Chapter 6 - The Night Adrian's Empire Collapsed

By morning, my name was attached to forty-three million dollars I had never touched.

Adrian had planned it well.

Mercer Strategic Holdings had moved funds through three intermediary accounts before depositing them into a shell corporation created using copies of my identification.

The company was called N.C. Holdings.

My initials.

A federal investigator looking quickly would see exactly what Adrian wanted them to see.

Norah Costello.

Wife of Dante Costello.

Millions transferred.

The story wrote itself.

Dante wanted to make the problem disappear.

Legally, he said.

His lawyers could freeze the accounts.

His accountants could trace the transfers.

His security team could locate Adrian.

But I had spent too much of my life letting powerful men decide what happened around me.

This time, I wanted a seat at the table.

Detective Alvarez agreed.

The FBI became involved because the transfers crossed state lines.

Dante cooperated.

That surprised some people.

It did not surprise me.

At noon, we learned Gabriel Mercer had secretly contacted federal authorities two weeks earlier.

He had been trying to expose Adrian.

That was why Adrian took him.

Gabriel had spent decades hiding because he believed remnants of Angelo Costello's organization still wanted him dead.

He had resurfaced when Evelyn died.

Then discovered his son had built an investment company partly through fraud.

Adrian had forged documents.

Stolen client funds.

Blackmailed former employees.

And spent years building the public image of a brilliant financier.

His empire was already cracked.

All we had to do was stop him from using me to hold it together.

Dante's financial team traced the transfer.

The money had not truly entered an account I controlled.

It was staged.

A temporary routing path designed to create records before the funds moved offshore.

At 4:30 p.m., federal agents froze everything.

Adrian didn't know that yet.

That mattered.

He contacted Dante at six.

Audio only.

“Midnight.”

Dante said, “I want proof Gabriel is alive.”

A pause.

Then an older man's voice.

“Don't give him anything.”

A strike sounded.

I flinched.

Dante's hand tightened.

Adrian came back.

“He has always preferred strangers to family.”

Dante kept him talking.

“Where is Silverline supposed to go?”

“I'll send instructions.”

“You don't understand Silverline.”

“I understand enough.”

“No,” Dante said. “You don't.”

That was the bait.

Adrian took it.

“What don't I understand?”

“The accounts don't belong to me.”

Silence.

“They belong to protected beneficiaries.”

“You're lying.”

“Some are still alive.”

Another pause.

Adrian had spent years believing Silverline was Costello money.

It wasn't.

It never had been.

It had been money Isabella, Gabriel, Evelyn, and Victor moved away from Angelo.

Funds meant for witnesses.

Families.

People escaping control.

Adrian's entire revenge was built around a fortune he believed had been stolen from his father.

In reality, Gabriel had helped create it.

“Ask him,” Dante said.

We heard movement.

Then Gabriel's voice.

“He's telling the truth.”

Adrian screamed something away from the phone.

The call ended.

That was the first time I understood how fragile Adrian had become.

His certainty was collapsing.

And certainty had always been his favorite weapon.

At 8:15, instructions arrived.

Dante was to go alone to an abandoned printing warehouse near the river.

Bring an encrypted drive containing Silverline access credentials.

No police.

No security.

Of course law enforcement rejected the terms.

Dante still intended to go.

We argued.

“No.”

“Norah.”

“No.”

“He has Gabriel.”

“And he wants you.”

“He wants the drive.”

“He wants someone to blame.”

Dante looked at me.

“You're not coming.”

“I'm not asking to.”

That surprised him.

“I am asking you not to behave like the version of yourself everyone expects.”

“What does that mean?”

“The feared boss. The man who walks into a warehouse alone because he thinks everyone else is safer behind him.”

His expression changed.

“What do you want me to do?”

“Trust people.”

He almost smiled.

“That's your solution?”

“Yes.”

For Dante Costello, it was probably the most difficult one.

At 10:42 p.m., the operation began.

