Chapter 6 - The Woman in the Black SUV

Nathan's heart stopped.

"What do you mean Elena is with her?"

"Security camera. East gate. Victoria forced her into the SUV."

Thomas's voice cracked.

Nathan climbed into Richard's car.

"Track them."

"I'm already moving."

Federal agents had begun pursuing the vehicle, but Victoria apparently knew the estate's surveillance layout.

She used a service road and disappeared into an industrial district.

Nathan called Elena.

No answer.

Again.

Nothing.

Then a call came from Elena's phone.

Nathan answered immediately.

"Elena?"

Victoria laughed softly.

"Nathan."

His hand tightened around the steering wheel.

"Where is she?"

"Safe."

"If you hurt her—"

"You're hardly in a position to threaten me."

Nathan forced his breathing steady.

"What do you want?"

"You know."

"The proxy is useless now."

"Not the proxy."

"What, then?"

"The drive."

Nathan glanced at Maya.

She sat beside him.

"What drive?"

"Don't insult me. Daniel copied Greenfield's files."

Nathan understood.

The flash drive.

Evidence connecting Crane, Victoria, and the fraudulent transfers.

"You take those files," Victoria said, "and Elena comes home."

"Where?"

Victoria gave him an address.

The same private bank where Thomas had opened the safe-deposit box.

"Come alone."

The line disconnected.

Maya said, "Absolutely not."

Nathan looked straight ahead.

"She has Elena."

"And she wants you emotionally reckless."

"She knows me well."

"Apparently."

Nathan called Thomas.

He told him everything.

Thomas's response was immediate.

"I'm going."

"No."

"She's my wife."

"And Victoria will expect you eventually. If she discovers you're alive before we're ready, Elena may become worthless as leverage."

Thomas went silent.

He hated it.

But Nathan was right.

They coordinated with investigators.

Nathan would enter carrying a duplicate flash drive.

Agents would surround the block.

Thomas and Richard would monitor exits.

Maya would track digital activity.

Daniel would remain with investigators.

At 10:17 p.m., Nathan entered the bank's underground parking structure.

Victoria stood beside a sedan.

Elena sat in the back seat.

Her hands were bound.

Victoria held no visible weapon.

Nathan approached.

"Let her go."

Victoria smiled.

"Give me the drive."

Nathan held it up.

"First Elena."

"Still negotiating."

"You taught me."

Something flickered across Victoria's face.

"Did I?"

Nathan looked at her.

For the first time, there were no wedding guests.

No charities.

No elegant dinners.

No pretending.

Just Nathan and the woman beneath all the performances.

"Was any of it real?"

Victoria's expression barely changed.

"What?"

"Us."

She laughed once.

"You came here to discuss feelings?"

"I came because someone I care about is in that car. But I want to know whether there was ever one day when you weren't using me."

Victoria looked toward Elena.

Then back at Nathan.

"That question matters to you?"

"It used to."

Victoria's eyes hardened.

"Give me the drive."

Nathan stepped closer.

"Answer me."

She stared.

Then finally:

"Some of it."

Nathan hated how much the answer hurt.

"Which part?"

"Does it matter?"

"No."

Victoria almost seemed disappointed.

"Then why ask?"

"Because I needed to know whether I had been stupid or merely trusting."

Victoria's smile faded.

Nathan held the drive higher.

"Your turn."

Victoria opened the rear door.

Elena stepped out.

Nathan moved forward.

Victoria grabbed Elena's shoulder.

"Not so fast."

Nathan stopped.

"Drive."

He tossed it.

Victoria caught it.

She released Elena.

Elena ran.

Nathan pulled her behind him.

Victoria inserted the drive into a small laptop sitting on the hood.

A progress bar appeared.

Files.

Folders.

Account records.

She smiled.

Then the screen displayed:

COPY COMPLETE.

Nathan watched.

"You got what you wanted."

Victoria closed the laptop.

"No."

Nathan frowned.

"I got what Crane wanted."

Headlights appeared at the opposite end of the garage.

A black sedan approached.

Victoria stepped aside.

Sebastian Crane emerged.

Sixty-two.

Silver hair.

Perfect suit.

Calm expression.

Nathan had known him socially for years.

"Mr. Whitmore."

Nathan stared.

"You really came."

Crane smiled.

"I dislike unfinished business."

Sirens sounded faintly outside.

