Chapter 8 - Kent’s Secret Account

The lights came back on.

My mother stared past me as if she had seen a ghost.

“Adrian Mercer.”

The man standing inside the warehouse doorway smiled.

“Hello, Elizabeth.”

Nobody moved.

He looked close to seventy, silver-haired and lean, dressed in a charcoal overcoat that probably cost more than my first car. He carried no visible weapon.

He didn't need one.

Four men stood behind him.

Roman's voice was gone from my earpiece because I had dropped it.

Police were supposed to be less than two minutes away.

Yet Adrian Mercer looked completely relaxed.

I remembered the coded words from my father's pages.

North.

Harbor.

Seven.

Mercer.

Trust.

Mercer.

Not a street.

A name.

“You knew my father,” I said.

Adrian's eyes moved to me.

For a moment, something almost tender crossed his face.

“You have Daniel's eyes.”

My stomach turned.

“Don't talk about him.”

“Why?”

“Because he died trying to expose you.”

My mother stepped in front of me.

“Claire, stay back.”

Adrian smiled.

“Still protecting her, Elizabeth?”

“You stay away from my daughter.”

“For seventeen years, I did.”

The words landed strangely.

I looked at my mother.

She wouldn't meet my eyes.

“What does that mean?”

“Nothing,” she said.

Adrian laughed softly.

“She still lies beautifully.”

Vanessa moved away from him.

Interesting.

She wasn't comfortable with him either.

Margaret Ashby stood beside the chair she'd supposedly been tied to.

Her face had gone pale.

Adrian noticed her.

“Margaret.”

She said nothing.

“Charles would be disappointed.”

“My husband has been dead twelve years.”

“Yes.”

Adrian tilted his head.

“He was disappointing even before that.”

Margaret's mouth tightened.

I stepped around my mother.

“You ordered my father killed.”

Adrian looked genuinely amused.

“Did I?”

“His letter had your name.”

“His letter had Elizabeth's name too.”

I froze.

My mother closed her eyes.

Adrian continued.

“Daniel suspected many people.”

“You were the face cut from the photograph.”

“Was I?”

“Stop answering questions with questions.”

His smile widened.

“You really are Daniel's daughter.”

I hated that he knew enough about my father to make comparisons.

“What is Harrow?”

“A consulting organization.”

Vanessa laughed.

Adrian looked at her.

The sound died instantly.

I understood then.

Vanessa wasn't running this.

She had never been running this.

“What does Harrow really do?”

Adrian removed his gloves.

“It solves complicated problems for people who prefer privacy.”

“Money laundering.”

“Sometimes.”

“Blackmail.”

“Occasionally.”

“Murder?”

My mother whispered, “Claire.”

I ignored her.

Adrian looked at me.

“Words like murder are emotionally satisfying. They are rarely financially precise.”

“So that's a yes.”

His expression didn't change.

A pounding sounded against the front entrance.

“Police!” someone shouted.

Adrian checked his watch.

No fear.

No surprise.

He had expected them.

Roman's voice thundered from outside.

“Claire!”

One of Adrian's men moved toward the door.

Adrian raised a hand.

“No.”

The man stopped.

Adrian looked at me.

“You invited Roman Vale.”

“I didn't need to.”

“No. I suppose not.”

The pounding came again.

Vanessa looked nervous now.

“We need to go.”

Adrian glanced at her.

“You can.”

Her face changed.

“You said—”

“I said Claire would come.”

“What about me?”

“You have served your purpose.”

Vanessa stared at him.

I almost felt sorry for her.

Almost.

“What purpose?” I asked.

Adrian's eyes returned to me.

“Getting Kent to move the money.”

My heartbeat quickened.

“The eight million.”

“Yes.”

“Why?”

“To wake an account that had been dormant for seventeen years.”

“The account in my name.”

“Precisely.”

“I never opened it.”

“No.”

“Then who did?”

Adrian looked toward my mother.

I turned.

“Mom?”

She shook her head.

“Not me.”

“Then who?”

“Daniel.”

That silenced everyone.

“My father opened an account in my name?”

“When you were sixteen.”

“Why?”

“To hide something.”

“The ledger?”

“No.”

“What?”

My mother looked at Adrian.

He smiled.

“Tell her.”

She refused.

Adrian did it for her.

“Evidence.”

“What kind?”

“The kind that could destroy Harrow.”

“Then why didn't you destroy the account?”

“We couldn't access it.”

“Because it was mine?”

“Because Daniel was clever.”

Adrian walked slowly toward the table.

“He created a trust using your identity, but access required a chain of conditions.”

“What conditions?”

“Funds had to move through specific accounts.”

