Chapter 5 - The Signature in the Hospital File

“Elena,” Luciano said.

His sister was already moving.

“I’ll call the police.”

“No.”

Kate’s voice stopped everyone.

Luciano turned toward her.

She looked exhausted, but her eyes were clear.

“Why not?” he asked.

“Because Margaret finally told me what’s happening.”

Luciano looked at the older woman.

“Then she can tell all of us.”

Margaret closed the bedroom door.

“My legal name is Evelyn Margaret Mercer Hale.”

Adrian stared.

“You own Hawthorne Maternal Care?”

“No. Someone used my dormant professional corporation.”

“Who?”

“I’ve been trying to prove that for three months.”

Luciano’s patience thinned.

“Start at the beginning.”

Margaret nodded.

“Years ago, before I became an independent midwife, I registered a maternal-care company. It never became active. I closed the practice after my husband died. Three months ago I discovered someone had reactivated records using my old registration information.”

“Matteo?”

“I suspected him.”

“Why didn’t you report it?”

“I did.”

“To whom?”

“A financial crimes investigator.”

Luciano looked at Adrian.

Adrian shook his head. He knew nothing about it.

Margaret continued.

“I came to Kate because her name appeared in billing records connected to that false company.”

Kate held up the document.

“She showed me.”

Luciano took it.

There were payments for appointments Kate never attended.

Consultations that never occurred.

Authorizations she never signed.

Someone had created an alternate medical paper trail around Kate’s pregnancy.

Luciano looked at Margaret.

“Why?”

“I didn’t know until tonight.”

“What changed tonight?”

“The gestational dates.”

Luciano went still.

Margaret pointed toward one record.

“The false file lists Kate as twenty-six weeks pregnant.”

Kate frowned.

“But I’m twenty-nine.”

“Yes.”

Luciano understood.

“Three weeks.”

Margaret nodded.

“Someone wanted the official-looking records to make conception appear to have occurred after Luciano left Europe.”

Kate’s face drained.

“To make it look like the baby couldn’t be his.”

“Yes.”

The cruelty of it silenced the room.

The intercepted letters.

The blocked calls.

The false emails.

The divorce.

And now medical records designed to turn suspicion into evidence.

Luciano sat beside Kate.

This time she reached for his hand first.

“Someone wanted you to doubt me,” she whispered.

Luciano looked at her.

“They failed.”

Kate’s eyes searched his.

“You asked if the baby was yours.”

“I was shocked.”

“That isn’t the same as trust.”

“No.”

He did not defend himself.

“I hurt you.”

Kate looked away.

Luciano continued quietly.

“I can’t undo the question.”

“No.”

“But I can tell you what I know now.”

She looked back.

“I know who you are.”

Kate’s eyes filled.

“And?”

“And I know this child is mine because you told me it is.”

No test.

No document.

No calculation.

Just her word.

Kate lowered her eyes.

“Thank you.”

Adrian looked uncomfortable witnessing something so private.

Elena did not. She was openly crying.

Luciano glanced at her.

“Really?”

“I’m pregnant emotionally.”

“This family has enough pregnancies tonight.”

Kate laughed.

The laugh became a wince.

Margaret immediately checked her.

The tension returned.

“Another contraction?”

Kate nodded.

Margaret watched the time.

Too soon.

Luciano’s hand tightened around Kate’s.

“Talk to me,” he said.

“About what?”

“Anything.”

Kate breathed through the pain.

“You came here to divorce me.”

“Different subject.”

“You brought it.”

“Kate.”

“Distract me.”

Luciano understood.

“All right.”

He breathed with her.

She whispered, “Why?”

“Why what?”

“Why did you finally decide to do it?”

The contraction slowly eased.

But Luciano answered anyway.

“Because I thought you were waiting for me to let you go.”

Kate stared.

“I thought you hated being tied to my life.”

“I hated being alone inside it.”

The distinction landed between them.

Luciano nodded slowly.

“I know that now.”

“You were never home.”

“I know.”

“Every emergency became more important.”

“I know.”

“Every phone call interrupted dinner.”

“I know.”

“I started feeling like your wife only when nobody else needed you.”

