Chapter 9 - The Lie That Destroyed the Family

I couldn't move.
Daniel stood in the doorway.
The missing brother.
The man everyone had told me was gone.
He looked at Álvaro.
“You finally told her.”
Álvaro looked away.
I whispered:
“Why did you disappear?”
Daniel's face hardened.
“Because Dad wanted me dead.”
Don Ernesto stood.
“That's not true.”
Daniel laughed.
“You still lie beautifully.”
He placed a flash drive on the desk.
“This contains everything.”
“What?”
“Every transaction. Every name. Every person who helped Dad.”
I looked at the ledger.
“Why didn't you go to the police?”
“Because the first officer I trusted was paid.”
I felt sick.
“Then why come back now?”
“Because you became the next target.”
Daniel explained that he had been living under protection for years.
He had watched from a distance.
He knew when Álvaro married me.
He knew when I became a surgeon.
He knew when my reputation became valuable.
He had warned Álvaro to keep me away from the business.
Álvaro failed.
“Why didn't you contact me?”
Daniel looked at him.
“Because your husband chose your father's side.”
Álvaro closed his eyes.
“I was trying to keep her safe.”
“You were trying to keep yourself safe.”
The brothers stared at each other.
I felt something inside me breaking.
Not because of Daniel.
Because of the years I had spent defending Álvaro.
I had told colleagues he was supportive.
I had told friends his family was difficult but harmless.
I had explained every strange behavior.
Every missing payment.
Every lie.
Every unexplained trip.
I had done all the work of making his betrayal understandable.
Now there was nothing left to explain.
Then Daniel said:
“There is one thing you still don't know.”
“What?”
“Your money wasn't used only to pay the debt.”
I looked at him.
“Where did it go?”
He opened the flash drive.
A list appeared.
Several payments had been made to a private facility.
I recognized the name.
Casa Esperanza Neurological Center.
Daniel looked at me.
“That is where I lived.”
My heart stopped.
“You?”
He nodded.
“After the attack, I survived.”
“Who paid for your treatment?”
He looked at Álvaro.
“Your husband.”
I stared at Álvaro.
“You paid for Daniel's treatment with my money?”
He nodded.
“I couldn't tell you.”
“You could have told me everything.”
“I was afraid.”
“Of what?”
“That Dad would kill him.”
Daniel lowered his eyes.
“He wasn't wrong.”
I looked at the ledger.
Then at the flash drive.
There was still something missing.
“Why was Esteban involved?”
Daniel answered.
“Because Esteban was the lender.”
“Then why does he want you?”
“He doesn't.”
I stared at him.
“Then who?”
Daniel's expression changed.
“The person behind Esteban.”
Silence.
“Who?”
He looked toward the window.
“Someone in this family.”
I felt my stomach tighten.
“No.”
“Yes.”
Daniel opened another file.
A name appeared.
Jimena Fuentes.
I stared at it.
Álvaro whispered:
“My sister?”
Daniel nodded.
“She wasn't just helping Dad.”
He turned the screen toward me.
“She was running the accounts.”
Then my phone rang.
Jimena.
I answered.
She didn't speak.
Instead, I heard her breathing.
Then she whispered:
“Mariana, don't trust Daniel.”
The line went dead.

A second later, a new message arrived.
Come to the restaurant. Alone.
