Chapter 4 - THE AUDIT AND THE CONFRONTATION

The forensic audit ordered by Derek’s court-appointed financial restructuring lawyer revealed an even darker picture than we had anticipated.
Amber hadn't just been careless; she had been reckless. Over three years, she had taken out two personal loans in Derek’s name without his explicit knowledge, using forged digital signatures to cover the minimum payments on her luxury credit cards. She had built a complete illusion of upper-middle-class prosperity on a foundation of mountain-high debt, fully expecting that my eventual passing—or my guilt—would clean up the mess.
When Derek presented her with the audit findings at their dining table, backed by his legal counsel, Amber didn't apologize. She exploded.
She stormed out of their apartment and drove straight to my house at eight o'clock on a Thursday evening.
I was sitting in my living room reading a book when I heard her tires screech in my driveway. Heavy pounding echoed through my front door. I didn't panic. I calmly reached into my pocket, activated the audio recording app on my phone, and opened the door, leaving the heavy brass chain latch engaged.
"Open this door, Sylvia!" Amber screamed through the crack, her face red, her hair unkempt. "You evil, manipulative old woman! You’re ruining my marriage! You’re turning Derek against me!"
"Amber," I said, my voice steady and measured. "You are screaming on my porch at eight at night. Leave immediately or I will call the police."
"You think you’re so smart with your millions!" she shrieked, pressing her face close to the gap in the door. "You’re keeping money that belongs to my children! You’re letting Lucas and Sophie live in a cramped apartment while you sit in this big house all by yourself! What kind of grandmother does that?"
"A grandmother who knows the difference between protecting her grandchildren and funding their mother's shopping addiction," I replied coldly. "You forged my son's signature, Amber. You put your family in sixty thousand dollars of credit card debt and two personal loans just to maintain an image on social media. I am not the one who put Lucas and Sophie in that apartment. You did."
"I will take those kids away from this family!" she threatened, her eyes wide with rage. "You will never see Lucas or Sophie again! I’ll make sure of it!"
"That is where you are profoundly mistaken," I said smoothly. "My attorney has already filed a motion for third-party visitation rights under grandparent visitation statutes, citing the years of financial and emotional support I provided as their primary caregiver. Furthermore, the evidence of your financial fraud in Derek’s name has been documented. If you push this to court, the judge will see every single receipt, every forged signature, and every maxed-out credit card."
Amber froze. The color drained from her face as the reality of her legal exposure finally hit her. She realized she wasn't dealing with a frail, grieving widow who could be guilted into submission. She was dealing with a former corporate CFO who had managed hundred-million-dollar budgets and legal teams for a living.
"You... you recorded this?" she whispered, noticing the glow of my phone in my hand.

"Every word," I said. "Now, get off my property before I press charges for trespass and harassment."
She backed away slowly, her venom replacing itself with sheer terror, before turning around and running back to her car.
