Chapter 6 - The Last Lie

Adrian reached inside his jacket.

“Don’t,” Mason said.

His hands were empty.

Victor’s gun remained on the desk.

Elena stared.

“What is this?”

Victor looked exhausted.

“The truth.”

Mason stepped aside.

“I didn’t escape from him. He got me out before someone else could kill me.”

“Who?”

Victor pushed the gun away.

“Salvatore.”

Adrian’s face hardened.

“My father?”

“He has been hunting Mason since he returned.”

“Why?”

“Because Mason saw Rose die.”

Elena looked at Mason.

“You said you didn’t know who killed her.”

“I lied because I thought telling you would get you killed.”

“Enough protection through lies.”

Mason nodded.

“You’re right.”

Victor opened a folder.

Inside was the missing portion of the warehouse footage.

Rose argued with Richard.

Mason stood near the door.

Then Salvatore entered.

Elena’s heart stopped.

The men fought.

Richard drew a gun.

Rose stepped between them.

The footage blurred.

A shot.

Rose fell.

Elena covered her mouth.

“Salvatore shot her?”

“No,” Mason said.

The footage continued.

Richard held the weapon.

Salvatore attacked him.

The camera angle changed.

Another person appeared.

Victor.

Elena looked at him.

“I arrived too late,” Victor said.

On screen, Richard fled.

Salvatore knelt beside Rose.

She was alive.

Barely.

Victor helped carry her out.

“She didn’t die there?”

“No.”

Victor’s eyes filled.

“She survived another six weeks.”

“Why didn’t she come to me?”

“Because Richard promised to kill you if she appeared.”

Elena’s tears came.

“She died believing she was protecting you.”

“What happened to Richard?”

“Salvatore found him.”

Mason answered this time.

“My father disappeared.”

“You think Salvatore killed him?”

“Yes.”

Adrian looked at Victor.

“Did he?”

“I never asked.”

Silence.

Then Adrian’s phone rang.

Salvatore.

Adrian answered.

“Where are you?”

His father said something.

Adrian’s expression changed.

“He has Rachel.”

Elena went cold.

Salvatore wanted the ledger.

And Mason.

Exchange at Pier Nine.

Midnight.

“No police,” Salvatore demanded.

Elena laughed when Adrian repeated it.

“We’re calling them.”

Mason stared.

“He’ll kill Rachel.”

“He might kill her anyway.”

Adrian nodded.

“Police.”

It was the first decision they made together without argument.

Federal agents became involved because the ledger documented interstate financial crimes.

They planned the exchange.

Elena insisted on going.

Adrian hated it.

But he didn’t order her not to.

At Pier Nine, rain covered the concrete.

Salvatore stood beneath warehouse lights.

Rachel sat in a chair nearby.

Unharmed.

Terrified.

Elena carried the ledger.

Mason walked beside her.

Adrian remained hidden with officers.

“You came,” Salvatore said.

“You kidnapped my friend.”

“I needed Mason.”

“For what?”

“To finish what our fathers started.”

Mason stepped forward.

“My father is dead.”

Salvatore smiled sadly.

“No.”

A figure emerged from the warehouse.

Richard Vale.

Older.

Thin.

Alive.

Mason staggered.

“Dad?”

Richard smiled.

“My disappointing son.”

Everything clicked.

Richard had orchestrated the threats.

The rent increases.

The break-in.

The photograph.

He needed the ledger destroyed.

Salvatore had not kidnapped Rachel to help Richard.

He had captured her because Richard had threatened Adrian.

Two old men were still fighting a war everyone else had inherited.

Elena raised the ledger.

“This ends tonight.”

Richard laughed.

“You think paper ends anything?”

“No.”

She dropped it.

Police lights exploded across the pier.

Richard reached for a gun.

Salvatore moved first.

Not to shoot.

To block him.

The gun fired.

Salvatore fell.

Agents swarmed.

Richard was arrested.

Rachel was freed.

Mason surrendered.

Adrian ran to his father.

Salvatore survived.

The bullet struck his shoulder.

At the hospital, father and son spoke privately for hours.

Elena waited with Rachel.

At dawn, Adrian emerged.

“He’s going to cooperate.”

“With federal investigators?”

“Yes.”

“All of it?”

“All of it.”

The Moretti organization would change.

Businesses would be audited.

Criminal operations dismantled.

People would face consequences.

Including Salvatore.

Including Victor, if evidence implicated him.

Adrian had chosen not to protect the family name.

He had chosen the truth.

Weeks passed.

Mason accepted a plea agreement for fraud, conspiracy, harassment, and his role in concealing evidence.

Before sentencing, he asked Elena to visit.

She almost refused.

Then she went.

“I’m sorry,” Mason said.

“I know.”

“I did love you.”

“I know that too.”

He looked surprised.

“Love doesn’t erase what you did,” she said. “And what you did doesn’t require me to pretend every moment was fake. Both can be true.”

Mason cried.

Elena didn’t.

She had finished crying for him years earlier.

When she left, she felt lighter.

Golden Hearth reopened fully six weeks later.

Elena used Rose’s trust to purchase the building.

No landlord could threaten her again.

Adrian invested nothing.

At Elena’s insistence.

Instead, he became her most irritating regular customer.

One evening after closing, he sat across from her.

Same almond cake.

Same quiet gaze.

“What?” Elena asked.

“I have something.”

He placed a small envelope on the table.

Inside was a legal document.

A deed.

Elena frowned.

“This is for the vacant building next door.”

“Yes.”

“Why are you giving me this?”

“I’m not.”

She narrowed her eyes.

“It belongs to a nonprofit.”

“What nonprofit?”

“The Rose Brooks Foundation.”

Elena stopped breathing.

Adrian continued.

“It would provide commercial kitchens and small-business grants for women rebuilding after financial abuse.”

Her eyes filled.

“You did this?”

“No. You did.”

“What?”

“You mentioned the idea three weeks ago.”

“I was talking.”

“I listened.”

She stared at him.

Then someone knocked on the bakery door.

Golden Hearth was closed.

Adrian stood.

Elena looked through the glass.

Nobody was there.

Only another white bakery box.

Her stomach tightened.

Not again.

Adrian brought it inside.

There was no cake.

No threat.

Only a sealed letter.

Elena recognized the handwriting immediately.

Rose.

Her fingers trembled as she opened it.
