Chapter 5 - The Father Ethan Never Knew

Claire screamed Noah’s name.

Marcus tightened one arm around the child.

“Easy.”

Ethan moved toward the stairs.

Marcus lifted a handgun.

“Stop.”

Ethan stopped.

Noah cried.

“Mom!”

Claire’s entire body shook.

“I’m right here, baby.”

“Tell him to let me go.”

“I will.”

She looked at Marcus.

“Please.”

Marcus seemed almost offended.

“I’m not going to hurt him.”

Ethan’s voice was ice.

“You already have.”

Marcus looked at him.

“Emotionally, perhaps.”

Samuel took one step.

The gun shifted toward him.

“You stay exactly where you are.”

Margaret stared upward.

“You were supposed to be dead.”

Marcus smiled.

“You should choose more competent people.”

“You took Noah from my house?”

“Your house?”

He laughed.

“You took him from the café. I simply took him from you.”

Ethan understood.

Marcus had not kidnapped Noah first.

Margaret had.

Then Marcus intercepted.

“How did you survive?”

“Your mother’s hired man is a terrible shot.”

Margaret said nothing.

Marcus looked around the room.

“All this trouble over a dead man’s paperwork.”

Ethan held up the envelope.

“You want this?”

“Yes.”

“You get it when Noah comes downstairs.”

Marcus shook his head.

“No.”

“That’s the deal.”

“I don’t negotiate with people who think money makes them powerful.”

Ethan almost laughed.

“Coming from you?”

Marcus’s smile disappeared.

“I spent twenty years cleaning up your father’s mistakes.”

“My father?”

Marcus glanced at Samuel.

“Whichever one you prefer.”

“Why?”

“Because Richard promised me equity.”

Margaret closed her eyes.

Ethan understood.

“You were supposed to receive shares.”

“Ten percent.”

“And Richard cheated you.”

“Richard cheated everyone.”

Marcus looked at Noah.

“When the boy appeared, I realized there was another way.”

Claire whispered, “You’re using my son for stock?”

“No.”

Marcus looked genuinely annoyed.

“I’m using the truth.”

He explained.

If Noah’s DNA established Ethan as his father, and Ethan’s DNA established Samuel as his biological father, the original trust could trigger a complete reallocation.

Samuel would become majority controller.

Unless Samuel had signed an assignment transferring his interest.

Marcus looked at Samuel.

“You brought it?”

Samuel’s face tightened.

“No.”

“You promised.”

Ethan turned.

“You were working with him?”

Samuel looked ashamed.

“Only at first.”

Margaret laughed bitterly.

“There’s your father.”

Samuel ignored her.

“I needed Marcus to find you.”

“You knew where I was.”

“No. Richard erased everything after I left.”

“And Noah?”

“I didn’t know he existed.”

Marcus interrupted.

“Until I told him.”

Ethan looked at Samuel.

“What did you offer Marcus?”

Samuel remained silent.

“Tell me.”

“Shares.”

“How many?”

“Five percent.”

Ethan stepped toward him.

“Of a company that wasn’t yours.”

“I thought it should have been.”

“So my mother was right.”

“No.”

Samuel’s voice broke.

“I came back angry. I wanted what Richard stole.”

“And then?”

“Then I saw you.”

Silence.

Samuel looked at Ethan.

“At the foundation gala three months ago. You didn’t see me. You were speaking to a janitor who’d worked there thirty years. You knew his wife’s name. You asked about his daughter.”

Ethan frowned.

Samuel continued.

“I had spent twenty-six years telling myself Richard would make you like him. It made leaving easier.”

His eyes filled.

“But you weren’t like him.”

Margaret looked away.

Samuel said, “Then Marcus showed me photographs of Claire and Noah.”

Claire stiffened.

“I saw my grandson.”

The word landed heavily.

“And suddenly the shares felt ridiculous.”

Marcus laughed.

“Touching.”

Samuel looked up.

“I told him the deal was off.”

“And I disagreed.”

Marcus tightened his grip on Noah.

Ethan forced himself to remain calm.

“Marcus. Let the boy go.”

“When I have the documents.”

“You’ll have them.”

“And the DNA samples.”

Margaret looked sharply at him.

“What samples?”

Marcus smiled.

“I collected Ethan’s months ago.”

Ethan stared.

“How?”

“Glass at a charity dinner.”

“And Noah?”

Marcus touched Noah’s hair.

Claire made a furious sound.

“I already have his.”

Ethan understood.

The kidnapping had never been necessary for DNA.

Marcus wanted leverage.

“Then what do you need us for?”

“To make everyone sign.”

Marcus gestured toward a table upstairs.

“Documents transferring Samuel’s interest to me.”

Samuel laughed.

“You think that survives court?”

“With the original trust destroyed and enough private settlements? Yes.”

“You’re insane,” Margaret said.

Marcus looked at her.

“No. I watched your family do this for twenty years. The only difference is I stopped pretending it was respectable.”

