Chapter 4 - The Secret Patrick Took to His Grave

Patrick Callahan had died at an unfinished luxury tower near the East River.

Officially, he'd fallen through an unsecured opening on the twenty-third floor.

The contractor paid a settlement.

The safety supervisor lost his license.

Everyone moved on.

Grace never had.

Now Luca stood inside the same concrete skeleton while midnight traffic glittered below.

He had not come alone.

Not technically.

Marco and Roman remained six blocks away with teams positioned around every possible exit.

But inside the building, Luca walked by himself.

He reached the twenty-third floor.

One work light glowed.

Beneath it sat a metal toolbox.

Patrick's name had been scratched into the lid.

Luca approached.

The toolbox wasn't locked.

Inside were ordinary tools.

Wrenches.

Pliers.

Tape measure.

Then Luca noticed the false bottom.

Beneath it was a waterproof envelope.

Inside:

A photograph.

Three young men.

Daniel Mercer.

Patrick Callahan.

Luca.

They stood outside a boxing gym fourteen years earlier.

Luca remembered the day now.

Daniel had brought a government consultant to meet him.

Patrick.

He'd forgotten his name.

On the back:

THREE FATHERS. ONE DAUGHTER. ONE KEY.

Exactly as Grace had described.

Another paper contained the name of a fertility clinic.

A third contained banking information.

The final item was a flash drive.

Luca inserted it into a hardened laptop Marco had provided.

One file.

Video.

Patrick appeared on-screen.

He looked exhausted.

"If anyone is watching this, I probably failed."

Luca leaned closer.

"My name is Patrick Callahan. My wife Grace knows none of what I'm about to say."

Patrick looked directly into the camera.

"Keep it that way unless there's no choice."

Luca's jaw tightened.

"Daniel Mercer discovered a private network called the Covenant. It wasn't a crime family. It was a protection system for powerful men. Politicians. Judges. police. businessmen. Organized crime."

Luca thought of his father.

"Daniel got a ledger containing identities, payments, crimes, and locations."

Patrick exhaled.

"We knew they would kill him for it."

The next words came slowly.

"So we broke the ledger into three encrypted archives."

Three fathers.

"Daniel kept one access key."

Patrick held up his own key.

"I kept another."

Then:

"The third was hidden genetically."

Luca stared.

"We needed something no thief could steal, duplicate, or force from us easily."

His stomach turned.

Patrick continued.

"Luca Moretti's father had secretly collected medical and genetic information on everyone around him, including Luca. We stole Luca's sample."

Luca's fists clenched.

"We combined Luca's genetic marker with Caroline Reed's embryo during a fertility operation involving my wife."

Patrick's face filled with shame.

"Grace believed we were using our own viable embryo. She never knew."

Luca stood completely still.

Ivy.

His daughter.

Biologically his.

Carried and raised by Grace.

Created from an embryo belonging to another woman.

Used as a living cryptographic key.

Rage came slowly because the truth was too monstrous for immediate anger.

Patrick continued.

"I loved Ivy from the moment she was born. Whatever her biology says, she's my daughter."

For the first time, Luca agreed with a dead man.

"If you're watching this, understand something important: Ivy does not contain evidence. Her DNA unlocks one part of a system. Without Daniel's key and mine, hers is useless."

Luca leaned closer.

"Patrick's key," he whispered.

As though answering him, the recording continued.

"I destroyed my physical key. Mine now exists inside a trust document registered to Grace."

The forced marriage.

Vale needed legal access to her assets.

"The trust activates only through her legal spouse or heir under specific conditions."

Luca finally understood.

Vale needed Grace.

And Ivy.

And Daniel.

All three components.

Patrick's video continued.

"Caroline Reed volunteered the embryo."

Luca stopped breathing.

"She knew she was dying."

Caroline.

A woman Luca had loved for three months and mourned for years.

"She believed creating the genetic key was the only way to protect the ledger until the Covenant could be destroyed."

Luca's eyes burned.

"I disagreed. Daniel disagreed. But by then, Luca's father had started hunting everyone."

Patrick leaned toward the camera.

"Luca, if you're seeing this, I'm sorry."

A noise came from the dark floor behind him.

Luca closed the laptop.

"Come out."

Nothing.

He drew his gun.

"Now."

A man stepped from behind a concrete column.

Adrian Vale.

Tailored coat.

No weapon visible.

"You always were impatient," Vale said.

"Where's Ivy?"

"Safe."

"Daniel?"

"Also safe."

"Grace?"

"With your people, I assume."

"Then you don't have what you need."

Vale smiled.

"I have enough."

Luca aimed at his chest.

"You murdered Patrick."

