The Man Behind the Mask

Chapter 5: The Man Behind the Mask

The room fell silent.

Even the steady beeping of Caroline's heart monitor seemed distant.

Five million dollars.

Eric had taken out a life insurance policy on me.

My hands instinctively tightened around my newborn daughter.

Richard slowly lowered his phone.

"The investigators haven't confirmed whether the policy was fully activated," he said carefully. "But the application exists. It lists Eric as the primary beneficiary."

Monica didn't say a word.

She was already opening her laptop.

Her fingers moved rapidly across the keyboard.

"What are you looking for?" I asked.

"Every insurance company Eric ever worked with."

Susan frowned.

"You think there could be more?"

"I think," Monica answered without looking up, "we've spent months assuming Eric wanted custody."

She finally looked at me.

"What if custody was only step one?"

A chill crawled through my body.

Richard nodded grimly.

"If Lydia disappeared..."

"Eric becomes the grieving widower," Monica finished.

"He inherits the insurance."

"He keeps the hidden assets."

"He gains sympathy."

"And eventually..." Richard said quietly, "...he petitions for sole custody."

The pieces finally fit together.

The financial fraud.

The cameras.

The forged documents.

The fake abuse allegations.

The planted medication.

Every part of Eric's plan depended on one thing.

Me disappearing.

Whether that meant prison...

A psychiatric hospital...

Or something far worse...

It no longer mattered.

As long as I wasn't standing between him and our daughter.

Three Hours Earlier

Eric Whitmore sat alone inside his downtown office.

Every light was off except one desk lamp.

His phone wouldn't stop ringing.

Unknown numbers.

Business partners.

His accountant.

Three reporters.

He ignored them all.

Instead, he opened his laptop.

Password denied.

Again.

Denied.

He slammed the desk.

"Damn it."

His company email had already been frozen.

His business accounts were inaccessible.

His personal banking app displayed the same message every time.

ACCOUNT TEMPORARILY RESTRICTED UNDER COURT ORDER.

He stood and walked toward the window overlooking the city.

Everything had collapsed in less than six hours.

Impossible.

He had spent two years preparing.

Two years moving money.

Two years creating shell companies.

Two years building evidence against Lydia.

Then Brooke ruined everything.

His phone vibrated again.

This time it wasn't a call.

It was a text.

DANIEL HAS BEEN ARRESTED.

Eric's stomach dropped.

A second message arrived.

THEY HAVE THE SERVER.

His breathing became shallow.

No.

That wasn't supposed to happen.

Daniel was supposed to destroy everything before leaving the country.

He reached into his jacket and removed another phone.

One that nobody knew existed.

He dialed from memory.

A woman answered.

"Hello?"

"It's me."

Silence.

Then—

"You shouldn't be calling."

"I need your help."

"No."

"They found Daniel."

Another silence.

Finally...

"What do you want?"

"The storage key."

"I burned it."

"You what?"

"You told me if anything happened, destroy everything."

Eric closed his eyes.

"You weren't supposed to actually do it."

"You always said never trust anyone."

"I trusted you."

The woman laughed bitterly.

"No, Eric."

"You used me."

The line went dead.

Back inside the hospital...

Richard looked at Monica.

"The investigators found something else."

She closed her laptop.

"What?"

"The server recorded automatic backups."

"Backups?"

Richard nodded.

"Every camera uploaded footage every twelve hours."

"So even if the hard drives were destroyed..."

"They still have copies."

I looked at him.

"How much?"

"Almost everything."

Susan let out a slow breath.

"Good."

Richard wasn't smiling.

"They also found recordings from places that weren't your house."

"What places?"

"The office."

"The Miami condo."

"Eric's mother's home."

"And..."

He hesitated.

"My father's grave."

The room froze.

I stared at him.

"My father's..."

"Yes."

I couldn't understand.

"Why would he put a camera there?"

Richard opened another message.

"The investigators don't know yet."

The next morning...

National news had the story.

Not all of it.

Just enough.

LOCAL BUSINESSMAN ACCUSED OF HIDING MARITAL ASSETS DURING DIVORCE.

COURT FREEZES MILLIONS IN SUSPECTED FRAUD.

MISTRESS DETAINED AFTER COURTROOM ASSAULT.

The phones inside the hospital never stopped ringing.

Reporters waited outside.

Hospital security doubled.

No visitors.

No interviews.

No photographs.

Around nine o'clock, Detective Elena Ramirez arrived.

She introduced herself quietly.

"I'm handling the criminal investigation."

She pulled a chair beside my bed.

"I know you've had a difficult twenty-four hours."

I smiled weakly.

"That's one way to describe it."

She opened a folder.

"We recovered approximately twenty-eight terabytes of video."

