Chapter 12 - The Trap Inside the Trust

The house went dark.

Ruiz drew her weapon.

Andrés pulled me behind him.

Mariana stood frozen beside the cabinet.

Then someone struck the front door.

Once.

Twice.

Three times.

“Police!” Ruiz shouted.

Silence.

Then footsteps.

Running away.

The officers went outside.

We stayed inside.

Mariana finally opened the envelope.

Inside was a memory card.

She handed it to Ruiz.

The recording showed my mother sitting at her desk.

She looked tired.

Afraid.

But determined.

“If you're watching this, I failed to stop them.”

I cried silently.

My mother's voice continued.

“Sergio is being pressured by Arturo.”

She explained that Arturo had created debts using Sergio's company.

The goal was never simply to steal the trust.

The real goal was to gain control over a chain of companies my mother had secretly purchased years earlier.

The trust held shares.

Shares worth far more than the 7.8 million pesos.

My mother had built a financial shield around me and Nicolás.

If Arturo gained control, he would control those companies.

My mother had refused.

She had been threatened.

She had documented everything.

Then came the final revelation.

“I have one person inside Arturo's organization.”

The screen showed a name.

Mariana.

Mariana covered her face.

“I was trying to help her.”

“You did,” I whispered.

“No. I was too afraid.”

The recording continued.

“If I die, Mariana must give my daughter the evidence.”

She looked directly into the camera.

“And tell Elena that her father did not abandon her.”

I froze.

“My father?”

Mariana looked at me.

“You don't know?”

“No.”

She shook her head.

“Your mother never told you.”

The police returned.

They had caught one of the men outside.

He carried a phone.

The phone contained messages from Arturo.

One message said:

Get the girl to sign before the trustee activates the protection.

The trustee.

Elena.

I suddenly understood.

The entire scheme depended on preventing the trust from activating.

And my survival had made that impossible.

But there was another problem.

The emergency clause had not yet been completed.

Elena needed my confirmation.

I signed.

The trust immediately transferred into protected control.

The bank sent a confirmation.

Emergency protection activated.

For the first time, I breathed freely.

Then Sergio was brought into the room.

He looked broken.

“I want to tell you something.”

I didn't want to hear him.

But I did.

“I didn't know Arturo would hurt you.”

“You knew enough.”

“Yes.”

“Why didn't you stop?”

He cried.

“I was afraid.”

I stared at him.

“You were afraid of losing money.”

He lowered his head.

“I was afraid of losing everything.”

“You already had.”

He looked at me.

“What do you mean?”

“My trust was never our future.”

I touched the photograph of Nicolás.

“This is.”

Sergio said nothing.

Then Ruiz's phone rang.

She answered.

Her face changed.

“What happened?”

She listened.

Then looked at me.

“Arturo has been arrested.”

I exhaled.

But Ruiz didn't smile.

“There is one problem.”

May you like

“What?”

“He's asking to speak to you.”
