Chapter 4 - The Ballroom Went Silent

A collective gasp moved through the Grand Aster ballroom.

The photograph on the screen had been taken at the hospital less than four hours earlier. Maya’s cheek was swollen. Her lip was split. Blood stained the front of her dress.

Beside it appeared an image of the two teeth that had landed in my palm.

I had not ordered those photographs displayed.

I turned toward Harrison.

He shook his head.

Then I saw Rebecca Shaw standing beside the audiovisual control desk.

She raised her phone slightly.

The images were part of the legal presentation prepared for the custody hearing. Someone on the event staff had mistakenly opened the wrong file when switching to my father’s announcement materials.

Or perhaps it was not a mistake.

Either way, the truth now towered twenty feet above the room.

Genevieve stared at the screen.

“That is manipulated,” she said.

No one answered.

Julian grabbed my arm.

“Take it down.”

I pulled free.

“Do not touch me.”

“This is defamation!”

“It is your daughter.”

His eyes darted toward the reporters gathered near the back of the ballroom.

Phones were already raised.

Guests had begun recording.

My father remained still, holding Maya against his chest.

He looked at Genevieve.

“Did you strike this child?”

Genevieve straightened her shoulders.

“Mr. Blackwood, I understand this looks upsetting, but Maya threw herself at me. I moved her away, and she fell.”

Maya lifted her tear-streaked face.

“You hit me four times.”

Genevieve’s mouth tightened.

“She is confused.”

“No,” Maya whispered. “You said I was ruining your wedding.”

The silence deepened.

My father’s gaze shifted to Julian.

“And you?”

Julian looked around the room, searching for the confident smile that had carried him through years of negotiations.

It did not come.

“I arrived afterward.”

Mrs. Carter’s voice rose from behind us.

“No, you did not.”

She walked through the crowd wearing a simple black dress. Two other members of the household staff followed her.

Julian’s face changed.

“What are you doing here?”

“Speaking the truth.”

Mrs. Carter stopped beside me.

“You watched everything.”

One of the other employees, a young waiter named Luis, stepped forward.

“You told me to leave the room after the drink spilled,” he said. “But I stayed behind the column. I saw Miss Cross hit Maya.”

Genevieve pointed at him.

“You are fired.”

“No,” Harrison said. “He is not.”

The crowd parted as he approached.

“The Vance household staff are employed through Blackwood Residential Services. Their assignments to your property ended this afternoon.”

Victoria appeared at the edge of the group.

She had arrived late and wore a dark green gown. Makeup barely concealed the mark on her cheek.

“This is a setup!” she shouted. “Eleanor has spent all day manipulating people because she is jealous of Genevieve.”

Several guests exchanged glances.

I stepped toward her.

“I am not jealous of a woman who beats children.”

Victoria raised her chin.

“You assaulted me.”

“You tried to strike me while I was holding Maya.”

“You have no proof.”

Luis spoke again.

“I saw that too.”

Victoria’s face went pale.

My father handed Maya to me.

She clung to my neck while he stepped onto the stage.

He did not need to ask for silence.

The room was already completely still.

“My granddaughter was assaulted this morning,” he said into the microphone. “The people responsible believed wealth and social influence would protect them.”

Genevieve’s father, Senator Malcolm Cross, hurried toward the stage.

“Richard, we should discuss this privately.”

My father looked down at him.

“Your daughter beat a five-year-old child.”

“There are conflicting accounts.”

“There are witnesses, medical records and a child who identified her attacker in front of eight hundred people.”

The senator lowered his voice.

“Think carefully. Public accusations could damage both families.”

My father’s expression did not change.

“Only one family here protected an abuser.”

The senator stepped back.

My father turned toward the audience.

“The Blackwood Foundation gala was intended to announce a new investment program. One company expected to receive significant funding was the Vance Group.”

Julian moved toward the stage.

“Mr. Blackwood—”

“That company will receive nothing.”

Whispers erupted.

“Furthermore, Blackwood Global has suspended all commercial relationships with the Vance Group pending an investigation into financial misconduct.”

Julian’s face reddened.

“You cannot destroy a public company because of a family disagreement!”

My father looked at him.

“This is not punishment for a family disagreement. Your company is being investigated because twelve million dollars disappeared into shell entities associated with Genevieve Cross.”

Every eye turned toward her.

Genevieve stared at Julian.

He stared back.

“What is he talking about?” Julian asked.

“I don’t know.”

Harrison handed documents to the hotel’s security director, who distributed copies to several board members standing nearby.

One of them, Charles Pendleton, flipped through the pages.

“These transfers are real,” he said.

Julian grabbed the papers from him.

He scanned the first page.

His lips parted.

“Genevieve?”

She took a step backward.

“This is fabricated.”

“The account is registered to your brother,” Julian said.

“My brother manages several businesses.”

“You told me the consulting payments were for international permits.”

“They were.”

Harrison spoke from the floor.

