Chapter 14 - The Day They Lost Everything

Ofelia sat at the opposite table.
Perfect hair.
Perfect suit.
Perfect expression.
She looked like nothing had happened.
Varela sat beside her.
Rodrigo sat with us.
For the first time, he wasn't hiding.
The judge entered.
The hearing began.
Varela presented the forged documents.
He claimed I had been unstable after childbirth.
He claimed Rodrigo had acted responsibly.
He claimed the family trust was being mismanaged.
Then Emilia stood.
She presented the bank records.
The hidden phone.
The forged signatures.
The false medical documents.
The recording.
The ledger.
The original trust.
One by one.
Varela objected.
Again.
Again.
Again.
But the evidence kept coming.
Then Emilia presented the bank-code discrepancy.
The document had been forged using a banking format that didn't exist at the time.
The judge asked:
“Who prepared this document?”
Varela said nothing.
Then Rodrigo stood.
“I know.”
Everyone turned.
He looked at me.
“I did.”
My heart stopped.
He continued.
“I helped prepare some of the original documents.”
Ofelia turned toward him.
“Rodrigo.”
He ignored her.
“I was afraid of my mother.”
The judge asked:
“Are you saying these documents were fraudulent?”
“Yes.”
Varela stood.
“This is ridiculous.”
Rodrigo looked at him.
“You told me she would sign.”
Silence.
“You told me she wouldn't notice.”
Varela's face changed.
Rodrigo continued.
“You told me once the baby was born, she would be too exhausted to fight.”
The courtroom went silent.
Ofelia stood.
“You ungrateful—”
The judge struck the desk.
“Sit down.”
Ofelia sat.
Then Lucía testified.
She explained the original family structure.
The stolen assets.
The hidden company.
The payments.
The years of manipulation.
Finally, Emilia submitted the original trust.
The judge read it.
Then looked at Varela.
“This document appears valid.”
“It is.”
“Then the emergency guardianship petition has no basis.”
The judge turned to me.
“Mrs. Salgado, do you wish to make a statement?”
I stood.
My hands shook.
But my voice didn't.
“I don't want revenge.”
Rodrigo looked at me.
“I want my daughter protected.”
The judge nodded.
“And the house?”
I looked at Emilia.
She handed over the trust documents.
“The house was never Rodrigo's.”
I said it clearly.
“It belonged to my father's trust.”
The judge confirmed it.
“Then ownership remains with the trust beneficiary.”
Me.
The ruling came that afternoon.
The guardianship petition was denied.
The fraudulent documents were referred for investigation.
Varela was detained pending further proceedings.
Ofelia's assets were frozen.
The companies connected to the scheme were placed under review.
Rodrigo was not imprisoned that day.
But he lost control of the company.
And he lost access to my accounts.
I returned home with Renata.
The house was quiet.
Different.
Safe.
Rodrigo stood outside.
He didn't come inside.
“I won't ask you to forgive me.”
I looked at him.
“Good.”
“I want to see my daughter.”
“You can ask through Emilia.”
He nodded.
“I understand.”
He walked away.
For a moment, I felt sadness.
Not for the man he had become.
For the man I had believed he was.
That night, I put Renata in her crib.
She opened her eyes.
I smiled.
“You're safe.”
My phone buzzed.
A message from Gabriel.
Your father left one final file.
I frowned.
Another message appeared.
You should read it alone.
I opened the attachment.
It was a letter.
My father's handwriting.
Mariana,
If you've reached this point, then you survived what I feared most.
I wish I could have protected you myself.
But I knew one day you would have to protect yourself.
I cried.
The final line said:
Never confuse peace with surrender.
I pressed the letter against my chest.
Then another message appeared.
This one from an unknown number.
Your father wasn't the only one who knew.
I froze.
A second message arrived.
There is still one person who has never testified.
I looked at the screen.
The name appeared beneath it.
Sofia Méndez.
May you like
But Sofia had been dead for three years.
Unless...