Susan blinked.

"How much is that?"

"Almost two years of recordings."

Monica looked impressed.

"That's an enormous amount."

"It is."

The detective continued.

"We also recovered deleted emails."

Richard leaned forward.

"Anything significant?"

She nodded once.

"Very."

She handed Monica a printed page.

Monica's expression immediately changed.

"Oh my God."

"What?" I asked.

She looked at me carefully.

"I think we've just found Eric's original plan."

My heartbeat accelerated.

The detective spoke.

"The emails were exchanged between Eric and Daniel."

"When?"

"Eighteen months ago."

"Before Brooke?"

"Yes."

She slid the paper across the bed.

One sentence had been highlighted.

If the divorce becomes unavoidable, we proceed with Option C.

I frowned.

"What's Option C?"

The detective turned another page.

There it was.

A document.

Typed.

Organized.

Professional.

At the top...

PROJECT CAROLINE

My blood ran cold.

Caroline.

Our daughter's name.

Below it...

Three phases.

Phase One
Financial Isolation.

Phase Two
Psychological Documentation.

Phase Three
Emergency Custody Acquisition.

Susan whispered,

"My God..."

Monica continued reading.

Each section described my life.

Almost like a business proposal.

Reduce available cash.

Encourage emotional distress.

Capture outbursts.

Create dependency.

Document instability.

Challenge competency.

Secure temporary custody.

Then...

Near the bottom...

One sentence stopped everyone.

If subject becomes non-compliant, transition to Contingency Plan.

Richard looked at the detective.

"What's the contingency?"

She slowly removed another page.

"We haven't finished decrypting it."

"But we recovered the title."

She placed it on the bed.

Large black letters.

CONTINGENCY RED.

Nobody spoke.

The detective finally did.

"We believe it was password protected."

Monica asked,

"Have you cracked it?"

"Not yet."

Richard rubbed his forehead.

"What if it's exactly what we're afraid of?"

The detective answered honestly.

"It might be."

At that exact moment...

Across town...

Eric walked into his mother's house.

Elaine Whitmore looked up from the kitchen table.

She had already seen the news.

"You lied to me."

Eric closed the door.

"I need your help."

She stood.

"No."

"They're trying to destroy me."

"You destroyed yourself."

"They manipulated Brooke."

Elaine shook her head.

"They didn't make her slap your wife."

Eric's patience disappeared.

"They've frozen everything."

"So?"

"I need somewhere to stay."

"No."

He stared.

"What?"

Elaine walked toward the hallway.

"I spent months believing Lydia stole from you."

"I didn't lie."

She opened a kitchen drawer.

Inside was a folded letter.

"I found this yesterday."

She handed it to him.

It was from Lydia.

Written months earlier.

The letter Eric claimed never existed.

It explained every missing dollar.

Every medical bill.

Every bank transfer Lydia questioned.

Elaine looked at her son.

"I asked you if this was real."

"You said she forged it."

Eric didn't answer.

Tears filled Elaine's eyes.

"I defended you."

She pointed toward the door.

"Leave."

"Mom—"

"Leave."

He reached for her arm.

She stepped backward.

"For the first time in your life..."

"...you are going to face the consequences without me."

She locked the door behind him.

Eric stood alone on the porch.

Homeless.

His bank accounts frozen.

His business collapsing.

His mother had just chosen Lydia.

Back at the hospital...

Detective Ramirez's phone rang.

She answered immediately.

"Ramirez."

She listened.

Her expression hardened.

"What happened?"

Silence.

Then—

"When?"

Another pause.

"I'll be there."

She hung up.

Richard stood.

"What is it?"

She looked directly at me.

"We found another storage unit."

"Eric's?"

"Yes."

"What was inside?"

She took a slow breath.

"There wasn't any money."

"There weren't any documents."

"There weren't any cameras."

She looked down at Caroline sleeping peacefully in my arms.

"There was a nursery."

The room went completely silent.

"A fully furnished nursery," she continued.

"Every wall painted."

"A crib."

"Clothes."

"Formula."

"Toys."

Susan frowned.

"But..."

"He already had a nursery at home."

The detective nodded.

"That's why we're concerned."

She opened a photograph.

None of us were prepared.

The nursery looked identical...

To mine.

Same wallpaper.

Same curtains.

Same rocking chair.

Even the mobile above the crib.

Everything.

Except one thing.

There wasn't a single photograph of me.

Only Eric.

Holding a baby that hadn't even been born yet.

And underneath one framed picture...

Investigators found a handwritten note.

It read:

"Welcome Home, Caroline."

Only...

My name wasn't written anywhere.

It was as if...

Eric had already planned a future...

May you like

Where I never existed anymore.
