Chapter 5 - The Croft Corporation Secret

The woman who entered wasn't Elizabeth Bennett.
She was Elaine Mercer.
Arthur's chief operations officer.
Arthur lowered his gaze.
For a moment, Kalin saw something rare in him.
Embarrassment.
He had wanted a ghost to walk through the door.
Elaine looked around.
"What happened here?"
Nathan stopped her.
"How did you get onto this floor?"
"Arthur summoned me."
Everyone looked at Arthur.
"I did not."
Elaine frowned.
"My phone received your authorization."
Kalin extended her hand.
"Show me."
Elaine handed over the device.
The message looked authentic.
Arthur's private authentication code.
Same pattern.
Cloned identities.
Fabricated voices.
False instructions.
Someone wasn't merely stealing information.
They were making people appear responsible for actions they hadn't taken.
Kalin looked at the photograph of Elizabeth.
"Tell me about her."
Elaine saw it.
Her expression changed.
"Where did you find that?"
"Here."
Elaine looked at Arthur.
"You kept this?"
"Tell her."
Elaine hesitated.
"Elizabeth Bennett and Thomas Croft developed Lantern together."
Julian stared.
"My father?"
"Yes."
Arthur sat silently.
Elaine continued.
"They discovered vulnerabilities in the system. Route data could be accessed by senior executives without leaving conventional audit trails."
Kalin understood.
"Someone exploited it."
"For years."
"Who?"
"We never proved it."
Julian looked at his grandfather.
"My father knew?"
Arthur nodded.
"He was investigating."
"And Elizabeth?"
"Helping him."
Julian's face tightened.
"The accident."
Arthur closed his eyes.
"May not have been an accident."
The truth landed harder than shouting could have.
Julian walked away from them.
Kalin watched him place both hands against a shelf.
She remembered the young man she had married.
The man who almost never spoke about his father.
She felt sympathy.
It didn't restore love.
Both could be true.
Nathan examined the files.
"If Elizabeth died, how did Clara get into Croft?"
Elaine answered.
"Julian hired her."
Kalin looked at him.
Of course.
Clara hadn't infiltrated Croft through some elaborate conspiracy.
She had entered through Julian's ego.
"She approached you?" Kalin asked.
Julian nodded slowly.
"At a technology conference."
"When?"
"Eleven months ago."
"How quickly did the affair begin?"
He looked ashamed.
"Three months later."
Kalin absorbed the pain and pushed it aside.
"She targeted you."
Julian looked up.
"Probably."
"Don't sound relieved. You still made every choice."
"I know."
Again.
No excuse.
Kalin almost hated that more.
Nathan found a folder beneath the desk.
"Here."
Inside were copies of Thomas Croft's handwritten notes.
One sentence had been circled repeatedly.
LANTERN ISN'T LEAKING. SOMEONE BUILT A SECOND DOOR.
Kalin read it twice.
"A backdoor."
Elaine nodded.
"Elizabeth would have been capable of building one."
"Would she?"
Elaine hesitated.
"Yes."
"Would Thomas?"
"Yes."
"Arthur?"
"No."
Arthur looked offended.
"I'm eighty-one, not useless."
Kalin almost smiled.
Then she saw another page.
A list of initials.
E.B.
T.C.
M.V.
P.S.
Malcolm Voss.
Peter Shaw.
Kalin looked up.
"Where are Voss and Shaw?"
Elaine answered.
"Voss is at the company retreat outside Virginia."
"And Shaw?"
Nobody answered.
Arthur checked his phone.
"Peter hasn't been seen since yesterday."
Nathan called his team.
Kalin continued searching.
Behind one folder she found a small envelope.
Her name was written across it.
Not Keystone.
Kalin.
She opened it.
Inside was a note in Arthur's handwriting.
If you're reading this, I failed to tell you soon enough.
Kalin looked at him.
"You wrote this?"
Arthur nodded.
"When?"
"Two years ago."
She kept reading.
Thomas believed the person abusing Lantern was protected by someone inside the family. Elizabeth believed the same. Both died before they could prove it.
Kalin stopped.
"Inside the family."
Julian looked toward Arthur.
"Who?"
"I don't know."
Kalin turned the page.
There was one final line.
The answer is not in who accessed Lantern. The answer is in who benefited every time it failed.
Nathan looked at her.
"Contracts."
Kalin understood.
Every security failure created demand for more security.
Every compromised route damaged a competitor.
Every incident could shift corporate relationships.
"Follow the money."
Arthur nodded.
"That's what Thomas was doing."
Julian turned.
"And you never told me?"
"I was trying to keep you alive."
"You let me think my father died because he was careless."
"I let you hate him instead of becoming curious about his work."
Julian's eyes filled with something close to rage.
"You had no right."
"No."
Arthur's answer was immediate.
"I didn't."
Silence.
Kalin looked down at the papers.
For the first time, the Croft men were admitting things without excuses.
Too late for her marriage.
Maybe not too late for the truth.
Nathan's analyst called.
He put the phone on speaker.
"We traced the secondary transmission from the ambush."
"Source?" Nathan asked.
"Croft internal relay."
"We know."
"There's more. The relay wasn't activated from headquarters."
"Where?"
A pause.
"The Croft family residence."
Arthur's face hardened.
Julian stared at him.
Only a handful of people had access.
Kalin asked the obvious question.
"Who was home during the operation?"
Arthur answered.
"No one."
The analyst interrupted.
"That's not correct."
Everyone went quiet.
"We recovered a smart-security record that someone attempted to delete. One person entered the residence forty-three minutes before the route changed."
Nathan asked, "Identity?"
Another pause.
Then the analyst said:
"Clara Bennett."
Julian swore.
But the analyst wasn't finished.
"She wasn't alone."
Kalin felt the room tighten.
"Who was with her?"
"We've restored only one frame."
Nathan's phone received the image.
He opened it.
Kalin looked.
A man stood beside Clara.
Older.
Gray-haired.
She had seen him before.
Every Croft employee had.
Nathan enlarged the face.
Arthur whispered:
"Malcolm Voss."
Then Kalin's phone vibrated.
Unknown number.
One message.
YOU FOUND THE WRONG TRAITOR.
A second message arrived immediately.
LOOK BEHIND YOU.
May you like
Kalin turned.
The archive door was closing...
