.

The taller one flashed an identification badge so quickly I barely read it.

"Cruise Security."

"I'm Officer Grant."

His eyes immediately landed on me.

"Mr. Turner."

"I'm sorry to disturb your evening."

"It's regarding a passenger manifest issue."

Sarah crossed her arms.

"We already spoke with Guest Services this afternoon."

Grant smiled politely.

"I'm aware."

"We simply need to confirm something."

He looked directly at me.

"Have you seen a boarding pass belonging to Jonathan Reed?"

My stomach tightened.

Sarah answered before I could.

"No."

Grant watched her for several seconds.

Long enough to make the silence uncomfortable.

Finally...

He nodded.

"If you happen to find one..."

"Please notify security immediately."

"It's considered company property."

He handed Sarah a business card.

Then both men left.

The door quietly closed.

Neither of us moved.

Not until we heard their footsteps disappear down the hallway.

Sarah immediately locked the door again.

"This is worse than I thought."

I stared at her.

"No."

"What's worse is my wife asking for a divorce..."

"...then acting like we're hiding from spies."

She closed her eyes.

"I know."

"Then tell me the truth."

For nearly a minute...

She said nothing.

Finally...

She whispered,

"Three weeks ago..."

"I received an envelope."

"From who?"

"There was no return address."

"What was inside?"

"A photograph."

She reached into her purse.

Pulled out a folded picture.

And handed it to me.

It showed me leaving school after work.

Someone had taken it from across the street.

On the back...

Only one sentence had been written.

People you love can disappear.

A chill ran through my entire body.

"There were more."

Sarah removed several additional photographs.

Me buying groceries.

Walking our dog.

Visiting my elderly sister.

Each one had the same message.

Always typed.

Never handwritten.

No fingerprints.

No clues.

"Why didn't you tell me?"

"Because I thought it would stop."

"It didn't."

She shook her head.

"Then another envelope came."

Inside...

Was the boarding pass.

Jonathan Reed.

Passenger status...

Deceased.

Along with another message.

Take the anniversary cruise.

Come alone.

Or your husband dies.

I felt sick.

"You should've gone to the police."

"I did."

"They found nothing."

The next morning...

I couldn't pretend everything was normal.

Every passenger suddenly looked suspicious.

Every crew member seemed to be watching someone.

Sarah barely touched breakfast.

She kept scanning the dining room.

As if expecting someone to appear.

Then...

A woman carrying a coffee tray accidentally bumped into our table.

"I'm so sorry."

She bent down to collect the spilled napkins.

As she stood...

She quietly slipped something beneath my plate.

Then walked away without looking back.

Sarah saw it too.

Wait until she disappeared.

Only then did she unfold the tiny note.

Three words.

Deck Nine. Noon.

No signature.

At exactly noon...

I went alone.

Sarah insisted someone might be watching us.

Deck Nine was nearly empty.

Only a handful of passengers watched the ocean.

Near the stern stood the same woman from breakfast.

She wore sunglasses and a baseball cap.

When I approached...

She spoke without turning around.

"My name is Rachel Hayes."

"I'm a retired FBI investigator."

I laughed bitterly.

"Sure you are."

She quietly opened her wallet.

Inside was an old federal credential.

Retired.

Legitimate.

"I've been following Jonathan Reed for almost four years."

"I thought he was dead."

"So did everyone else."

She looked directly at me.

"That's exactly why he's dangerous."

Rachel explained everything she knew.

Jonathan Reed had once worked as a forensic accountant.

He uncovered a massive international money-laundering operation involving luxury shipping companies.

Before he could testify...

He disappeared.

Authorities declared him dead.

No body was ever found.

"But..."

Rachel continued,

"Someone has been using his identity ever since."

"Why?"

"Because a dead man's identity is almost impossible to question."

She looked toward Sarah, who stood several decks above pretending not to know us.

"Your wife didn't come on this cruise for an anniversary."

"She came because someone believes Jonathan Reed is on this ship."

Before I could ask another question...

A young woman rushed toward us.

She couldn't have been older than twenty-six.

Terrified.

Out of breath.

She grabbed Rachel's arm.

"They found me."

Rachel's expression changed instantly.

"Emma?"

"We have to leave."

Emma looked at me.

"You're Michael?"

"Yes."

Tears filled her eyes.

"I'm sorry."

"I never wanted you involved."

"What are you talking about?"

She reached into her backpack.

Pulled out a small encrypted flash drive.

Pressed it into my hand.

"If anything happens to me..."

"Don't trust ship security."

"What is this?"

"The truth."

Then she whispered something that made my blood run cold.

"My father..."

"...was Jonathan Reed."

Suddenly...

A loud alarm echoed across the deck.

Passengers screamed.

Crew members began shouting emergency instructions.

Rachel looked toward the upper deck.

Two security officers were running directly toward us.

The same two men who had visited our cabin.

Grant pointed straight at me.

"There he is!"

Rachel grabbed my shoulder.

"Run!"

Emma turned in the opposite direction.

"No!"

Rachel shouted.

But it was too late.

Three more men appeared from the stairwell.

Emma disappeared into the crowd.

Within seconds...

She was gone.

Rachel looked at the flash drive still clutched in my hand.

Then at the approaching officers.

Her voice became urgent.

"Michael..."

"Whatever happens..."

"Do not let them take that drive."

"They're not cruise security."

"They've been hunting Jonathan Reed for three years."

I stared at the men chasing us.

"If they're not security..."

"Who are they?"

Rachel answered without slowing down.

"The people who made Jonathan Reed disappear."

Behind us...

Officer Grant reached for the radio on his shoulder.

His next words echoed across the deck.

"Target confirmed."

May you like

"Both Turners are alive."

"Begin Phase Two."
