Chapter 2 - The Truth in the Basement

Nora dropped the birth certificate onto the dusty carpet.
Her mind recoiled from the horror of Mark’s words.
"That's a lie," Nora whispered, backing away.
"My father was a good man!"
"He died before Sarah vanished!"
Mark took a step closer, holding his hands open.
"Your father wasn't who you thought he was, Nora."
"He controlled everything in this family."
"Including Sarah."
Leo shrank behind Nora’s coat, trembling with fear.
Nora looked down at the boy's hazel eyes.
The hazel eyes she thought he inherited from her father.
Now those eyes looked like a terrifying nightmare.
"Why did you bring Leo to the hospital today, Mark?" Nora demanded.
"I didn't bring him," Mark said softly.
"He was brought there by Sarah's old attorney."
"The attorney sent me a letter this morning."
Mark reached into his coat and pulled out a black USB drive.
"He said Sarah left a recording before she disappeared."
"He said the truth would be revealed today no matter what."
Nora’s hands trembled as she grabbed the USB drive from Mark.
"Is my sister alive?" Nora asked, her voice cracking.
"I don't know," Mark replied truthfully.
"I paid that foster family to keep Leo safe from your father's estate executors."
"If the executors found out Leo existed, he would lose his trust fund."
"The trust fund your father created before he died."
Nora stared at Mark in deep suspicion.
"You used my money, Mark!"
"You lied to me for seven years while I grieved a dead baby!"
"Your baby really did die, Nora," Mark said, tears streaming down his face.
"Our daughter was stillborn on October fourteenth."
"Sarah gave birth to Leo in the same hospital room hours later."
"She was terrified your father's lawyers would take him away."
"She begged me to pretend Leo was dead so they would stop hunting her."
"I made a choice to protect a child, Nora."
"But I was too cowardly to tell you the truth."
Nora shook her head in utter devastation.
"You let me believe my baby was gone while you paid another woman to raise my nephew!"
"I hated you every day for not talking about our loss!"
"And all this time, you were hiding my sister's child!"
Mark reached out to touch her shoulder.
"Nora, please."
"Don't touch me," Nora said, her voice dripping with ice.
She grabbed Leo’s hand and turned toward the door.
"Where are you going?" Mark cried out.
"I'm taking Leo to a safe place," Nora declared.
"And then I'm watching this drive."
Nora pushed past Mark and walked out into the pouring rain.
She drove straight to her childhood home in the suburbs.
The house had been empty since her father passed away three years ago.
She carried Leo inside and locked the heavy front door behind them.
She brought Leo upstairs to her old bedroom.
She turned on the television and gave him a glass of warm milk.
"Stay here, sweetie," Nora said gently.
"I'll be downstairs in the study."
Leo nodded, holding a soft stuffed bear she had retrieved from a closet.
Nora walked down the long, silent hallway to her father's study.
The air in the room was heavy with the smell of old leather and tobacco.
She inserted the USB drive into her father's desk laptop.
A single video file appeared on the screen.
Nora clicked play with a trembling finger.
A pale woman with dark circles under her eyes appeared on the screen.
It was Sarah.
She looked thin, fragile, and exhausted.
"Nora, if you're watching this, I'm already gone," Sarah said on the video.
Nora let out a choked sob, pressing her hand to her mouth.
"I have to tell you the truth about Father," Sarah continued on screen.
"He didn't want to protect us, Nora."
"He was bankrupt."
"He spent his entire fortune on failed investments years ago."
"When he found out I was pregnant with my college boyfriend's baby, he saw an opportunity."
Nora gasped in shock.
"He forged a new will," Sarah said, her voice shaking on the recording.
"He used Leo's existence to set up a fraudulent trust."
"He claimed Leo was his direct heir so he could access an old family estate fund."
"He threatened to take Leo away from me forever if I didn't play along."
"Mark found out what Father was doing."
"Mark risked everything to help me escape."
"He helped me hide Leo with a safe foster family."
"He did it to protect you from Father's debts and legal ruin."
Nora stared at the screen as the video went black.
Her heart pounded wildly against her ribs.
Mark hadn't been paying off a secret mistress.
He hadn't been stealing her money for selfish greed.
He had been protecting her from her own father's sinister lies.
He had carried the crushing weight of this secret alone for seven years.
He allowed Nora to hate him rather than destroy her memory of her father.
Nora fell to her knees on the hard hardwood floor.
Tears poured down her face as guilt washed over her like a tidal wave.
She had pushed her husband away for years.
She had called him a monster and a liar.
And he had silently borne the pain just to shield her heart.
Suddenly, the front door downstairs banged open with a loud crash.
Heavy footsteps echoed through the hallway below.