Federal agents positioned around the warehouse.

Dante wore a transmitter.

The drive he carried contained no access credentials.

Only copies of Silverline's historical records.

Proof.

I stayed in a command vehicle three blocks away with Isabella.

She had insisted on coming.

Neither of us spoke much.

At 11:07, Dante entered the warehouse.

We heard everything through his microphone.

Footsteps.

Metal echo.

Then Adrian.

“You came.”

“You expected me.”

“Drive.”

“Gabriel first.”

“Still giving orders.”

“Still wasting time.”

Adrian laughed.

Then Gabriel spoke weakly.

“Dante.”

“I'm here.”

I gripped the edge of my seat.

Agents watched thermal images.

Three people inside.

Dante.

Adrian.

Gabriel.

One unknown heat source on the upper floor.

“Fourth person,” an agent whispered.

My heart pounded.

Dante didn't know.

Or maybe he did.

Adrian demanded the drive.

Dante placed it on a table.

“Everything you want is there.”

Adrian picked it up.

“What password?”

“Evelyn.”

Silence.

That name hurt him.

Good.

He entered it.

Files opened.

We heard his breathing change.

“These aren't accounts.”

“They're records.”

“You lied.”

“No. You did.”

Adrian's voice hardened.

“Careful.”

“Your father didn't abandon you for my family.”

Silence.

“He was protecting you from Angelo.”

“Shut up.”

“Your mother knew.”

“Shut up.”

“Evelyn took money because she was protecting witnesses.”

“SHUT UP.”

The sound echoed through our speakers.

Dante continued.

“You built your whole life around being abandoned.”

Adrian's breathing was ragged.

“But nobody stole your father.”

Then Gabriel spoke.

“I left because I was afraid.”

Adrian went quiet.

Gabriel continued.

“I thought if Angelo knew you were my son, he'd use you.”

“You never came back.”

“I should have.”

“You never called.”

“I was a coward.”

The pain in Adrian's voice changed.

For one second, he sounded like a boy.

Then the fourth heat source moved.

An agent shouted.

“Upper floor moving!”

A gunshot cracked through the audio.

I screamed Dante's name.

Chaos.

Agents entered.

More shouting.

Then static.

For nine seconds, I heard nothing.

Nine seconds can be a lifetime.

Then Dante's voice came through.

“I'm fine.”

My knees nearly gave out.

The shooter was Lucas Kern's brother.

He had fired from the catwalk.

The bullet missed Dante.

Federal agents arrested him.

Adrian attempted to run through a loading door.

He made it thirty yards.

Police took him into custody without further violence.

Gabriel survived.

At 12:03 a.m., the man who had spent years pretending to own every room he entered was placed in the back of a federal vehicle.

His empire did not burn in flames.

It burned in records.

Bank statements.

Forged signatures.

Witness testimony.

Security footage.

Fraud reports.

Every lie surfaced.

Every hidden account froze.

Every employee he had threatened suddenly had somewhere safe to speak.

By sunrise, Mercer Strategic Holdings was effectively finished.

I thought that was the end.

Then Detective Alvarez came to us at the hospital where Gabriel was being examined.

Her expression told me otherwise.

“We found something in Adrian's warehouse.”

“What?”

“A file.”

She handed Dante a sealed evidence copy.

His father's handwriting appeared across the front.

ANGELO COSTELLO — SUCCESSION.

Dante opened it.

Inside was one page.

A list of names.

At the bottom was his own.

Beside it, Angelo had written:

IF DANTE REFUSES THE FAMILY BUSINESS, THE CHILD WILL RESTORE THE BLOODLINE.

I instinctively covered my stomach.

Dante stared at the words.

Then Alvarez pulled out a second page.

This one was newer.

Printed less than a week ago.

Someone had circled the word CHILD.

Beneath it was written:

May you like

THE COSTELLO HEIR HAS ALREADY BEEN FOUND.

And whoever had written it was still free.
