Chapter 6 - Six Words That Changed Everything

Everyone looked at Evan.

"I don't have it," he said.

Marcus checked the signal.

"Twenty feet."

Gabriel scanned the room.

Richard.

Claire.

Evan.

Investigators.

Thomas being led toward the exit.

Then Claire saw Thomas smile.

"His coat," she said.

Gabriel turned.

Thomas was wearing Evan's black overcoat.

Evan looked down.

His coat was gone.

"When did he—"

"The office," Claire said. "When we came in."

One of the investigators stopped Thomas.

Marcus searched the coat.

Inside was a phone.

The transfers were open on the screen.

Account holder: Evan Mercer.

Thomas laughed.

"You really should protect your passwords."

Evan stared.

"You framed me."

Thomas's expression said the accusation bored him.

Claire understood.

This had always been Thomas's system.

Use someone else's identity.

Someone else's signature.

Someone else's fear.

Make everyone responsible except himself.

"Stop the transfers," Gabriel said.

Marcus worked.

Two completed.

Three pending.

One canceled.

Then the screen locked remotely.

"He's got another device."

Investigators searched Thomas.

Nothing.

Claire looked around.

"Richard."

Her father looked up.

"What?"

"Your phone."

Richard's face told her.

Gabriel held out his hand.

Richard surrendered it.

Marcus opened the banking application.

The remaining transfer was queued.

He canceled it.

Silence.

Thomas's last escape route disappeared.

The investigators took him away.

Richard watched.

Then Claire faced her father.

"You were going to let him put it on Evan too."

Richard shook his head.

"I didn't know."

"You always say that."

"Claire—"

"You didn't know he would use me. You didn't know he would use Evan. You didn't know Mom had evidence. You didn't know about the money."

Her voice stayed calm.

"At some point, Dad, choosing not to know becomes a decision."

Richard lowered his head.

Gabriel looked at Claire.

She no longer looked like the woman who had apologized for bleeding on a warehouse floor.

The difference wasn't physical.

She still wore the oversized gray sweater.

Her hair was still messy.

Her face was exhausted.

But she had stopped shrinking.

Hours later, they sat in a conference room while investigators copied records.

Richard had agreed to cooperate.

Not from courage.

From necessity.

Evan sat alone at the far end.

Claire approached him.

"You knew enough."

He nodded.

"Yes."

"You helped Dad."

"Yes."

"You let him blame me."

His eyes filled.

"Yes."

Claire waited for the excuse.

None came.

"I'm sorry," Evan said.

"That doesn't fix it."

"I know."

"I don't forgive you."

His face tightened.

"I know."

"Maybe someday I will."

He looked up.

"But I'm not promising."

Evan nodded.

That was the first honest conversation they had shared in years.

Gabriel waited outside.

Claire joined him.

"Your money?"

"Most of it recovered."

"Most?"

"Some transfers completed."

"I can trace them."

"You've done enough."

Claire gave him a look.

Gabriel corrected himself.

"You've done more than enough."

"Better."

He smiled.

A real one this time.

Claire stared.

"What?"

"Nothing."

"No, what?"

"I didn't know you could do that."

"Do what?"

"Smile."

"It happens."

"Rare medical condition?"

"Extremely."

She laughed.

The sound surprised both of them.

Then her expression softened.

"Why did you believe me?"

Gabriel leaned against the wall.

"I didn't."

Claire frowned.

"At first."

"Oh."

"I believed that something didn't fit."

"The terrified barefoot woman didn't look like a criminal mastermind?"

"Criminal masterminds wear shoes."

Claire laughed again.

Then Gabriel became serious.

"Your father gave me too much explanation. You gave me none."

"Because I was scared."

"I know."

She looked down.

"People assume scared means weak."

"People assume many convenient things."

Claire looked at him.

"And what do you assume?"

"That you're very good at accounting."

"Romantic."

Gabriel blinked.

Claire's face turned red.

"I didn't mean—"

"I know."

Now he was smiling again.

She covered her face.

"Please forget I said that."

"No."

"Gabriel."

"Absolutely not."

For a few seconds, the nightmare receded.

Then Marcus opened the conference-room door.

"Claire."

She turned.

"We found another file on Eleanor's drive."

"What file?"

"Video."

Claire's smile vanished.

"When?"

"Recorded the night before she went to the hospital."

They gathered around the laptop.

Eleanor appeared on screen.

Thin from treatment.

Tired.

But smiling.

"Claire," she said.

Claire immediately began crying.

"If you're seeing this, sweetheart, then you've probably spent far too long believing things about yourself that were never true."

Claire covered her mouth.

Gabriel moved beside her.

Eleanor continued.

"You are not difficult."

Claire closed her eyes.

"You are not too much."

A sob escaped.

"You are not weak."

Claire's shoulders shook.

"And you are not responsible for carrying this family."

Richard stood in the doorway behind them.

He heard every word.

Eleanor smiled into the camera.

"I know you think being quiet keeps peace. It doesn't. Sometimes quiet only gives cruel people more room."

Claire wiped her cheeks.

Then Eleanor spoke the six words Thomas had remembered for seven years.

"Claire will finish what I started."

The recording ended.

Nobody moved.

Richard quietly left.

Claire stared at the black screen.

Gabriel didn't touch her until she reached for his hand.

Then he held hers.

Not tightly.

Just enough.

Marcus's laptop chimed.

Another encrypted folder had unlocked automatically when the video finished.

Claire looked at the screen.

The folder contained one file.

A legal document.

Its title made Evan stand immediately.

MERCER FREIGHT—TRUE OWNERSHIP AGREEMENT.

Claire opened it.

Her mother's signature was at the bottom.

So was Thomas Hale's.

And according to the document, Richard Mercer had never actually owned Mercer Freight.

Claire read the final line.

Then she whispered:

"Oh my God."

May you like

The controlling interest belonged to someone else.

And the name was on the next page.