“The receiving company has no employees, no office and no active contracts. Three million dollars were later transferred to purchase a villa in Saint-Jean-Cap-Ferrat.”

Julian looked as if someone had struck him.

“A villa?”

Genevieve turned toward her father.

“Daddy, say something.”

Senator Cross did not move.

Victoria pushed forward.

“This has nothing to do with Julian. Genevieve handled those transactions.”

My father glanced at her.

“Would you like us to discuss the five million dollars transferred to your account this afternoon?”

Victoria froze.

Julian slowly turned toward his mother.

“What?”

“It was a protective transfer,” she said quickly. “I was safeguarding family assets.”

“You took five million dollars from my company?”

“Our company.”

“You have no ownership.”

“I built the Vance name before you were born.”

The argument erupted in front of the entire ballroom.

Genevieve accused Victoria of betraying Julian.

Victoria accused Genevieve of stealing from the company.

Julian shouted at both of them.

Maya pressed her hands over her ears.

That was enough.

I stepped between them.

“Stop.”

My voice was not loud, but Julian fell silent.

I looked at him.

“You are frightening her again.”

For the first time that evening, something resembling shame flickered across his face.

It vanished quickly.

“You did this,” he said. “You planned all of it.”

“No. You did.”

I shifted Maya higher in my arms.

“You chose your mistress over your daughter. You allowed your mother to treat us like servants. You took every opportunity my family secretly gave you and convinced yourself that you earned it alone.”

His eyes narrowed.

“What opportunities?”

My father answered.

“The Vance Group would have collapsed four years ago without a loan from Meridian Capital.”

Julian looked confused.

“Meridian is independent.”

“It is owned by Blackwood Financial.”

The room murmured.

“Your Harbor Point project received emergency construction materials when every other supplier rejected you,” my father continued. “Those materials came from Blackwood Steel.”

Julian’s confidence drained away.

“The zoning approval for your Hudson development was delayed,” I said. “I asked Harrison to help resolve it.”

“You?”

“Yes.”

“The insurance extension last year?”

“My father.”

“The Japanese investors?”

“Introduced through a Blackwood subsidiary.”

He stared at me.

Everything he believed about himself was collapsing.

“You made me successful,” he whispered.

“No. I gave you chances. You decided what kind of man to become after receiving them.”

Sirens sounded outside.

Genevieve’s head snapped toward the doors.

Two detectives entered the ballroom with the deputy commissioner.

Senator Cross moved quickly.

“Officers, before you do anything, my attorneys—”

The lead detective ignored him.

“Genevieve Cross?”

Genevieve backed away.

“This is ridiculous.”

“You are under arrest on suspicion of felony assault against a minor.”

Cameras flashed.

She looked at Julian.

“Do something.”

He did not move.

The detective reached for her wrist.

Genevieve’s composure shattered.

“Julian told me to discipline her!”

Julian’s face went white.

Every reporter in the ballroom surged closer.

“What did you say?” the detective asked.

Genevieve pointed at him.

“He said Maya was ruining everything. He told me to make sure she behaved before the gala.”

“That is a lie,” Julian said.

“You disabled the cameras!”

“I disabled them because you said you wanted privacy while changing your dress.”

Genevieve laughed wildly.

“You knew exactly what I intended to do.”

Victoria stepped between them.

“Both of you, stop talking.”

The detective turned to Julian.

“Mr. Vance, we would like you to accompany us for questioning.”

“I am not under arrest.”

“Not at this time.”

Julian looked at me.

For one second, I saw the same man who had once stood beneath an oak tree and promised to love me forever.

Then the mask returned.

“You think you won,” he said.

“I got Maya out. That is the only victory I needed.”

Genevieve was led away in handcuffs.

Julian followed the officers through the ballroom while guests stepped aside as though he carried a disease.

Victoria stood alone.

Her diamonds still sparkled, but no one approached her.

The gala never returned to its planned celebration.

My father canceled the speeches and asked everyone to leave.

Within minutes, videos of Maya’s accusation began spreading online.

News alerts appeared before we reached the hotel elevator.

MISSING BLACKWOOD HEIRESS RETURNS AFTER SIX YEARS

I did not read further.

Maya had begun crying again.

Back at Blackwood House, I sat beside her bed until she fell asleep.

At midnight, Harrison entered quietly.

“Genevieve has been charged.”

“And Julian?”

“Released after questioning. He insists he did not expect her to use violence.”

“Do the detectives believe him?”

“They are undecided.”

He handed me a sealed envelope.

“This arrived from the Vance mansion.”

Inside was a handwritten note from Julian.

You took my company, my reputation and my daughter. I will prove you are no better than I am.

Beneath the note was a photograph.

It showed my father meeting privately with Senator Cross three years earlier.

On the back, Julian had written one sentence.

Ask Richard what he promised Genevieve’s father before your mother died.

I stared at the picture.

May you like

For the first time that night, my father had hidden something from me.

And whatever it was, Julian believed it could tear the Blackwood family apart.