Crane didn't seem concerned.

"You called the police."

Nathan said nothing.

"Of course you did."

Crane looked toward Victoria.

"Did you verify the drive?"

"Yes."

Crane held out his hand.

Victoria gave it to him.

He snapped it in half.

Nathan almost smiled.

Crane noticed.

"What?"

"Nothing."

"You find this amusing?"

"A little."

Crane's eyes narrowed.

Nathan continued.

"You spent years building a plan around what you thought was my greatest weakness."

"Loyalty."

"Exactly."

Nathan looked at Elena.

"And you were right."

Crane's smile faded.

"But you misunderstood what loyalty does."

Nathan's phone buzzed.

Maya.

UPLOAD COMPLETE.

The drive had never mattered.

Every file had already been copied to multiple secure servers.

Crane realized.

His face changed.

"You duplicated it."

"Of course."

Victoria stepped backward.

Crane turned on her.

"You said he was controlled."

Victoria stared at Nathan.

"He was supposed to be."

"Supposed to be?"

Crane moved toward her.

For the first time, Victoria looked afraid.

Nathan saw something unexpected.

Crane wasn't merely her employer.

She feared him.

Deeply.

Crane raised his hand.

Victoria flinched.

Nathan stepped between them.

"Don't."

Crane stared at him.

"After everything she did to you?"

Nathan's voice remained calm.

"What she did doesn't give you permission to hit her."

Victoria looked at Nathan as though she didn't understand him.

Crane laughed.

"Still trying to be the good man."

"No."

Nathan stepped closer.

"I'm trying not to become you."

Federal agents entered the garage.

"Hands where we can see them!"

Crane didn't move.

Victoria did.

Slowly.

Then she looked at Nathan.

Something in her face shifted.

Decision.

Fear.

Regret.

She reached inside her purse.

Agents shouted.

"Hands!"

Nathan moved instinctively.

Victoria pulled out a phone.

Not a weapon.

She threw it toward Nathan.

"There's a recording on it!"

Crane lunged.

Agents tackled him.

Chaos exploded.

Nathan caught the phone.

Victoria dropped to her knees.

Elena ran toward Thomas, who had just entered behind the agents.

Crane shouted curses while officers restrained him.

Within minutes, it was over.

Or appeared to be.

Nathan looked at Victoria.

She sat handcuffed against a concrete pillar.

Her perfect hair had fallen loose.

For the first time, she looked tired.

Human.

Nathan approached.

"What's on the phone?"

Victoria stared at the floor.

"Insurance."

"Against Crane?"

"Yes."

"Why give it to me?"

She finally looked at him.

"Because he was going to kill you tonight."

Nathan went still.

Victoria continued.

"The wedding plan was over. He wanted the evidence gone."

"And me?"

"Gone too."

Nathan stared at her.

"You knew?"

"I found out two hours ago."

"Yet you still kidnapped Elena."

Her eyes closed.

"I needed leverage to get the files before Crane arrived."

"That's not an excuse."

"I know."

Nathan studied her.

It was the first time he had ever heard Victoria say those words without defending herself.

I know.

Agents took her away.

Thomas held Elena.

Maya arrived.

Daniel followed.

For several minutes, Nathan thought it was finished.

Then Daniel unlocked Victoria's phone.

He found the recording.

Crane's voice.

Instructions.

Payments.

Names.

Enough evidence to destroy the network.

Maya began scrolling through additional files.

Then she stopped.

"Nathan."

He turned.

"What?"

"There's another document."

"About Crane?"

"No."

She looked pale.

"About the wedding."

Nathan approached.

The file contained a photograph of Victoria's wedding dress.

Below it was a schedule.

The rehearsal.

Ceremony.

Reception.

Transportation.

Then one line highlighted in red.

POST-CEREMONY CONTINGENCY: VEHICLE FAILURE, BRIDGE ROUTE.

Nathan felt cold.

"They planned an accident."

Daniel nodded.

"After the wedding."

Nathan's phone rang.

Unknown number.

He answered.

A male voice said:

"Mr. Whitmore, this is Saint Anne's Hospital."

Nathan frowned.

"Yes?"

"We have someone here asking for you."

"Who?"

The caller hesitated.

"He says he's your father."

Nathan nearly laughed.

"My father died twelve years ago."

Silence.

May you like

Then the hospital employee said:

"Sir... he knows you believe that."
