CHAPTER 2 – PART 1

The sound came again.
A zipper.
Slow.
Deliberate.
Someone was definitely upstairs.
Daniel didn't hesitate.
He sprinted toward the staircase.
"Stay here!"
I ignored him.
I ran after him.
By the time we reached the second floor...
our bedroom door was wide open.
The curtains danced in the ocean breeze.
The balcony door...
was open.
The room looked untouched.
Except for one thing.
My navy-blue suitcase sat neatly on the bed.
Completely packed.
I hadn't packed it.
Daniel hadn't packed it.
Yet every drawer had been opened.
My favorite dresses were folded inside.
My passport.
My jewelry.
Even the necklace my late father gave me.
Everything was there.
Perfectly organized.
Like someone knew exactly what I would take if I left forever.
I slowly turned toward Daniel.
His face had gone completely pale.
He whispered one word.
"No..."
I had never heard fear in his voice before.
Real fear.
The kind that freezes a person's soul.
"What is happening?"
He didn't answer.
Instead...
he walked straight to the suitcase.
His hands trembled as he unzipped it.
At first...
everything looked normal.
Clothes.
Shoes.
Toiletries.
Then...
he reached beneath the folded sweaters.
His breathing stopped.
Very carefully...
he lifted out a second passport.
I frowned.
"That's not mine."
He nodded.
"I know."
Another passport.
Different name.
Different photograph.
Same size.
Same color.
Same country.
Then came another.
And another.
Five passports.
Every one of them belonged to someone I had never seen.
Mixed between them were airline tickets.
None of them had my name.
Cash.
Several stacks of hundred-dollar bills.
A prepaid cell phone.
Still sealed in plastic.
"What is this?"
Daniel didn't answer immediately.
Instead...
he walked to the window.
Looked toward the street.
The black SUV had returned.
Parked across from our mailbox.
Engine running.
Waiting.
Daniel closed every curtain in the room.
Locked the bedroom door.
Then looked at me.
"Emily..."
"No matter what happens today..."
"You have to believe me."
That sentence terrified me more than anything else.
"Believe what?"
He swallowed.
"I didn't put those things in your suitcase."
"Then who did?"
"I don't know."
It wasn't the answer I wanted.
But it sounded honest.
Too honest.
A loud knock shook the front door.
Three heavy bangs.
Cooper barked wildly downstairs.
Another knock.
Even louder.
Daniel looked toward the hallway.
"They're early."
My heart skipped.
"They?"
Before he could answer...
his phone rang again.
Unknown Number.
He put it on speaker.
A calm male voice said,
"You should've let her leave."
Then the call ended.
For a second...
neither of us moved.
The house suddenly felt too quiet.
Too still.
Almost as if the walls themselves were listening.
The knocking started again.
This time...
someone shouted,
"Police Department!"
"Open the door!"
I stared at Daniel.
"What did you do?"
His answer came immediately.
"Nothing."
It was the same answer every guilty person gives.
But something inside me whispered...
Maybe this time it was true.
Downstairs...
the front door rattled.
Another officer shouted,
"Sir!"
"Open the door now!"
Daniel looked at the suitcase.
Then at me.
Then back at the window.
The SUV slowly pulled away.
As if whoever had been watching...
already knew what would happen next.
Daniel suddenly grabbed the suitcase.
"We're leaving."
"What?"
"Right now."
"Daniel, the police are outside!"
"I know."
He took my hand.
For the first time in twelve years...
I felt him shaking.
Not angry.
Terrified.
The officers began walking around the side of the house.
We could hear radios.
Footsteps.
More patrol cars arriving.
Someone had called in backup.
For what?
We still didn't know.
Daniel looked directly into my eyes.
"Emily."
"I need you to trust me."
"Just this once."
I wanted to.
God...
I wanted to.
But then I looked at my reflection in the bedroom mirror.
The bruise beneath my eye.
I'd forgotten about it.
It happened the night before.
I had slipped on the wet deck after a summer storm.
Daniel had spent twenty minutes trying to stop the swelling with ice.
But no one outside knew that.
To them...
it would look like something very different.
The front door burst open downstairs.
"Police!"
"Don't move!"
Heavy boots thundered across the hardwood floor.
Daniel whispered,
"We're out of time."
He grabbed the suitcase.
I instinctively reached for it.
Our hands collided.
The suitcase slipped.
Fell onto the bedroom floor.
Burst open.
Passports scattered everywhere.
Cash flew through the room.
One airline ticket drifted beneath the bed.
We both froze.
Neither of us had ever seen any of it before.
The bedroom door exploded inward.
Three officers rushed inside.
Every gun pointed at Daniel.
"Step away from the suitcase!"
"Hands where I can see them!"
I screamed.
"He didn't—"
Daniel cut me off.
"No."
He slowly raised his hands.
One officer noticed my bruise.
His expression hardened instantly.
He looked at the scattered passports.
The cash.
The fake identities.
The frightened woman.
The terrified husband.
From his point of view...
the story already made perfect sense.
"Sir..."
the lead officer said coldly,
"Turn around."
Daniel obeyed.
Metal handcuffs clicked around his wrists.
I watched in disbelief.
He never resisted.
Never argued.
Never even looked angry.
He looked...
defeated.
As they escorted him downstairs...
he turned toward me one last time.
Not toward the officers.
Not toward the evidence.
Toward me.
His voice cracked.
"Emily..."
"Whatever happens..."
"Don't take that suitcase."
The officers pushed him outside.
The neighbors were already gathering.
Phones were already recording.
Someone whispered,
"I always knew there was something wrong with him."
Another answered,
"I heard them fighting last night."
We hadn't fought.
But rumors never wait for facts.
An officer gently placed a blanket over my shoulders.
"Ma'am..."
"We'll need you to come with us."
I looked at the suitcase sitting in the hallway.
For the first time...
I noticed something I hadn't seen before.
Tucked inside the half-open lining...
was a tiny white envelope.
No stamp.
No name.
Just four words written in black ink.
"Don't trust the police."
My heartbeat stopped.
I slowly looked up.
Across the street...
the black SUV was back.
Parked exactly where it had been all morning.
Someone inside...
was watching me.
And just as I took one step toward the envelope...
May you like
the driver opened the door...
and stepped out.
