Chapter 7 - The Locked Room

Vadim didn't deny it.

"Catherine."

Elara felt the floor disappear beneath her.

"What?"

"I met your mother once."

Gerald smiled.

Vadim ignored him.

"Eleven years ago."

"Why didn't you tell me?"

"Because I didn't know she was your mother until I saw the recording."

Elara stared.

Vadim explained.

Catherine had approached him through an intermediary shortly before her death.

She knew Gerald was collecting leverage on criminal organizations.

She gave Vadim evidence that protected several people.

In return, she asked him to keep a ring.

"If her daughter ever came into your life," Catherine had said, "give it to her."

Vadim had assumed it was symbolic.

When Patrick proposed the marriage years later, Vadim hadn't connected the names.

Fagan was common enough.

Then he'd seen Catherine's recording.

"Why keep this from me afterward?"

"I wanted to understand what the ring contained first."

Elara's disappointment hurt more than anger.

"You should have told me."

"Yes."

Gerald applauded.

"Beautiful. Even the honorable monster lies."

Vadim looked at Elara.

"I was wrong."

No excuse.

No defense.

Just the admission.

Gerald's smile faded.

Elara examined the engraving.

Eight digits.

A password.

Gerald demanded it.

She refused.

He reached toward her.

Vadim moved.

Gerald's hidden men emerged.

But Vadim had anticipated them.

Police officers loyal to Catherine's original investigation entered from both sides.

Margaret had contacted federal investigators using evidence from the archive.

Gerald was arrested again—this time beyond the reach of the local network he'd corrupted.

The documents were recovered.

Yet Elara wasn't celebrating.

Back at Vadim's estate, she entered her bedroom and closed the door.

Vadim didn't follow.

Hours passed.

Finally, Elara opened it.

He was sitting on the floor across the hallway.

The feared Vadim Sokolov.

On the floor.

Waiting.

"What are you doing?"

"Waiting."

"For what?"

"You."

She leaned against the doorway.

"You could've knocked."

"You needed space."

She sat opposite him.

"Why are you so patient with me?"

"I'm not."

"You are."

Vadim thought about it.

"Because everyone else rushed you."

That almost broke her.

She looked down at the ring.

"I don't know if I can trust you."

"I understand."

"I want to."

He said nothing.

"That's the annoying part."

A small smile touched his mouth.

Elara moved closer.

"I need one promise."

"Name it."

"No more protecting me with secrets."

Vadim nodded.

"Agreed."

"Even if the truth hurts."

"Especially then."

She put the ring back on.

Not because Catherine intended it.

Not because Patrick arranged the marriage.

Because Elara chose to.

Then she looked at him.

"Ask me again."

Vadim knew exactly what she meant.

His expression changed.

"May I kiss you?"

Her heart raced.

"Yes."

He moved slowly.

Elara closed her eyes.

Then someone pounded on the front door.

They both stopped.

She groaned.

Vadim actually laughed.

"Your timing is cursed."

"Apparently."

The knocking continued.

A guard appeared.

"Mr. Sokolov."

Vadim stood.

"What?"

"Patrick Fagan is here."

Elara followed him downstairs.

Patrick stood in the foyer.

He looked older than he had a week earlier.

He carried no entourage.

Only a folder.

"I came to sign everything over."

Elara stared.

"What?"

"My control of Catherine's trust. The companies. Everything."

"You can't undo what you did by signing papers."

"I know."

Patrick looked at his daughter.

"I don't expect forgiveness."

That was new.

He placed the folder down.

"I spent years telling myself I was protecting you. Eventually I realized I liked controlling you. Catherine saw it before I did."

Elara said nothing.

Patrick continued.

"I called you damaged because if you believed nobody else wanted you, you would stay where I could control you."

The admission hurt.

But it also freed something.

Patrick's cruelty had never been evidence about Elara.

It had always been evidence about Patrick.

"You were wrong," she said.

"I know."

"No. Say it."

Patrick looked confused.

"Say what you were wrong about."

His eyes filled.

"You weren't damaged."

Elara swallowed.

"You never were."

She nodded.

Patrick turned to leave.

Then he stopped.

"There's one more thing."

He handed her a small key.

Elara recognized it.

The hidden archive.

"No."

Patrick shook his head.

"Different room."

"Where?"

"Your mother's clinic."

Margaret went pale.

Patrick looked at her.

"You never found Catherine's last room, did you?"

Margaret stared.

"What last room?"

Patrick gave Elara the key.

"Catherine locked it herself three days before she died."

Elara looked down.

A label was attached.

ELARA.

That evening, she and Vadim returned to the clinic.

They found the door behind an old storage cabinet.

Elara inserted the key.

It turned.

The lock clicked.

She opened the door.

A video monitor turned on automatically.

Catherine appeared on screen.

She looked directly into the camera.

May you like

Then she said:

"Elara, if you're watching this with Vadim Sokolov, then something happened that even I didn't expect."
