Chapter 6 - What Happened on the Stairs

I shoved Daniel’s photograph across the table and told Celeste:

“Tell me what he was afraid Maya would say.”

Celeste stared at the photograph.

Behind Daniel’s smiling face was a handwritten note recovered from Maya’s files:

HE DIDN’T PUSH ME FIRST.

I read it twice.

“What does ‘first’ mean?”

Celeste started crying.

“I think Maya survived the fall.”

The room went silent.

Marcus turned toward her.

“Explain.”

Celeste wiped her face.

“Daniel came to my apartment after the ambulance left.”

“You told us that.”

“He had blood on his cuff.”

My chest tightened.

“How much?”

“Not much.”

“Did he say what happened?”

“He said Maya fell.”

“Anything else?”

Celeste nodded.

“He kept saying, ‘She was still talking.’”

I felt sick.

Maya had survived long enough to speak.

The hospital report said she arrived unconscious.

“Who rode in the ambulance?” I asked.

“Vale.”

Of course.

Marcus called the hospital evidence team.

I called Evelyn.

No answer.

Again.

Nothing.

Then Marcus looked up.

“Security archive.”

“What?”

“The hospital kept ambulance bay footage.”

We watched it twelve minutes later.

The timestamp showed the night Maya died.

Ambulance doors opened.

Maya was wheeled out.

She moved.

Her hand rose.

She was conscious.

I stopped breathing.

“She was awake.”

Marcus nodded grimly.

The stretcher disappeared inside.

Eight minutes later, Daniel arrived.

Then my mother.

Then Adrian Cross.

I pointed.

“There.”

Adrian.

Seventy-six.

Silver hair.

Cane.

Walking into the hospital like he owned it.

Maybe he did.

“Why wasn’t he mentioned?”

Marcus checked.

“No visitor record.”

“He had help.”

“Yes.”

We jumped forward.

Forty-three minutes.

Vale emerged.

Then Daniel.

Then Adrian.

My mother didn’t.

“Where’s Mom?”

Marcus continued.

Two hours later, my mother exited alone.

She was crying.

I called her.

Straight to voicemail.

Then an encrypted email arrived at my government address.

FROM: REBECCA HART.

Subject:

I’M SORRY.

Attached video.

My mother appeared.

She was sitting somewhere dark.

“Lena,” she began, “if you’re seeing this, I finally stopped being afraid.”

I leaned toward the screen.

“The night Maya died, she was conscious at the hospital. She told me Daniel grabbed her during their argument. She pulled away. She fell.”

I closed my eyes.

Daniel hadn’t pushed her.

Not exactly.

My mother continued.

“But the fall did not kill her.”

I opened my eyes.

“Rose still had a heartbeat. Maya needed emergency surgery. The doctors believed they could save at least one of them.”

My hand covered my mouth.

“Adrian arrived before surgery.”

No.

“He threatened Vale. He said Maya had discovered too much. He told Daniel that if Maya survived, the entire program would be exposed.”

Tears streamed down my mother’s face.

“I begged Daniel to protect his wife.”

She stopped.

“He didn’t.”

My vision blurred.

“Daniel signed a medical directive delaying surgery.”

Marcus cursed.

“He claimed Maya had previously refused emergency intervention because of religious beliefs. It was a lie.”

I could barely hear the rest.

“By the time another physician challenged the directive, Maya had lost too much blood.”

My mother looked directly into the camera.

“Daniel did not push your sister down those stairs.”

Pause.

“He did something worse.”

“He stood beside her hospital bed and let her die.”

I closed my eyes.

“And Rose died with her.”

Silence filled the room.

Then my mother continued.

“I helped hide the truth.”

I looked up.

“Adrian threatened you, Lena. He had photographs of your apartment, your office, your car. He said if I spoke, you would be next.”

My mother wiped her face.

“So I stayed silent.”

She held something toward the camera.

A document.

“But Maya had already protected us.”

It was a consent form.

Signed by Daniel.

Authorizing the illegal procedure.

“Maya found the original.”

My mother lowered it.

“I have it now.”

Marcus stood.

“Where is she recording this?”

Analysts were already working.

My mother continued.

“Daniel came to me today because Adrian ordered him to retrieve it. I told Daniel I would give it to Adrian personally.”

My heart stopped.

“No, Mom.”

“If I can get Adrian to admit what he did, you’ll have what you need.”

“Mom, no.”

She couldn’t hear me.

The recording ended.

A location appeared.

Cross Estate.

Outside the city.

Marcus immediately called tactical units.

“You stay here.”

“No.”

“Lena.”

“That’s my mother.”

“And this is an active hostage-risk operation.”

“She went voluntarily.”

“That doesn’t make it safe.”

“I’m coming.”

He stared at me.

Then nodded once.

“Behind the perimeter.”

We reached Cross Estate forty minutes later.

Massive iron gates.

Stone house.

No visible guards.

Too quiet.

My mother’s car sat outside.

Daniel’s beside it.

Agents surrounded the property.

Marcus received authorization.

We entered.

The front door was unlocked.

Inside, voices came from a study.

Adrian.

Daniel.

My mother.

I remained behind the tactical team.

Then Daniel shouted.

“You told me she would never find out!”

Adrian answered calmly.

“You were weak.”

“She was my wife!”

“She was evidence.”

My mother said something too quietly to hear.

Then Adrian laughed.

“You think Lena will save you?”

I moved closer.

Marcus caught my arm.

Wait.

Inside, Daniel said:

“I never wanted Maya dead.”

Adrian replied:

“You signed the order.”

“You forced me.”

“No, Daniel. I gave you a choice.”

Silence.

Then my mother:

“And you chose yourself.”

A chair scraped.

Tactical agents prepared.

Marcus signaled.

Three.

Two.

One.

The door burst open.

“Federal agents!”

Daniel froze.

My mother stood beside the desk.

Adrian remained seated.

Calm.

Almost amused.

His eyes found me.

For the first time, I saw the man whose DNA had created Maya and me.

I felt nothing.

No connection.

No recognition.

Nothing.

“Lena,” he said.

I stepped into the doorway.

“Adrian Cross.”

He smiled.

“You look like your sister.”

“Don’t say her name.”

His smile faded.

Agents secured Daniel.

Another agent approached Adrian.

Then Adrian said:

“You should ask your mother why Maya went to the clinic in the first place.”

My mother went pale.

I looked at her.

“Mom?”

“Don’t listen.”

Adrian smiled again.

“Maya wasn’t investigating Daniel when this began.”

“Stop.”

My mother’s voice cracked.

Adrian continued.

“She was investigating you.”

I stared at him.

“What?”

My mother stepped toward me.

“Lena, please.”

“Why was Maya investigating me?”

Nobody answered.

Then Daniel began laughing.

Not because anything was funny.

Because he finally knew something I didn’t.

“You still haven’t opened the last file,” he said.

“What file?”

“The one Maya called LENA.”

Marcus looked at me.

The recovered drive had no folder with that name.

Daniel smiled.

“Because it isn’t on the drive.”

“Where is it?”

He looked toward my mother.

“She has it.”

My mother’s face collapsed.

I stepped toward her.

“What did Maya discover about me?”

May you like

She reached slowly into her coat.

And pulled out an envelope with my name written across the front.
