Chapter 7 - Antonio Vitali’s Last Secret

“Antonio.”

Lorenzo stopped breathing.

The voice on the phone repeated his name.

“Lorenzo.”

My husband went white.

I handed him the receiver.

“Father?”

A pause.

Then the line disconnected.

We traced the call.

It came from a prepaid relay.

No location.

No proof.

Only a voice.

Lorenzo sat beside the storage unit for several minutes without speaking.

I didn't tell him what to feel.

I sat beside him.

Finally he said, “If he's alive, he left me.”

“Maybe.”

He looked at me.

I wouldn't give him a comforting lie.

“Or maybe there's something we don't know.”

The ledger provided part of it.

Antonio had documented decades of corruption.

Gabriel.

Daniel Moretti.

Officials.

Developers.

But the final pages were different.

Antonio described discovering the fake account in Lorenzo's name.

He planned to expose Gabriel.

Then came one final entry.

IF THEY BELIEVE I AM DEAD, MY SON LIVES.

Lorenzo read it three times.

Antonio had staged his death.

Not because he wanted freedom.

Because Gabriel had threatened Lorenzo.

Samuel had helped.

Rosa hadn't known.

The ledger contained enough evidence to reopen dozens of investigations.

But one page had been removed.

The page listing the person who authorized the forged property records.

Someone still protected Gabriel.

Someone inside the current city administration.

Camille called.

Ethan had been released pending investigation.

Gabriel too.

Kidnapping charges were complicated because Camille had initially entered Pier 17 voluntarily, and the gunman had disappeared.

But financial investigators were moving.

We had the ledger.

Gabriel had lost control.

That made him more dangerous.

The next morning, I held a press conference.

Alone at the podium.

Lorenzo watched from the back.

I presented timestamps proving Haven House was mine.

I showed early drawings.

Emails.

Physical models.

My mother's paper pattern.

I did not mention Lorenzo's power.

I did not need it.

Then Camille stepped forward.

She publicly confirmed Ethan had stolen my files.

Reporters erupted.

Cole Development's board suspended Ethan within an hour.

The forty-million-dollar contract was frozen.

By afternoon, three investors withdrew.

Ethan called me seventeen times.

I answered the eighteenth.

“You ruined me.”

“No, Ethan.”

I looked through the glass walls of my studio.

“You just finally ran out of people to blame.”

“You think Lorenzo loves you?”

I said nothing.

“He loves control.”

“Goodbye.”

“Ask him what happened to Daniel Moretti.”

I stopped.

“What?”

The call ended.

I found Lorenzo in the conference room.

“Who was Daniel Moretti?”

His expression told me Ethan had found one truth among all his lies.

“Gabriel's uncle.”

“I know.”

Lorenzo looked toward the window.

“And?”

“I killed him.”

The room became very quiet.

“When?”

“I was twenty-two.”

“Why?”

“He came after me after my father's death.”

“Came after you how?”

“With a gun.”

Self-defense.

But Lorenzo hadn't gone to police.

His family had buried the incident.

“I spent years telling myself I had no choice,” he said.

“Did you?”

“No.”

The answer surprised me.

“I had a choice afterward. I could have told the truth.”

“Why didn't you?”

“Because I was twenty-two, angry, frightened, and surrounded by men who told me consequences were for weaker people.”

He looked at me.

“I became someone I don't want you defending.”

I walked toward him.

“Then I won't defend what you did.”

Pain crossed his face.

“But I'm not leaving you alone with it either.”

His eyes closed.

I touched his hand.

“We tell the truth.”

“It could destroy everything.”

“Then we build something better afterward.”

That evening Lorenzo contacted an attorney and arranged to give a formal statement.

No shortcuts.

No intimidation.

No disappearing evidence.

The choice cost him.

Several business partners walked away.

Old associates called him a traitor.

He didn't change his mind.

Neither did I.

Then Camille arrived carrying an envelope.

It had been delivered to her apartment.

Inside was the missing ledger page.

One name appeared beside the forged property authorization.

VICTOR COLE.

Ethan's father.

Ethan hadn't started this.

He had inherited it.

And according to the page, Victor Cole had met Antonio the night Antonio supposedly died.

Lorenzo stared at the signature.

“My father trusted him.”

Camille looked frightened.

“Victor is coming back to the city tonight.”

I frowned.

“Where has he been?”

“Switzerland.”

“For how long?”

“Eleven years.”

My phone buzzed.

Unknown number.

A photograph appeared.

Antonio Vitali.

Older.

Alive.

Standing outside the airport.

Beside him stood Victor Cole.

Then another message arrived.

COME TO TERMINAL FOUR IF YOU WANT TO KNOW WHICH ONE OF THEM BETRAYED YOUR MOTHER.

We reached the airport twenty minutes later.

Terminal Four was nearly empty.

A private-arrivals door opened.

One man stepped through.

Lorenzo whispered, “Dad.”

Antonio Vitali lifted his eyes.

Then someone walked through the doorway behind him...
