Chapter 9 - The Secret Danny Sold

Victor had not been after Chloe's baby alone.

He wanted a Moretti heir he could control.

Leo understood it immediately.

The stolen embryo could become leverage, confusion, or a competing succession claim.

“Find Isabella,” he ordered.

Marco did.

Her apartment was empty.

Her passport had been used two hours earlier at a private aviation terminal.

Destination unknown.

Chloe sat beside Amelia.

“Did Antonio know this could happen?”

“No.”

“Everyone keeps making plans for children who aren't even born.”

Amelia looked at her.

“That was the mistake we made with you.”

Chloe turned.

“We?”

“Your father. Antonio. Richard. Me. We kept deciding what future would be safest for you.”

“And forgot to ask what future I wanted.”

“Yes.”

Amelia took her hand.

“Don't repeat that with your daughter.”

Chloe looked toward Leo.

He was speaking with Marco.

Power seemed natural around him.

Commands became actions.

Problems became names on screens.

But when he noticed Chloe watching, he stopped mid-sentence.

Came to her.

“What?”

“We need to change the agreement.”

“Done.”

“You haven't heard what I want.”

“Doesn't matter.”

“It should.”

Leo crouched.

“Chloe, I haven't wanted that contract for months.”

Her pulse changed.

“What do you want?”

He almost answered.

Danny entered.

Pale but walking.

“Sorry.”

Chloe groaned.

“Your timing is terrible.”

“I get that a lot.”

His smile disappeared.

“I need to confess something.”

Leo stood.

Danny placed a phone on the table.

“I gave Victor information.”

Chloe stared.

“What?”

“Not about the baby.”

“What information?”

“About the Moretti trust.”

Leo became motionless.

Danny continued.

“When I was searching for Mom, Victor offered information in exchange for Antonio's old financial records.”

“You trusted him?”

“No. I thought I could feed him fake documents.”

“Could you?”

Danny looked ashamed.

“Mostly.”

“Mostly?”

“One document was real.”

He opened the phone.

A scanned letter.

Antonio's handwriting.

It described the hidden harbor evidence.

And a vault.

“Where?” Leo asked.

Danny looked at Chloe.

“Under Leo's old casino.”

Leo swore.

They drove into Manhattan before midnight.

The casino had closed after Antonio's death.

Beneath the main floor, behind an old wine cellar, they found a steel door.

Daniel's key opened it.

Inside were boxes.

Records.

Ledgers.

Photographs.

Enough evidence to destroy Victor's claims.

Then Chloe found a small wooden box.

Her name was carved into the lid.

Inside was a letter from Antonio.

Chloe,

If you're reading this, I failed to live long enough to tell you myself.

Your mother saved my life.

Not metaphorically. Literally.

In 1998, Victor ordered my death after I discovered his theft. Amelia warned me. She lost her home, her marriage and eventually her children because she refused to let innocent people pay for his crimes.

I could never repay that debt.

So I protected you.

Not because you were mine.

Because Amelia deserved to know someone would protect her daughter if she could not.

Chloe cried quietly.

Leo read beside her.

The letter continued.

If you and Leo ever find one another, do not let contracts or families decide what that means.

Leo stopped reading.

Chloe looked at him.

“Your father knew you.”

“He thought he did.”

“He knew enough.”

Then Danny called from another section.

“Guys.”

They found him staring at a wall.

Photographs covered it.

Salerno.

Richard.

Bradley.

Amelia.

Daniel.

Isabella.

A network Antonio had tracked for years.

One photograph was recent.

Too recent.

Taken after Antonio supposedly died.

Leo removed it.

Antonio Moretti stood outside a train station.

The timestamp was six weeks ago.

Chloe stared at Leo.

“Your father?”

Leo looked like someone had struck him.

“He's alive.”

Then a phone began ringing inside the vault.

An old landline.

No one moved.

It rang again.

Leo lifted the receiver.

A voice spoke.

May you like

Leo's face lost all color.

“Dad?”
