Chapter 10 - The Night Ethan Finally Chose Her

The signature was excellent.

But it was false.

Ethan knew immediately.

The board did not.

Neither did federal investigators.

Eleanor was placed on administrative leave.

Reporters gathered outside Hale Orbital.

Headlines appeared within hours.

STRATEGIST LINKED TO HORIZON ESPIONAGE.

Ethan called an emergency board meeting.

Charles demanded Eleanor's termination.

Ethan refused.

“You are risking the company.”

“No. I'm refusing to convict someone before evidence does.”

“You cannot know she's innocent.”

Ethan looked at him.

“Yes, I can.”

“How?”

“Because I trust her.”

The room became silent.

Three years earlier those words would have terrified Ethan.

Now they freed him.

He left the meeting and found Eleanor packing her office.

“What are you doing?”

“Protecting your company.”

“Stop protecting me.”

She stared.

“I mean it.”

“Ethan—”

“For twenty years everyone made decisions for us. My parents. Grant. Vanessa. Fear. Pride. I'm done.”

He took the box from her hands.

“You're not leaving.”

Her eyes filled.

“You don't know what this will cost.”

“I do.”

The investigation found microscopic inconsistencies in the signature.

Then Vanessa admitted Grant had forced her to practice Eleanor's signature from corporate filings.

She testified fully.

The contract collapsed as evidence.

Grant was charged with corporate espionage, extortion, assault, and multiple financial crimes.

Horizon survived.

Weeks later, the company held its annual innovation gala.

Eleanor wore a red silk dress.

Ethan saw her across the ballroom and forgot the conversation happening beside him.

Claire noticed.

“Go.”

“What?”

“You've been staring at her for forty seconds.”

“I have not.”

“Forty-three.”

Ethan walked away.

Eleanor slipped through glass doors onto the terrace.

Seattle glittered below.

Ethan joined her.

“Escaping?”

“Breathing.”

They stood side by side.

“You're leaving,” Ethan said.

She looked at him.

“How did you know?”

“Your contract ends Friday.”

“I accomplished what the board hired me to do.”

“You could stay.”

“Do you want your strategist to stay?”

“No.”

The answer surprised her.

Ethan turned.

“I want Eleanor to stay.”

Her breathing changed.

He had rehearsed speeches.

Every one vanished.

So he told the truth.

“I spent three years believing love was a weakness.”

She listened.

“I thought if I controlled enough things, nobody could hurt me again.”

“Ethan…”

“Then you walked into my boardroom and started telling me everything I was doing wrong.”

She laughed through sudden tears.

“And somehow that was worse?”

“Much.”

He stepped closer.

“I don't know when it happened.”

She went still.

“Maybe when you tore up Daniel's termination order. Maybe when you made me laugh. Maybe when I read your letter.”

His voice softened.

“Maybe some part of me started twenty years late.”

Eleanor's eyes glistened.

“I’m in love with you.”

The words existed between them.

He did not touch her.

“And even if you tell me this can never happen, thank you.”

“For what?”

“For making me feel alive again.”

Eleanor covered her mouth.

Tears spilled down her cheeks.

For one terrible second she said nothing.

Then she stepped closer.

“Ethan… I've been waiting twenty years to hear you say that.”

His face changed.

Hope.

Disbelief.

Pain for everything lost.

He reached for her hand.

Before their fingers touched, a waiter approached.

“Ms. Rowan?”

“Yes?”

“This was left for you.”

An old photograph.

Eleanor turned it over.

Her smile disappeared.

Written on the back was a date.

June 18, 2004.