“Kent's.”

“One of them.”

My stomach tightened.

“And Kent knew?”

Adrian smiled.

“Ask him.”

A crash sounded at the warehouse entrance.

The door opened.

Roman entered first.

Two police officers came behind him.

His eyes found me immediately.

Then Adrian.

Roman stopped.

Something ancient and ugly passed between them.

“Mercer.”

“Roman.”

“You should have stayed dead.”

Adrian laughed softly.

“I heard the same about Elizabeth.”

Roman moved beside me.

“Are you hurt?”

“No.”

He looked at my mother.

Recognition flickered.

“Elizabeth Bennett.”

My mother nodded.

“Roman.”

“You let your daughter bury you.”

Pain crossed her face.

“This isn't the time.”

“It will be.”

Adrian watched us.

“What a touching reunion.”

Roman ignored him.

“Claire, come with me.”

Adrian said, “She won't.”

Roman turned.

“Wasn't speaking to you.”

One of the officers stepped forward.

“Everyone stay where you are.”

Adrian calmly held out his hands.

“Of course.”

No resistance.

That bothered me.

A man who supposedly controlled a criminal network had just allowed police to walk directly toward him.

Roman noticed too.

“Where are your lawyers?” he asked.

Adrian smiled.

“Probably billing me.”

Vanessa started toward the side door.

An officer stopped her.

“Ma'am.”

“I haven't done anything.”

Margaret laughed bitterly.

“You impersonated my kidnapper.”

Vanessa glared at her.

“You agreed.”

“I agreed to meet you.”

“You sat in the chair.”

“Because you said Claire needed to believe she was in danger.”

Kent's mother turned toward me.

“I am sorry.”

I didn't know what to do with that.

There were too many betrayals to process.

Roman leaned closer.

“We need to leave.”

“Not yet.”

“Claire.”

“I need to know about Kent's account.”

Roman looked at Adrian.

“Later.”

“No.”

My voice sharpened.

“Everyone has been deciding what I should know for seventeen years.”

Roman went silent.

I looked at Adrian.

“Why did Kent transfer eight million dollars?”

“Because Vanessa told him to.”

I turned toward her.

Vanessa's face hardened.

“I told him the payments would protect you.”

“From whom?”

“Harrow.”

“You are Harrow.”

“No.”

Her voice cracked.

“I worked for them.”

“Past tense?”

She looked at Adrian.

“Yes.”

He smiled.

She looked afraid.

For the first time, I believed her.

“What did you tell Kent?”

“That Charles's records could be erased if he funded a settlement account.”

“Why eight million?”

“It wasn't about the amount.”

Adrian answered.

“It was about the route.”

I understood.

“The money traveled through accounts from my father's ledger.”

“Very good.”

“And ended in mine.”

“Yes.”

“What did that activate?”

Adrian looked at me.

“Ask your husband.”

“I am asking you.”

“He knows more.”

Roman's jaw tightened.

“Where is Kent?”

My stomach dropped.

He had been outside.

Roman turned to one of his men.

The man touched his earpiece.

Then frowned.

“Mr. Ashby isn't at the vehicle.”

“What?”

“He was there five minutes ago.”

Roman's expression hardened.

“Find him.”

The man moved immediately.

I pulled out my phone.

Kent had called three times.

I hadn't heard it.

There was one voicemail.

I pressed play.

“Claire.”

Kent sounded breathless.

“I'm sorry. I should have told you this years ago.”

I looked at Roman.

The voicemail continued.

“The transfers weren't for Vanessa. Not really. I knew where the money would end.”

My stomach tightened.

“I found your father's routing instructions three years ago. That's what was inside the anniversary envelope before I replaced it with the separation papers.”

I closed my eyes.

Another lie.

“I thought if I completed the transfer, I could find whatever Daniel hid before Harrow did.”

Roman whispered, “Idiot.”

Kent continued.

“I didn't know the final account was in your name until three days ago.”

A pause.

Then:

“When I saw it, I realized your father had designed the whole thing around you.”

The recording crackled.

“Claire, the eight million isn't gone.”

Vanessa stared at my phone.

Adrian's smile disappeared.

That was the first time I saw him lose control.

“The transfer reversed automatically.”

Adrian stepped toward me.

Roman immediately moved between us.

Kent continued.

“The money was only a key.”

Adrian said, “Turn that off.”

Roman smiled coldly.

“Now I'm interested.”

Kent's voice continued.

“The transfer activated a digital escrow created from Daniel's original instructions. I found the access portal.”

My heartbeat hammered.

“He left a message inside.”

My eyes filled.

My father.

A message.

