Chapter 4 - The Second Ledger

The man was not Daniel Valente.
He was Marcus Dane.
Eliza stared at him.
Lucian's guards immediately moved forward.
Marcus raised both hands.
“I can explain.”
Lucian's voice was ice.
“You have approximately ten seconds.”
Marcus placed the ledger on a table.
“I received it this morning.”
“From whom?” Eliza asked.
“Ethan.”
Her stomach tightened.
Marcus explained that Ethan had contacted him before dawn.
He wanted protection.
In exchange, he offered the ledger.
“Protection from Lucian?”
Marcus looked at Eliza.
“No. From whoever has been controlling him.”
That changed everything.
Ethan was guilty of betrayal.
Forgery.
Infidelity.
But perhaps he was also afraid.
The ledger contained twenty years of transactions.
Shell companies.
Payments.
Dates.
Eliza recognized her mother's handwriting on the first pages.
Then another person's handwriting took over after her death.
Someone had continued her investigation.
“Daniel,” Lucian said.
The final pages were recent.
One company appeared repeatedly.
CROWN MERIDIAN.
Rebecca searched corporate records.
Its beneficial owner was hidden behind trusts.
But one name appeared on an old filing.
Richard Hartwell.
Ethan's father.
A dead man.
Again.
Eliza rubbed her temples.
“I am becoming very tired of dead men doing paperwork.”
Lucian almost smiled.
They traced a payment from Crown Meridian to Ethan.
Two million dollars.
Three months earlier.
“What was it for?” Eliza asked.
Marcus shook his head.
“Ethan wouldn't say.”
That evening, Eliza agreed to meet Ethan.
Public place.
Lucian's hotel.
Rebecca nearby.
Ethan arrived looking exhausted.
No polished executive.
No perfect husband.
Just a frightened man who had made terrible choices.
“Who paid you two million dollars?”
He stared at the table.
“My father.”
“Your father is dead.”
“I thought so too.”
Eliza went cold.
Ethan explained.
Six months earlier, he received a photograph.
His father alive.
Older.
Living somewhere overseas.
Then came instructions.
Sell the company to Lucian.
Remove Eliza's ownership.
Do not let her attend the gala.
“Why?”
“I wasn't told.”
“And you obeyed?”
“He knew things about Sophie.”
Eliza's chair scraped backward.
“What things?”
“Her school. Her schedule. Claire's address.”
Rage replaced fear.
“You should have told me.”
“I thought I could handle it.”
“You forged my signature!”
“I was trying to keep you away from them.”
“You humiliated me because you were protecting me?”
Ethan looked ashamed.
“No.”
At least he did not hide behind that.
“That part was me.”
Eliza stared.
“I was angry. Scared. Vanessa made me feel like I was still the man everyone thought I was.”
“And I didn't?”
“You knew who I really was.”
The answer was devastating in its honesty.
Eliza leaned back.
“So you punished me for knowing you.”
“Yes.”
Silence.
For the first time, Ethan looked like a man who understood exactly what he had destroyed.
“I am sorry.”
Eliza believed he meant it.
That did not repair anything.
“Who contacted you?”
“I never saw him.”
“Phone?”
“Messages.”
“Show me.”
Ethan handed over his phone.
Lucian's team traced the number.
Burner.
But one image remained.
A meeting location.
An abandoned theater.
Tomorrow midnight.
Ethan had been ordered to bring the original shareholder agreement.
Lucian wanted to send security.
Eliza had another idea.
“No.”
Everyone looked at her.
“I'll go.”
Lucian's answer was immediate.
“Absolutely not.”
“They want me excluded because I'm important to this.”
“That doesn't mean you walk into a trap.”
“No. It means we make them think I did.”
They built the plan.
Ethan would arrive carrying a duplicate agreement.
Eliza would remain in a surveillance van.
Lucian's team would cover every exit.
At 11:57 the next night, Ethan entered the theater.
Eliza watched through cameras.
A figure appeared onstage.
Older man.
Gray hair.
Ethan stopped.
“Dad?”
Eliza's blood froze.
Richard Hartwell stepped into the light.
Alive.
He smiled at his son.
“You've always been disappointing, Ethan.”
Ethan's face crumpled.
“You threatened my daughter.”
“I motivated you.”
“Why Eliza?”
Richard smiled.
“Because her mother stole something from me.”
In the van, Eliza leaned toward the monitor.
Lucian stood behind her.
Richard continued.
“Margaret found the ledger. She thought she could expose us.”
“Us?”
Richard's smile faded.
“She never understood who she was dealing with.”
“Did you kill her?”
Richard said nothing.
Ethan stepped closer.
“Did you kill Eliza's mother?”
“No.”
Eliza released a breath.
Then Richard added, “But I know who did.”
Lucian moved toward the van door.
Eliza stopped him.
“Wait.”
Richard held out his hand.
“The agreement.”
Ethan gave him the folder.
Richard opened it.
His expression changed.
“This is a copy.”
Lights exploded across the theater.
Gunfire cracked.
The surveillance feed vanished.
“Eliza, stay here,” Lucian ordered.
He ran.
Eliza watched dead screens.
Seconds became unbearable.
Then one camera returned.
Ethan lay behind a seat.
Alive.
Lucian's men moved through the theater.
Richard was gone.
A hidden passage.
They found blood but no body.
Ethan had been shot in the shoulder.
At the hospital, Eliza sat beside his bed.
Not as his wife.
As the mother of his child.
“You came,” he whispered.
“Sophie needs you alive.”
He nodded.
Tears filled his eyes.
“I ruined everything.”
“Yes.”
He almost laughed.
“Still honest.”
“You've had enough lies.”
Before leaving, Ethan caught her hand.
“My father said something before the lights went out.”
“What?”
“He said Margaret trusted the wrong Valente.”
Eliza went still.
“Which Valente?”
“I don't know.”
She returned to the hallway.
Lucian waited.
She told him.
His expression became unreadable.
“My father had two brothers,” he said.
“Daniel and?”
“Victor.”
“Where's Victor?”
Lucian looked at her.
“He runs my security.”
Eliza's blood chilled.
The man who had been beside Lucian every night.
The man who had access to every investigation.
Every document.
Every location.
Lucian immediately called his security chief.
No answer.
They drove to Lucian's estate.
Victor's rooms were empty.
His computers wiped.
But inside a locked drawer they found a photograph.
Margaret.
Richard.
Daniel.
Victor.
All four standing together.
On the back was written:
FOUR PEOPLE KNOW.
ONE WILL SURVIVE.
Eliza turned the photograph over again.
Something was tucked behind it.
A recent picture.
Sophie leaving school.
Eliza stopped breathing.
Her phone rang.
Claire.
She answered instantly.
“Eliza!”
Her sister was screaming.
“Sophie is gone.”
Eliza's knees nearly buckled.
“What?”
“Someone took her from the house.”
Lucian grabbed his phone.
Eliza heard Claire sobbing.
Then a message arrived from an unknown number.
A photograph of Sophie sitting in a chair.
Alive.
Terrified.
Below it were six words.
BRING THE LEDGER. COME WITHOUT LUCIAN.
May you like
Then another message appeared.
COME TO WHERE YOUR MOTHER DIED.
