Chapter 6 - The Empire Falls at Noon

Adrian’s accusation shattered the room.

Elena denied everything.

Adrian produced records.

Elena produced counter-records.

Nora refused to choose sides without evidence.

That saved them.

Because both stories were partly true.

Elena had moved money secretly.

But she had done so under Vittorio’s instructions.

Adrian had worked with Arden Strategic.

But he had been tracing its transactions.

Someone had manipulated both.

Nora built a timeline.

Luca watched her cover an entire conference wall with dates, photographs, transfers, and names.

Then she stopped.

“Celeste isn’t the architect.”

Luca frowned.

“She benefits.”

“Yes. But she doesn’t have access to all these systems.”

“Who does?”

“Someone above Adrian.”

“There is nobody above Adrian except me.”

Nora turned.

“And the board chairman.”

Luca went still.

Dominic Moretti.

Vittorio’s younger brother.

Luca’s great-uncle.

The man who had kissed Nora’s cheek at the wedding and called her “family.”

Dominic had spent thirty years waiting behind Vittorio.

When Vittorio chose Luca as successor, Dominic smiled publicly.

Privately, he began preparing.

Samuel discovered the first scheme.

Dominic arranged the intimidation that preceded his death.

There was no proof he directly killed Samuel.

But there was proof he paid the men who followed him.

Vittorio discovered the truth too late.

That was why he constructed the marriage trust.

Not because Nora was convenient.

Because Samuel’s daughter possessed the one combination Dominic could not control.

Knowledge.

Independence.

And no loyalty to Moretti family politics.

At noon, the board assembled.

Dominic sat at the head of the table.

Celeste attended as representative of Arden Capital.

Nora entered beside Luca.

Whispers followed her.

Just like the wedding.

This time she did not lower her eyes.

Dominic smiled.

“Nora. This is a corporate meeting.”

“She’s a controlling trustee,” Luca said.

Dominic’s smile vanished.

The battle lasted ninety minutes.

Lawyers argued.

Votes were challenged.

Documents appeared.

Dominic accused Luca of incompetence.

Luca accused Dominic of fraud.

Then Nora stood.

She presented Samuel’s evidence.

Vittorio’s ledger.

The hidden trust.

The fraudulent authorizations.

Finally, the payment records linking Dominic to the security firm that had followed her father.

Dominic’s face changed.

“You have no idea what you’re doing.”

Nora looked directly at him.

“I’ve heard versions of that sentence my entire life.”

“Nora,” Luca warned softly.

She continued.

“Too emotional. Too ordinary. Too heavy. Too inexperienced.”

Celeste looked away.

Nora placed the final document on the table.

“But people make mistakes when they underestimate someone.”

Federal investigators entered three minutes later.

Dominic ran.

He made it to the elevator.

Marco stopped him.

Celeste began crying.

Her involvement was substantial but secondary.

She had known about the hostile takeover.

She had believed Luca would eventually lose control and return to her.

She had fed Dominic information.

She had helped humiliate Nora.

But she had not known about Samuel.

For Luca, that distinction mattered legally.

Not personally.

By sunset, Dominic was in federal custody.

The emergency board vote was canceled.

Moretti Continental survived.

Nora should have felt relief.

Instead, she packed.

Luca found her in the bedroom.

“What are you doing?”

“Leaving.”

His face changed.

“Why?”

“The crisis is over.”

“Our marriage isn’t.”

“It was created for the crisis.”

“That isn’t true anymore.”

Nora stopped folding.

“For you?”

“Yes.”

“Luca.”

“I love you.”

The words came out before he planned them.

Nora stared.

He stepped closer.

“I know how ridiculous that sounds.”

“Very.”

“I know.”

“You publicly announced you didn’t want me six days ago.”

“I was an idiot six days ago.”

“You were an idiot yesterday.”

“Progress is uneven.”

She laughed despite herself.

Then her expression softened.

“I need time.”

He nodded.

That hurt.

But he nodded.

“I’ll give you whatever you need.”

Nora left.

Three hours later, Luca received a call.

Dominic Moretti had escaped federal transport.

A guard had been injured.

A vehicle was stolen.

Luca’s first thought was Nora.

He called.

No answer.

Again.

Nothing.

Then a message arrived from her phone.

A photograph showed Nora’s abandoned car.

The driver’s door was open.

Her glasses lay broken on the pavement.

Under the photograph were five words.

BRING VITTORIO’S ORIGINAL LEDGER. ALONE.
