Chapter 17 - The Grandson Who Came Back Alone

Denise had not disappeared.
Her ankle monitor had failed.
For forty-three minutes, nobody could verify her location.
Lauren panicked.
Ethan drove her to me because, in his words, “I didn’t know where else felt safe.”
Old habit.
Wrong choice.
But understandable.
I did not invite Lauren in.
I called her supervising officer.
By the time we finished, Denise had been located at a medical clinic.
Device malfunction.
No escape.
No new crime.
Lauren stood on my porch shaking.
I brought her water.
Outside.
Boundary and compassion occupying the same square foot.
When the panic passed, she looked embarrassed.
“I’m sorry.”
“It was frightening.”
“I shouldn’t have come.”
“No.”
She nodded.
Ethan looked guilty.
“I shouldn’t have brought her.”
“No.”
He exhaled.
“I keep learning the same lesson.”
“Most lessons charge tuition repeatedly.”
Lauren almost smiled.
Then she left in a rideshare.
Ethan stayed.
“I messed up.”
“Yes.”
“You’re not furious?”
“I am not required to turn every mistake into a trial.”
He sat on the porch step.
I sat beside him.
For a while, we watched cars pass.
Then he said:
“I’m seeing Lauren again.”
“I assumed.”
“Dating.”
I looked at him.
He waited.
“Okay.”
“That’s all?”
“You are thirty-two.”
“I know.”
“Do you?”
He smiled.
“Yes.”
“Does she hit you?”
His smile vanished.
“No.”
“Does she blame me?”
“No.”
“Does she expect access to me?”
“No.”
“Then your relationship is your decision.”
He nodded.
“I told her if we ever got engaged again, it would not happen quickly.”
“Good.”
“And we would do premarital counseling.”
“Good.”
“And no family money.”
“Excellent.”
He laughed.
“I knew you’d like that.”
“I am predictable.”
“No. You’re clearer.”
That felt like a compliment.
Over the next year, life became less dramatic.
That was the happiest development.
Denise completed restitution.
Lauren worked.
Therapy.
No grand declarations.
No surprise visits.
She repaid the six thousand dollars to the wedding account.
Ethan used his share to pay down the legitimate portion of the loan after lawyers untangled the rest.
Then he closed the account.
Hale Family Wedding Account ceased to exist.
Good riddance.
Lauren wrote to me twice.
