Chapter 5 - The Fourth Name

"Drop it."
Victor's voice changed instantly.
Daniel stood at the top of the stairs holding Nathaniel's gun.
For six years, I had imagined seeing my brother again.
In none of those fantasies was he armed.
"Daniel?"
His eyes found mine.
He looked older.
Thinner.
A scar ran beside his jaw.
But it was him.
He lowered the weapon.
I climbed the stairs and hit him across the chest.
Then I hugged him.
He held me while I cried.
"You idiot."
"I know."
"I hate you."
"I know."
"I missed you."
His arms tightened.
"I missed you too."
Victor came upstairs.
"Where did you get Nathaniel's gun?"
Daniel's expression changed.
"From Nathaniel."
My stomach dropped.
"Where is he?"
"On his way."
"Why do you have his gun?"
"Because he wanted me armed."
That sounded like Nathaniel.
I showed Daniel the trust.
Then told him about the video.
"The fourth name," I said. "Who is it?"
Daniel went still.
"You haven't watched the rest?"
"The power died."
He looked toward the basement.
"That wasn't an accident."
We heard a vehicle outside.
Victor moved toward the window.
"Three SUVs."
"Holloway?" I asked.
"No."
Daniel grabbed my hand.
"Back door."
We ran.
The first men entered as we crossed the yard.
Nobody fired.
They didn't need to.
We reached Daniel's vehicle and escaped through an alley.
Nathaniel called.
"Where are you?"
"With Daniel."
A pause.
"So you've seen him."
"Yes."
"Do you know the fourth name?"
"No."
"Then don't come home."
"Why?"
"Because Sebastian does."
I looked at Daniel.
"Who is it?"
Daniel gripped the steering wheel.
"Ethan."
I stared at him.
"My son?"
"Your mother named Lily as primary beneficiary and Ethan as protector."
"What does that mean?"
"If Lily is a minor when the trust activates, Ethan controls the voting rights until she's twenty-five."
Everything clicked.
Sebastian wasn't merely after Lily.
He needed Ethan too.
I called Ethan.
No answer.
Again.
Nothing.
"Nathaniel, where are the children?"
"Secured office."
"Check."
Silence.
Then movement.
Nathaniel shouted someone's name.
A door opened.
Another silence.
"Claire."
I knew before he said it.
"Ethan is gone."
Caleb and the youngest boy were safe.
Lily was safe.
But Ethan had disappeared from a building Nathaniel considered impenetrable.
Twenty minutes later, a message arrived.
A photograph.
Ethan sat in a chair inside an unfamiliar room.
He looked frightened but unharmed.
A document lay on the table.
Under the photograph:
BRING LILY AND THE ORIGINAL TRUST.
Nathaniel wanted to handle it his way.
For once, I refused.
"No."
"They have my son."
"Our son."
His eyes met mine.
"We do this together."
We studied everything.
The message.
The photograph.
The room.
Then I noticed Ethan's hand.
Three fingers rested against his knee.
One tapped twice.
Then three.
Then one.
It was something we had used when the children were small.
A family code.
2-3-1.
Second word.
Third word.
First word.
I applied it to the visible sign behind Ethan.
RIVER STORAGE COMPANY.
The letters rearranged into the clue Ethan wanted us to notice.
RIVER.
Nathaniel knew the place.
An old Holloway warehouse beside the river.
We went there with Daniel and Victor.
No army.
No dramatic convoy.
Nathaniel understood that Sebastian expected force.
So we gave him something else.
Documents.
Copies of the trust had already been delivered to three attorneys, a federal trustee, and an independent bank.
If Lily or Ethan disappeared permanently, the records would automatically become public.
Sebastian's leverage was dying.
We entered the warehouse.
Ethan sat at a table.
Sebastian Holloway stood behind him.
Silver hair.
Perfect suit.
Calm smile.
"Claire."
"Let my son go."
"Bring me Lily."
"No."
His smile faded.
"You don't understand what you're protecting."
"I understand enough."
Nathaniel stepped beside me.
"It's over, Sebastian."
Sebastian laughed softly.
"Nothing is over."
Daniel placed the original trust on the table.
Sebastian's eyes moved to it.
There.
Greed.
Finally visible.
"You want this?" Daniel asked.
"Very much."
"Release Ethan."
Sebastian nodded to one of his men.
Ethan stood.
He ran toward us.
Nathaniel pulled him behind him.
Sebastian reached for the trust.
Daniel smiled.
"It's a copy."
Sebastian froze.
"The original is already registered."
For the first time, Sebastian looked afraid.
Nathaniel stepped forward.
"You spent seven years hunting a document you couldn't destroy."
Sebastian's eyes shifted toward me.
"You think you've won?"
"No," I said. "I think my children are going home."
We left.
Nobody stopped us.
But Sebastian's final words followed me.
"Ask your husband why Lily was really excluded from the family."
That night, after the children were safe, I confronted Nathaniel.
"Tell me."
He stared at the floor.
"There's another document."
"What document?"
"A paternity amendment."
My heart began pounding.
"Nathaniel."
He looked at me.
"Lily's birth record was changed."
"Why?"
He opened his desk.
Inside was the missing DNA report.
He placed it in front of me.
I reached for it.
Nathaniel stopped my hand.
"Claire, before you read that, you need to know that whatever it says, Lily is my daughter."
I pulled the report free.
I opened it.
Then I saw the name listed under biological father.
May you like
It wasn't Nathaniel Holloway.
It was Daniel.