Noah sniffed.

“My mom says bad words aren’t allowed.”

Everyone went silent.

Marcus blinked.

“What?”

Noah looked at him.

“You said stupid before.”

Claire almost sobbed from relief at hearing her son sound like himself.

Marcus’s expression softened strangely.

“Your mother is probably right.”

Noah pointed downward.

“Can I go to her?”

Marcus looked at Claire.

For one second, something human appeared.

Then disappeared.

“No.”

Noah frowned.

“You said I could after they came.”

Marcus tightened his jaw.

Ethan heard it.

A promise.

“You promised him.”

Marcus looked at Ethan.

“He’s four.”

“So?”

“He’ll forget.”

Ethan’s voice lowered.

“No. He won’t.”

Marcus’s eyes shifted.

Ethan continued.

“He’ll remember being scared on those stairs. He’ll remember you telling him his mother was coming. He’ll remember whether your word meant anything.”

Silence.

“You worked for Richard,” Ethan said. “You know exactly what a man becomes when his promises mean nothing.”

Marcus’s face changed.

Claire saw it.

Ethan had found the wound.

“You’re not Richard,” Ethan said.

“Don’t manipulate me.”

“I’m not.”

“Yes, you are.”

“No. I’m asking whether five percent of a company is worth becoming the man you hated.”

Marcus looked down at Noah.

The gun lowered half an inch.

Then a window shattered.

Everyone ducked.

Marcus pulled Noah backward.

Daniel’s voice thundered from outside.

“Federal agents! Drop the weapon!”

Ethan swore.

He had told Daniel not to move until signaled.

Someone else had called authorities.

Marcus dragged Noah toward the hallway.

Claire ran up two stairs.

“No!”

Ethan grabbed her.

“Let me go!”

“He has a gun!”

“That’s my baby!”

Marcus disappeared upstairs.

Ethan ran after him.

Samuel followed.

Claire followed despite Ethan shouting at her to stay back.

They reached the upper hallway.

A door slammed.

Ethan kicked it open.

Empty bedroom.

Window open.

Fire escape outside.

Marcus had taken Noah onto the roof.

Rain made the tiles shine.

Claire appeared behind Ethan.

“Noah!”

A small cry answered.

They climbed through the window.

Marcus stood near the roofline.

Noah beside him.

Gun lowered.

Police lights flashed below.

“Marcus,” Ethan said.

“No closer.”

Ethan stopped.

Samuel came through the window.

Marcus laughed.

“Look at us.”

Nobody answered.

“All Richard’s leftovers.”

Samuel said, “Give me the gun.”

Marcus shook his head.

“You had your chance.”

“No. I didn’t.”

Samuel stepped forward.

“I spent twenty-six years running from what I did.”

Marcus raised the gun.

“Stop.”

Samuel did not.

“I traded the woman I loved and the son I never met for money because I was afraid.”

Margaret appeared at the window.

Her face broke.

Samuel looked at her.

“I’m sorry.”

Margaret whispered, “Samuel.”

“I am so sorry.”

Marcus shouted, “Stop moving!”

Samuel stopped.

Then he looked at Noah.

“You don’t have to repeat us.”

Marcus’s hand shook.

“Shut up.”

“Let him go.”

“I said shut up.”

“You can walk down those stairs without becoming Richard.”

Marcus’s eyes filled.

For one second, the whole roof became still.

Then Noah slipped.

Claire screamed.

Marcus dropped the gun and grabbed him with both hands.

Ethan lunged.

He caught Noah’s arm.

Samuel caught Ethan.

Together they pulled the child back onto the roof.

Claire grabbed Noah and collapsed around him.

Marcus stood several feet away.

His gun lay near the edge.

Daniel came through the window.

“Hands!”

Marcus lifted them.

No resistance.

Police took him.

Claire held Noah against her chest.

He cried into her shoulder.

Ethan crouched beside them.

Noah looked up.

“Tattoo man.”

Ethan laughed through tears.

“Yeah.”

“You came.”

“I told you I would.”

Noah reached one small hand toward him.

Ethan took it.

Claire watched.

Noah looked between them.

“Why are you both crying?”

Claire kissed his hair.

“Because we love you.”

Noah seemed satisfied.

Then he asked the question Claire had feared.

“Does he love me too?”

Ethan could not speak.

Claire looked at him.

Then at Noah.

“Yes,” she whispered.

Noah frowned.

“How?”

Claire closed her eyes.

The truth had arrived.

She could delay it no longer.

She took Noah’s hand.

“Sweetheart, Ethan isn’t just somebody I knew.”

Noah waited.

Claire’s lips parted.

Before she could speak, Margaret interrupted.

“Claire.”

Everyone turned.

Margaret held a phone.

Her face was white.

“Richard left another recording.”

Ethan stood.

“How?”

“Scheduled email.”

“When?”

“Tonight.”

Margaret turned the screen toward him.

The subject line contained six words.
