Chapter 5 - The Photograph in Her Clutch

The woman behind the door was Lauren’s mother.

Margaret Whitaker held an old leather clutch.

Claire stared at it.

“That belonged to Catherine.”

Margaret nodded.

“I know.”

Inside were letters.

Dozens.

Catherine had written them during her final summer at Hawthorne.

Some were addressed to Claire.

Some to Grant.

One to Robert.

Margaret had hidden them for seventeen years.

“Why?” Claire asked.

“Because I was afraid.”

Margaret confessed that Catherine had discovered more than financial fraud.

Grant’s father had been paying officials, manipulating property auctions, and forcing struggling families to sell land.

Margaret had accidentally seen Catherine copying documents.

That night, Catherine asked Margaret to take the evidence if anything happened.

Then Catherine died.

Margaret panicked.

She hid the clutch.

“Why bring it tonight?” Lauren demanded.

“Because your father finally decided to tell the truth.”

Robert appeared behind us.

He looked at Margaret.

“You kept it?”

“All of it.”

Grant opened one letter.

His hands shook.

It was Catherine’s final note to him.

Grant,

You think protecting your father makes you loyal. It only makes you afraid.

I do love you.

But I will not become someone who calls silence love.

Grant sat down.

Lauren watched him.

Something changed between them.

Not forgiveness.

Understanding.

Claire opened the letter addressed to her.

Little C,

If I ever disappear, remember that you were never responsible for saving me.

Live loudly.

Choose people who choose you.

And if a man ever makes you feel grateful for crumbs, throw the whole loaf at his head.

Claire laughed and cried simultaneously.

I touched her shoulder.

She leaned into me for one second.

Then Robert found another photograph.

It showed Catherine on the balcony.

Behind her stood Grant’s father.

And another figure.

A woman.

Margaret.

Lauren stared at her mother.

“You were there?”

Margaret shook her head.

“I arrived afterward.”

“The photograph says otherwise.”

“I didn’t know anyone took that.”

Claire turned it over.

Writing covered the back.

Catherine’s handwriting.

M knows everything.

If something happens to me, ask her why she came upstairs.

Margaret backed toward the door.

Robert whispered her name.

She ran.

Lauren followed.

We heard a crash downstairs.

By the time we reached the ballroom, Margaret was gone.

Her abandoned phone lay beside Table Twelve.

The screen lit.

An incoming message.

Lauren picked it up.

The sender was saved under one word.

CATHERINE.

Claire stopped breathing.

The message appeared.

I KNOW YOU FOUND THE LETTERS.

May you like

Then another arrived.

NOW ASK MARGARET WHY SHE TOLD EVERYONE I WAS DEAD.