Seventeen years old.

Kent's voice dropped.

“But I couldn't open it.”

A pause.

“It requires two identities.”

I held my breath.

“Yours.”

Another pause.

“And mine.”

The voicemail ended.

I stared at the phone.

“Why Kent?”

My mother looked shaken.

“I don't know.”

Margaret did.

I saw it immediately.

Kent's mother slowly sat down.

“Margaret?”

She covered her mouth.

“What do you know?”

“Charles.”

“What about him?”

“He made Kent sign something when he was eighteen.”

Roman turned toward her.

“What?”

“A trust agreement.”

Kent would have been eighteen in 2008.

Before my father's death.

Before Kent and I met.

“What trust?”

Margaret shook her head.

“I never saw all of it.”

“Why would Dad need Kent's identity?”

My mother whispered, “Because Daniel knew Charles's son wasn't responsible for Charles's crimes.”

The sentence from the letter.

Do not punish him for what Charles did.

I stared at her.

“Dad chose Kent?”

“He chose an Ashby heir.”

Margaret nodded slowly.

“Charles couldn't access anything without Kent.”

Roman understood.

“Daniel created a dead man's switch using both families.”

Adrian's face had become expressionless.

I looked at him.

“You've been trying to bring an Ashby and a Bennett together.”

“For years.”

“And Kent marrying me did it for you.”

“No.”

Adrian's answer surprised me.

“Your marriage complicated everything.”

“Why?”

“Because Daniel never anticipated that his daughter would marry Charles's son.”

“Then what did you expect?”

“That eventually we would force the two heirs into the same room.”

Roman laughed without humor.

“Instead they fell in love.”

Adrian looked at me.

“Yes.”

Something about the way he said love hurt.

Kent had loved me.

Maybe still did.

And betrayed me anyway.

My phone vibrated.

A text from Kent.

I FOUND THE PORTAL.

A second message.

DON'T TELL MERCER.

Too late.

A third arrived.

THE ACCESS FILE IS AT HOME.

My stomach tightened.

The house.

Someone had already searched it.

Roman read the message.

“We go now.”

Adrian smiled.

“Do you think I'll allow that?”

The police officer stepped between them.

“You aren't allowing anything.”

Adrian looked at him.

Then smiled.

“Of course.”

Again.

Too easy.

Roman saw it.

“Claire.”

His voice changed.

Urgent.

“We leave.”

I followed him.

My mother came too.

Margaret stayed with the officers.

Vanessa was being questioned.

Evelyn had disappeared.

I stopped.

“Where's Evelyn?”

Roman looked around.

She was gone.

Nobody had noticed her leave.

Outside, Kent wasn't there.

His car remained parked.

Driver's door open.

Roman's man approached.

“We found his phone.”

He handed it to Roman.

Cracked screen.

No Kent.

My stomach dropped.

“Someone took him.”

“Maybe.”

Roman examined the pavement.

“No blood.”

My phone rang.

Kent.

I answered instantly.

“Kent?”

Silence.

Then a computerized voice.

“Authentication required.”

“What?”

“Claire Bennett Ashby identified.”

Roman stared at me.

The voice continued.

“Second identity required.”

Then Kent came on.

Weak.

Breathing hard.

“Claire.”

“Kent, where are you?”

“Don't come looking.”

“What happened?”

“They need me alive.”

“Who?”

A sound.

Someone struck him.

“Kent!”

His breathing became ragged.

Then he whispered:

“The file at home. My office. Behind the photograph of us.”

The call disconnected.

Roman was already moving toward the SUV.

My mother grabbed my hand.

“Claire, don't go back there.”

“Why?”

She stared at me.

“Because Daniel didn't create only one dead man's switch.”

My skin prickled.

“What does that mean?”

She looked terrified.

“The second one was designed to activate if Harrow ever found you.”

Roman stopped.

“What happens when it activates?”

My mother opened her mouth.

Before she could answer, my phone displayed a notification.

DANIEL BENNETT ESCROW: ACCESS GRANTED.

A file downloaded automatically.

One video.

Seventeen years old.

My father's face appeared on the thumbnail.

I pressed play.

He looked directly into the camera.

Older than I remembered.

Terrified.

“Claire, if you're watching this, then Charles Ashby's son has found you.”

I stopped breathing.

My father leaned closer to the camera.

“And if Kent Ashby became your husband, there is something you need to know before you trust him with the second ledger.”

The video froze.

A password box appeared.

Then one hint.

THE DATE YOUR HUSBAND FIRST LIED TO YOU.

My mother stared at the screen.

May you like

Roman looked at me.

And suddenly I knew exactly which date my father meant.