"Did I?"

"Yes."

"Patrick jumped."

"Why?"

"Because he thought death would protect his family."

"You pushed him into the situation."

"Semantics."

Luca's finger tightened.

Vale remained calm.

"If you kill me, you'll never find Ivy."

"Then start talking."

Vale gestured toward the laptop.

"You know what she is now."

"She's a child."

"She's a key."

"Say that again."

Something in Luca's voice finally affected Vale.

He corrected himself.

"She was designed as one."

"Not anymore."

"The Covenant doesn't care how sentimental you've become."

"You're the Covenant?"

Vale smiled.

"Part of it."

"Who leads it?"

"Nobody leads it. That's why it survived."

"Where's Daniel?"

"Trying to protect Ivy."

"From you?"

"From everyone."

Luca frowned.

Vale stepped closer.

"You still think Daniel is your friend."

"He saved my life."

"He also used your DNA."

"Patrick said Daniel objected."

"Patrick lied."

Luca studied Vale.

"Why should I believe you?"

"Because Daniel had access to your father's medical archive. Patrick didn't."

That was plausible.

Too plausible.

"Daniel created Ivy?"

"Daniel designed the encryption."

Luca's gun stayed level.

"And Caroline?"

"Daniel recruited her."

"You expect me to believe Daniel used my child as a lock?"

"I expect you to ask him."

Vale's phone rang.

He answered.

"Yes?"

His expression changed.

"What?"

Luca watched.

Vale turned away.

"How?"

A pause.

Then he looked at Luca.

For the first time, genuine alarm.

Vale ended the call.

"What happened?" Luca asked.

"Daniel escaped."

Luca almost laughed.

"Good."

Vale's eyes hardened.

"He took Ivy."

"Better."

"No."

Vale moved closer.

"You don't understand."

"Then explain."

"Daniel can't unlock the archive without her. He has spent twelve years waiting for this."

Luca's confidence faltered.

"He could have taken her years ago."

"He didn't know where Patrick hid her."

"She wasn't hidden."

"Her identity was."

Luca thought about sealed records.

Altered paternity.

Patrick's silence.

Vale continued.

"Grace accidentally found Daniel three days ago because my men moved him into a building she cleaned. Daniel realized who she was. Then he realized where Ivy was."

"If you know all this, why keep Daniel prisoner?"

"Because I discovered his plan."

"Which was?"

"Use Ivy to open the archive and release everything."

"That sounds like destroying the Covenant."

Vale's stare was cold.

"It also exposes undercover agents, protected witnesses, innocent families, and operations embedded in that ledger. Daniel doesn't care anymore."

Luca remembered Daniel's face in the photograph.

Twelve years imprisoned could change a man.

"You're lying."

"Maybe."

A distant shot cracked.

Luca moved.

Vale ducked.

Another shot struck concrete.

Sniper.

Both men took cover.

"Yours?" Luca demanded.

"No."

That meant a third party.

Luca called Marco.

"We're compromised."

"We know. Multiple vehicles entering."

"Get here."

"Thirty seconds."

Vale looked toward the stairwell.

"That's the Covenant."

"You said you're part of it."

"I was."

"Was?"

"They've decided I'm expendable."

Luca almost enjoyed that.

Vale reached inside his coat slowly.

Luca aimed.

"Careful."

Vale removed a phone.

"Daniel sent this ten minutes ago."

He showed the screen.

A message.

YOU WANTED THE KEY. COME GET HER.

Below it was an address.

Grace's fertility clinic.

Abandoned for seven years.

Luca's blood chilled.

"He's taking Ivy there."

"Yes."

"Why?"

Vale looked him directly in the eye.

"Because beneath that clinic is the original Covenant archive."

Gunfire erupted downstairs.

Luca's men were arriving.

Vale stepped toward a service staircase.

"Are you coming?"

Luca hated the idea of trusting him.

But Ivy was at the end of that address.

"Move."

They descended together.

By the time Luca reached his vehicle, Grace had been brought to the perimeter.

She ran toward him.

"Where's Ivy?"

"Daniel has her."

Her face collapsed.

"You said he was helping us."

"I don't know what he's doing."

"I do."

Luca turned.

Grace held up her phone.

A message had arrived from Ivy's number.

MOMMY I'M OKAY.

Below it was another line.

MR. DANIEL SAYS LUCA CAN'T COME INSIDE.

Then a photograph loaded.

Ivy sat in a medical chair.

Daniel stood behind her.

And on a steel table beside them rested three syringes.

Grace's voice broke.

"What is he going to do to my daughter?"

Before Luca could answer, another message appeared.

It was from Daniel.

BRING GRACE.
