Chapter 5 - The Price of Betrayal

The threatening message changed the investigation.
Brynn Hollowell was no longer treated only as a missing financial suspect. Police began searching for her as a potential threat to Celeste and Ivy.
The lake house became a guarded property.
Two officers remained near the road. Private security watched the shoreline and monitored every entrance. Rosa closed curtains that had remained open for decades.
Celeste hated the darkness.
She hated feeling afraid inside the house where her father had once made her feel safest.
Most of all, she hated that Ivy’s first days of life were being shaped by the consequences of adults who valued money more than family.
Detective Cole arrived shortly after sunrise.
“We traced the message through a temporary number,” she said. “It was routed through several services, but the photograph is real. Hospital security footage shows Brynn entering the maternity floor using a visitor badge.”
Celeste’s stomach tightened.
“When?”
“Two nights after Ivy was born.”
“That was one of the nights Wade didn’t visit.”
Cole nodded.
“Brynn stayed approximately eleven minutes.”
“Did she enter my room?”
“We don’t know. Cameras cover the hallway but not patient rooms.”
Celeste remembered waking that night to find the door partly open. She had assumed a nurse had checked on Ivy.
“What does she want?”
“Control. Protection. Money. Possibly all three.”
Arthur placed a folder on the coffee table.
“We found a connection between Brynn and Wade’s former business partner.”
Celeste frowned.
“Grant Mercer?”
Grant had worked with Wade during the early expansion of Carrington Development Group. He was dismissed four years earlier after submitting fraudulent expenses.
“Brynn is his half sister,” Arthur said.
Celeste stared at him.
“Wade knew?”
“He claims he did not.”
“That seems impossible.”
“They use different surnames. Their mother remarried when Brynn was young.”
Arthur explained that Grant Mercer had attempted to purchase distressed shares in the company years earlier. Celeste’s father blocked the deal. After Samuel died, Grant sued, claiming he had been unfairly removed.
The case failed.
Now it appeared Grant had sent Brynn into the company under the appearance of a successful independent consultant.
“She targeted Wade,” Celeste said.
“His ego made him easy to target,” Arthur replied.
The truth did not excuse Wade.
But it explained why Brynn had praised him so aggressively, encouraged his resentment toward Celeste, and convinced him that the company should belong to him.
She had offered the exact fantasy he wanted to believe.
Wade arrived at the lake house that afternoon under police escort.
Celeste had not invited him.
Detective Cole had.
He entered the library looking older than he had two days earlier. His expensive clothes were wrinkled. He had not shaved. Without the mansion, the car, and the title, Wade seemed smaller.
His gaze moved immediately toward Ivy, who slept in Rosa’s arms.
“Is she okay?”
Celeste stood between him and the baby.
“She is safe.”
“I would never hurt her.”
“You threw her out of her home.”
Pain crossed his face.
“I know.”
“No, Wade. You know the words. I don’t think you understand what they mean.”
He lowered his eyes.
Detective Cole asked everyone to sit.
“Mr. Carrington has agreed to assist in contacting Brynn.”
Celeste looked at Wade.
“How?”
“She called me this morning.”
“Why didn’t anyone tell me?”
“We needed to verify the call,” Cole said. “Brynn wants corporate immunity and five million dollars.”
Arthur gave a cold laugh.
“She is in no position to negotiate immunity.”
“She says she has evidence implicating Grant Mercer, Lorraine Carrington, and several company vendors. She also claims she can prove Wade did not know about the insurance policy.”
Celeste studied Wade.
“Did she threaten Ivy?”
Wade’s jaw tightened.
“Yes.”
“What exactly did she say?”
“She said accidents happen when mothers refuse to cooperate.”
Celeste rose so quickly pain tore through her abdomen.
Arthur caught her arm.
Wade stood too.
“I told her I would get the money.”
“You promised her my money?”
“I was trying to keep her talking.”
“You do not make decisions involving Ivy.”
“I know.”
“Stop saying that!”
The force of Celeste’s voice startled Ivy awake.
Her cry filled the room.
Celeste immediately went to her.
Rosa placed the baby in her arms.
Celeste held Ivy close, fighting tears.
Wade watched from across the room.
He had seen Celeste pregnant. He had felt Ivy move once beneath his palm. But he had never truly understood the physical devotion between mother and child.
Now he saw it clearly.
Celeste was exhausted, injured, and terrified.
Yet every movement centered on protecting Ivy.
Wade had centered every movement on protecting himself.
“I’m sorry,” he whispered.
Celeste looked at him.
“Your apology cannot undo what happened.”
“I know.”
This time the words held no defense.
Detective Cole explained the plan. Wade would contact Brynn and arrange a meeting at an unfinished development site outside the city. Police would monitor the exchange.
Brynn demanded that Celeste attend.
“No,” Arthur said immediately.
Cole agreed. “We will not expose her.”
But Celeste looked at the map.
“If Brynn doesn’t see me, she may disappear.”
“She may be armed,” Wade said.
“You lost the right to protect me when you left me alone in the hospital.”
His face tightened, but he accepted the statement.
The meeting was arranged for the following evening.
