Chapter 5 - The Woman Margaret Wanted Him to Marry

Margaret had engineered the Montreal assignment.

Not entirely.

The project was legitimate.

Ethan had earned his position.

But Daniel Price had been encouraged—with money—to choose Ethan over two equally qualified managers.

Margaret had wanted him away.

Claire stared at the email.

“Why?”

Ethan already knew.

“To isolate you.”

During those six months, Margaret had inserted herself into Claire’s life.

Birthday dinners.

School pickups.

Unexpected visits.

Criticism disguised as concern.

Meanwhile, she had fed Ethan small doubts.

Claire sounds stressed.

Noah needs stability.

Maybe Claire resents your career.

Nothing dramatic enough to alarm him.

Just enough to create distance.

Ethan called Daniel.

The man denied everything.

Then Ethan emailed him the evidence.

Daniel stopped denying it.

Margaret had paid a “consulting fee” to his private company.

He insisted he had never understood the larger plan.

Ethan ended the call.

Claire looked devastated.

“She planned this for months.”

“Longer.”

A knock came at the door.

Vanessa stood outside.

Claire stiffened.

Vanessa raised both hands.

“I’m not here for Margaret.”

Ethan let her in.

Vanessa placed her phone on the table.

“I recorded something.”

The previous evening, after leaving Margaret’s house, Vanessa had received seven calls from her.

On the eighth, she answered.

Margaret demanded Vanessa tell Ethan they had been secretly communicating romantically.

Vanessa refused.

Margaret then offered her money.

Claire stared at her.

“For what?”

“To help make you jealous enough to leave.”

Vanessa’s voice cracked.

“I’m sorry I ever let her use my name against you.”

Claire studied her for several seconds.

Then nodded.

“You didn’t create this.”

Vanessa looked relieved.

“But you need to stop letting her create things through you.”

“I have.”

She played the recording.

Margaret’s voice filled the kitchen.

“If Claire believes Ethan has chosen someone else, she’ll leave voluntarily.”

Vanessa replied, “And Noah?”

A pause.

Then Margaret said:

“Noah stays with the Walkers.”

Ethan stopped the recording.

He could not hear more.

Vanessa left him a copy.

That afternoon Ethan called his mother.

“I know about Montreal.”

Silence.

Then Margaret said, “Come see me.”

“No.”

“Ethan—”

“You come here if you want to speak to me.”

An hour later she arrived.

Claire stayed.

That mattered.

Margaret entered and saw the documents spread across the dining table.

Her face hardened.

“You invaded private financial records.”

“Dad gave them to us.”

“Robert is dead.”

“His evidence isn’t.”

Margaret looked at Claire.

“This is what you wanted.”

Claire almost laughed.

“No. What I wanted was a birthday cake for my son without being offered money to disappear.”

Ethan placed Vanessa’s recording on the table.

Margaret recognized her own voice.

For the first time, shame flickered across her face.

Not enough.

“You don’t understand what I lost when your father died.”

Ethan stared at her.

“You don’t get to use grief as permission.”

Margaret’s eyes filled.

“I lost my husband.”

“And you nearly made me lose my wife.”

That landed.

Margaret sat.

For a moment she looked sixty-three instead of invincible.

Then Ethan asked about the foundation.

Her softness vanished.

“Your father exaggerated.”

“We have the records.”

“Records can be interpreted.”

“And recordings?”

Margaret froze.

Ethan noticed.

“What recordings?”

“I don’t know.”

He had not mentioned recordings.

Margaret stood too quickly.

Claire saw it too.

“What are you afraid Robert recorded?”

Margaret grabbed her purse.

“I’m leaving.”

Ethan blocked neither door nor path.

He simply watched her go.

That night, he returned to the digital drive.

There were seventeen audio files.

Sixteen opened normally.

The seventeenth required a password.

Its title was:

THE REAL REASON MARGARET WANTED CLAIRE GONE.

Ethan tried every password he could imagine.

Nothing.

Then Claire noticed a clue embedded in the metadata.

A date.

Their wedding date.

Ethan entered it.

The file unlocked.

Robert’s voice began:

“Ethan, if you are hearing this, your mother has finally done what I feared. But before you confront her again, you need to know that Margaret did not act alone. The person who helped her has been inside your home, around your son, and close enough to Claire to…”