Luciano looked down at their joined hands.

“I don’t have an argument.”

“I’m not asking for one.”

“I thought providing everything was the same as being there.”

“It wasn’t.”

“I know.”

Kate studied him.

“Why do you keep saying that?”

“Because tonight I’ve discovered I was wrong about almost everything.”

The honesty surprised her.

“Not everything.”

Luciano looked at her abdomen.

“No.”

A faint smile touched her face.

Then Adrian’s phone rang.

Everyone turned.

He looked at the screen.

“Matteo.”

Luciano held out his hand.

Adrian gave him the phone.

Luciano answered.

“Where are you?”

Matteo sounded calm.

“Luciano.”

“Where are you?”

“You always skip the pleasantries when you’re upset.”

“You stole Adrian’s car.”

A pause.

“Did I?”

“Come to Hawthorne Ridge.”

“That sounds unwise.”

“For you?”

“For everyone.”

Luciano’s eyes hardened.

“Stay away from my wife.”

Matteo sighed.

“There it is.”

“What?”

“The reason this became necessary.”

Kate listened.

Matteo continued.

“You disappeared into marriage, Luciano. You handed decision-making to outsiders. You weakened everything our fathers built.”

Luciano glanced at Kate.

“My wife has nothing to do with company control.”

“She has everything to do with it. Or rather, the child does.”

There it was.

Directly.

Finally.

Luciano switched the call to speaker.

Matteo continued without realizing Kate could hear.

“Your father designed the trust so badly that one biological heir changes the voting structure for all of us.”

Kate’s face hardened.

“You manipulated us for shares?”

Silence.

Matteo realized.

“Kate.”

“Don’t say my name.”

“I never wanted you hurt.”

“You let me believe my husband abandoned our child.”

“I needed time.”

“For what?”

“To correct an imbalance.”

Kate laughed bitterly.

“You mean steal.”

“Nothing was stolen.”

Adrian spoke.

“I have the transfer records.”

Matteo became quiet.

Then:

“Not anymore.”

Adrian looked toward the window.

The stolen flash drive.

Luciano said, “Copies exist.”

Matteo answered, “Do they?”

Luciano looked at Adrian.

Adrian’s expression revealed uncertainty.

Matteo laughed softly.

“You all trusted the wrong people.”

The call ended.

Luciano immediately turned to Adrian.

“Copies?”

Adrian hesitated.

“Some.”

“Some?”

“The drive contained the consolidated archive.”

Elena cursed under her breath.

Kate closed her eyes.

Luciano looked toward Margaret.

“What about your investigator?”

“I sent copies of my documents.”

“Enough to connect Matteo?”

“Not directly.”

Luciano walked toward the window.

For the first time, Matteo had admitted motive aloud.

But whether the call had been recorded—

Kate held up her phone.

Luciano turned.

She had activated voice recording.

A tiny waveform still moved across the screen.

Adrian stared.

“You recorded him?”

Kate stopped the recording.

“You men really need to stop assuming pregnant women aren’t paying attention.”

Elena grinned.

Luciano looked at his wife.

For the first time that night, pride broke cleanly through the fear.

“That’s my wife.”

Kate’s expression shifted.

The words had escaped him naturally.

Neither corrected them.

Margaret checked Kate again.

“We need to get her to the hospital as soon as the road opens.”

“How soon?”

“Road crews estimate an hour.”

Luciano nodded.

Then Kate’s phone vibrated.

A text message.

Unknown number.

She opened it.

One photograph loaded.

A hospital file.

Her name.

Her date of birth.

And a signature authorizing an emergency medical transfer.

The signature looked exactly like Luciano’s.

Except Luciano had never signed it.

A second message arrived.

TRANSFER TEAM ARRIVING IN TEN MINUTES.

Margaret went pale.

“I didn’t request a transfer.”

Luciano looked toward the window.

Headlights appeared beyond the gates.

A large medical transport vehicle was coming up the drive.

Margaret whispered, “That isn’t our ambulance.”

The doorbell rang.

Once.

May you like

Twice.

Then someone downstairs called Luciano’s name.