Celeste would not be present. Instead, an undercover officer resembling her from a distance would sit inside a vehicle while Wade delivered a case containing fake financial documents and a tracking device.
For several hours, the plan worked.
Brynn arrived wearing a baseball cap and dark jacket. She approached Wade beneath the skeletal frame of an unfinished model home.
Police listened through the microphone hidden beneath his collar.
“You look terrible,” Brynn said.
“You threatened my daughter.”
“Our daughter now matters to you?”
“She was always my daughter.”
“You ordered her out.”
Wade flinched.
Brynn smiled.
“I only helped you become honest.”
“You used me.”
“You wanted to be used. You wanted someone to tell you that you earned everything.”
Wade held up the case.
“You’ll get the money after you give me the files.”
Brynn glanced toward the distant vehicle.
“Celeste stays where I can see her.”
“She just had surgery.”
“She should have thought about that before sending auditors after me.”
Wade’s hand curled into a fist.
“Give me the evidence.”
Brynn produced a flash drive.
“This connects Grant to the shell companies. It also proves your mother paid for the sedative.”
“Did Lorraine know what it could do?”
“She knew enough.”
“Did you intend to kill Celeste?”
Brynn’s smile vanished.
“No. A dead shareholder creates complications. A frightened, medically fragile wife signing control to her husband was more useful.”
Wade looked sick.
“You planned to make me pressure her.”
“You were already doing that.”
Officers received enough evidence to move in.
But before they could, a gunshot echoed across the construction site.
The undercover officer’s vehicle window shattered.
Brynn ran.
Wade dropped behind a concrete barrier as police shouted commands.
A second shooter fired from a neighboring building.
Grant Mercer had been watching the meeting.
Officers pursued Brynn while a tactical unit entered the structure.
Wade saw the flash drive lying exposed in the dirt.
Despite commands to remain down, he crawled toward it.
Another shot struck the concrete beside his hand.
He grabbed the drive and rolled behind cover.
Brynn reached a parked SUV.
Before she could enter, Detective Cole tackled her. Officers secured her hands and recovered a handgun from beneath the vehicle.
Across the site, Grant attempted to flee through an unfinished stairwell. Police arrested him after a short pursuit.
Wade remained on the ground, gripping the flash drive.
When the danger passed, an officer pulled him upright.
“You could have been killed.”
Wade looked at the small piece of plastic in his palm.
“I know.”
The drive contained enough evidence to expose the scheme.
Grant had financed Brynn’s consulting firm and directed her to gain access to company systems. Brynn seduced Wade after recognizing his resentment toward Celeste.
Lorraine became involved willingly.
She believed Brynn could help Wade gain permanent control of the company. Lorraine provided the sedative, expecting Celeste to become ill enough that Wade could present temporary management documents for her signature.
The emergency C-section disrupted their timing.
When Celeste survived and returned home early, the plan collapsed.
Brynn then attempted to move money and destroy evidence.
The photograph of Ivy had been intended to frighten Celeste, not document an immediate kidnapping plan. But the threat remained criminal.
Brynn and Grant were taken into custody.
Lorraine was arrested later that evening on charges related to evidence destruction, fraud, and the unlawful distribution of medication.
Wade was not arrested.
His cooperation and the evidence supported his claim that he had not known about the sedative or insurance policy.
But he still faced potential charges for unauthorized financial transactions and digital impersonation.
The following morning, he returned to the lake house under no illusion that Celeste would forgive him.
Arthur met him at the door.
“What do you want?”
“To see Celeste.”
“She is resting.”
“I brought something.”
Wade handed Arthur the keys to the vintage watch Celeste had given him and documents transferring his remaining consulting interest to repay part of the company losses.
“It isn’t enough,” Arthur said.
“I know.”
Arthur studied him.
“You say that often now.”
“Because I spent years believing I knew everything.”
Celeste appeared at the end of the hallway.
She had heard them.
Wade looked at her.
“I signed the settlement Arthur prepared.”
She approached slowly.
“You haven’t read the final divorce terms.”
“I’ll sign those too.”
“You should have your attorney review them.”
“I will.”
Celeste looked at the transfer documents.
“Why are you doing this?”
“Because the money was never mine.”
“That realization came quickly.”
“No.” Wade’s eyes filled with shame. “It came seven years too late.”
He looked toward the room where Ivy slept.
“I don’t expect you to forgive me. But I want to support her. Not as leverage. Not as a way back into your life.”
Celeste remained silent.
“You may request supervised visits through the court,” she finally said. “Whether those visits continue will depend on your behavior.”
Wade nodded.
“Thank you.”
“This is not forgiveness.”
“I understand.”
He turned toward the door.
“Wade.”
He stopped.
Celeste held his gaze.
“The greatest thing you took from me was not money. It was the belief that the person beside me would protect me when I was vulnerable.”
His eyes reddened.
“I know I can’t return that.”
“No. You can’t.”
He left without asking her to change her mind.
Celeste watched him walk down the drive carrying one suitcase.
For the first time since their marriage began, Wade owned only what he could carry.
And Celeste finally possessed something more valuable than the mansion, the car, or the company.
May you like
She possessed the truth.