Nora stood up in terror.
"Nora!" a voice called out from the darkness.
It wasn't Mark's voice.
It was the harsh, cold voice of Richard Vance.
Richard Vance was her father's former corporate attorney and estate trustee.
Nora stepped cautiously out into the upper hallway balcony.
Richard Vance stood in the foyer below, holding a thick leather folder.
Two large men in dark suits stood behind him.
"Where is the boy, Nora?" Vance asked calmly, looking up at her.
"Get out of my house, Richard!" Nora demanded, her voice shaking.
"I know everything."
"I watched Sarah's tape."
Vance smiled a cold, dangerous smile.
"Then you know the trust fund is worth twelve million dollars."
"And as the legal trustee, I control every penny once that boy is in my custody."
"Your father was a genius, Nora."
"He left me full authority to manage Leo's estate if Sarah disappeared."
"Give me the child, and I'll make sure you get a generous allowance."
"Refuse, and I'll have you arrested for kidnapping your sister's orphan."
Nora's blood ran cold.
"Orphan?" Nora asked, her heart dropping into her stomach.
"What did you do to Sarah?"
Vance took a step up the carpeted staircase.
"Sarah was reckless, Nora."
"She tried to go to the police seven years ago."
"She's been living in a private facility upstate ever since."
"Declared mentally unfit, thanks to my legal team."
Nora felt like she had been hit by a freight train.
Her sister was alive.
Her sister was trapped in an institution by Vance.
"You monster," Nora spat.
"Hand over the child, Nora," Vance said, stepping higher.
"Or my men will search this house room by room."
Suddenly, the front glass doors shattered behind Vance.
Mark charged through the broken frame, holding a heavy metal tire iron.
He slammed the metal rod against the first security guard's shoulder.
The guard collapsed to the floor with a painful groan.
"Nora, take Leo and run!" Mark roared, charging at the second guard.
Mark tackled the second man into the wooden coat rack.
They smashed into the wall with a deafening crash.
Vance pulled a small black velvet box from his coat.
He pointed a heavy brass key at the basement door near the stairs.
"You're too late, Mark!" Vance yelled.
"The real estate documents are in the basement safe!"
"Once I sign them tonight, the child's custody transfers to me legally!"
Vance sprinted toward the basement door and slipped inside.
He locked the heavy oak door from the inside with a loud click.
Mark pulled himself up from the floor, bleeding from a cut on his forehead.
The second guard scrambled up and ran out into the night, terrified.
Mark ran up the stairs to Nora, gasping for breath.
"Nora, are you okay?" he asked, grabbing her hands.
"Mark, you're bleeding!" she cried, touching his face.
"I'm fine," Mark panted, looking into her eyes.
"Is Leo safe?"
"He's in my old room," Nora whispered, tears brimming in her eyes.
"Mark... I saw the video."
"I know what you did for me."
"I'm so sorry I doubted you."
Mark squeezed her hands tightly.
"We don't have time for that now, honey."
"Vance is in the basement."
"He's destroying the original documents that prove Sarah was coerced."
"If those papers burn, we can never free Sarah."
"And we can never prove Leo belongs with us."
Mark pointed toward the small attic hatch in the ceiling above them.
"There's an old laundry chute that leads straight into the basement pantry."
"It's too small for me, Nora."
"You have to go down there and stop him."
Nora looked at the tiny wooden hatch in the wall.
It was dark, narrow, and suffocatingly small.
She heard the faint sound of paper rustling and a lighter clicking below.
Vance was starting to burn the evidence right now.
Nora looked back at Mark, seeing the fierce, unyielding love in his eyes.
She looked toward her old bedroom where her innocent nephew was hiding.
She grabbed the heavy brass table lamp from the hallway stand.
"Keep Leo safe, Mark," Nora said firmly.
"I'm bringing my sister home."
Nora unlatched the laundry chute door and squeezed herself into the darkness.
She slid down the narrow metal pipe into the pitch-black basement pantry.
She landed heavily on a pile of dusty blankets.
She crept out of the pantry into the dim basement workshop.
Vance stood near the open iron safe, holding a flickering metal lighter.
A pile of legal papers was already smoking on the concrete floor.
Vance reached into the safe to pull out a thick manila folder.
The folder labeled with Sarah’s name and medical records.
Nora raised the heavy brass lamp above her head.
She took a fast, silent step toward Vance's back.
Vance suddenly turned around, his eyes wide with surprise.
He swung his heavy leather briefcase directly at Nora's face.
The briefcase struck Nora hard across her cheek.
She hit the concrete floor with a violent thud.
May you like
The brass lamp clattered away into the darkness.
Vance laughed cold, heartless laughter as he raised his heavy leather boot above her chest.
