Chapter 5 - The Dead Man at the Gate

Matteo did not enter immediately.
Vittorio refused to open the door until police and attorneys were notified.
That surprised Matteo.
He had expected the old Serrano rules.
Silence.
Fear.
Family problems handled privately.
Vittorio refused to play by those rules.
When Matteo was finally admitted under supervision, he looked like an elderly gentleman rather than the architect of decades of manipulation.
That made him more frightening.
He greeted Sofia as though they had last spoken yesterday.
Then he looked at me.
“Gabriel’s daughter.”
I hated hearing him define me.
“My name is Rosalie.”
He smiled.
“Of course.”
Matteo claimed Gabriel misunderstood everything.
The money network had supposedly been created to protect Serrano assets.
Gabriel wanted legitimacy.
Matteo believed survival required secrecy.
Their disagreement became war.
Then Matteo revealed why he had returned.
Gabriel’s archive contained evidence capable of destroying him.
He wanted it.
I refused.
He offered me fifty million dollars.
I refused again.
Charles stared at me like I had lost my mind.
That told me everything about him.
Matteo increased the offer.
One hundred million.
“No.”
He looked genuinely curious.
“What do you want?”
“The truth.”
“That is usually more expensive.”
“Then you should have saved more money.”
Vittorio almost smiled.
Matteo didn’t.
He claimed Robert Hale had been his operative.
My mother denied it.
I denied it.
Then Matteo produced photographs of Robert meeting Luca.
Vittorio examined them.
Something was wrong.
Dates.
Robert supposedly met Luca in Philadelphia on a day my childhood photographs placed him with me in Baltimore.
The images had been altered.
Matteo had come prepared to rewrite my memories.
But Gabriel’s archive contained originals.
Robert had infiltrated Matteo’s organization after Gabriel’s death.
He protected me for eleven years.
He died because Luca discovered what he was doing.
My mother broke down.
For years, she had believed Robert’s death was random.
Now she learned he had died protecting us.
Preston unexpectedly stepped forward.
He offered his phone.
There were deleted messages he had recovered from a cloud backup.
Luca had ordered him to move the money.
Charles had known.
Matteo had approved everything.
For the first time, Preston stopped hiding behind excuses.
He admitted what he did.
All of it.
He agreed to cooperate with investigators.
Charles called him an idiot.
Preston answered quietly.
“No, Dad. I was an idiot when I listened to you.”
Something shifted.
Not forgiveness.
But accountability.
Matteo realized control was slipping away.
He stood.
“I’m leaving.”
Vittorio didn’t stop him.
Police were already waiting beyond the property.
Matteo smiled.
“You think paperwork can bury men like me?”
“No,” Vittorio said. “Evidence can.”
Matteo’s expression darkened.
Then he looked at me.
“Ask your mother what Gabriel planned to do with you.”
Mom froze.
I turned.
“What does he mean?”
Matteo left without explaining.
My mother tried to avoid the question.
I wouldn’t let her.
Finally she confessed.
Gabriel had created more than a trust.
He had written instructions about my future.
If anything happened to him, I was supposed to be raised within the Serrano family.
My mother refused.
She ran.
I understood why.
She had been terrified.
But Sofia had spent thirty-four years believing Gabriel died childless.
Vittorio had grown up never knowing he had a cousin.
Everyone had lost something because of secrecy.
I went outside alone.
Vittorio followed but kept his distance.
“Do you regret finding me?” I asked.
“No.”
The answer came too quickly to be polite.
I looked at him.
He continued.
“I regret how you were brought here.”
For the first time that day, I smiled.
Small.
Exhausted.
Real.
“You really opened your arms to me.”
“You looked like you thought I was going to hurt you.”
“I did.”
“That bothered me.”
“Why?”
His expression softened.
“Because someone had worked very hard to make you afraid of the wrong man.”
Before I could answer, Marco ran outside.
“Vittorio.”
He held a phone.
“Luca’s been found.”
“Where?”
Marco looked at me.
“At Rosalie’s apartment.”
My stomach dropped.
“Why?”
“He wasn’t alone.”
Marco turned the phone around.
The security image showed Luca entering my building.
Beside him was a woman wearing a hood.
She looked directly into the camera.
My mother stared at the image.
May you like
Then whispered:
“That woman is Isabella.”
