Fifteen Days Too Late / Chapter 5 / 7

Chapter 5 - The Letter Evelyn Left Behind

Madison stared at the phone.

“Call her back.”

Vincent already was.

No answer.

Again.

Nothing.

Marco moved toward the door.

“I’ll get a team.”

“No,” Rachel said.

Everyone looked at her.

“Keane expects that.”

Vincent’s jaw tightened.

“I’m not leaving Claire there.”

Rachel studied him.

“Interesting.”

“What?”

“Three days ago, you would have called her a traitor.”

Vincent looked toward Madison.

“Three days ago I was an idiot.”

Madison spoke quietly.

“She helped me leave.”

Vincent turned.

“I know.”

“She could have stopped me.”

“Yes.”

“She could have told Keane where Anthony took us.”

Vincent nodded slowly.

“She didn’t.”

Madison looked at Rachel.

“So Claire was protecting us.”

“Probably while trying to survive her father.”

Rachel opened Evelyn’s old files.

“Keane has spent decades hiding his connection to Frank. If Evelyn’s letter becomes public, he loses more than an election. He faces conspiracy charges.”

Vincent paced.

“So we give him what he wants.”

Madison immediately said, “No.”

“A copy.”

“He’ll know.”

“Not if he never gets close enough to inspect it.”

Rachel smiled faintly.

“Now you sound like Evelyn.”

Vincent looked at her.

“What would my mother have done?”

Rachel’s expression turned sad.

“She would have wanted you nowhere near this life.”

That answer hurt more than he expected.

Vincent sat.

“Then help me end it.”

For the next two hours, they built a plan.

Not a mafia plan.

No assassins.

No bodies disappearing.

Evidence.

Recorded communication.

Police.

Federal contacts Rachel still trusted.

Vincent provided account records from Carter companies.

Marco opened encrypted ledgers.

Madison watched him.

“You’re giving them everything.”

Vincent did not look up.

“Yes.”

“You could go to prison.”

“Yes.”

“For how long?”

“I don’t know.”

Her stomach tightened.

This was what she had wanted, wasn’t it?

A husband willing to choose them.

Yet she had not imagined the choice might take him away anyway.

“Vincent.”

He looked at her.

“I don’t want Noah growing up visiting you behind glass.”

“Neither do I.”

“Then why—”

“Because if I protect myself now, I teach him exactly what my father taught me.”

Madison fell silent.

Vincent walked toward her.

“I did things I’m not proud of.”

She gave him a look.

“That may be the understatement of the century.”

“I’m trying.”

“I know.”

“I can’t ask you to forgive what you don’t even know.”

Madison’s eyes softened.

“That’s the first thing you’ve said that makes me think you might actually understand.”

He took a breath.

“I want to tell you everything.”

“Not tonight.”

He nodded.

“When you’re ready.”

Again, no argument.

That mattered.

They drove to the old shipping terminal just after midnight.

Madison remained in Rachel’s vehicle two blocks away.

Vincent had objected.

Madison had ignored him.

Marco accompanied Vincent inside.

The terminal had not operated legally in years.

Keane waited near an empty loading platform.

Claire sat in a chair.

Her hands were bound.

Alive.

Vincent saw no blood.

Relief flickered across his face.

Keane smiled.

“Vincent Carter.”

“Senator.”

“You brought the letter?”

Vincent lifted an envelope.

“Let Claire go.”

Keane laughed.

“You inherited Frank’s arrogance.”

“Apparently not his patience.”

Keane stepped closer.

“You have no idea what your father built.”

“I’m beginning to.”

“He made you powerful.”

“He made me alone.”

Keane’s smile faded.

“Sentiment. That woman ruined you.”

Vincent’s face became cold.

“No.”

He looked at Claire.

“She reminded me I was already ruined.”

Claire’s eyes filled.

Keane held out his hand.

“The letter.”

Vincent tossed the envelope onto the floor between them.

Keane frowned.

“Pick it up.”

“No.”

“You think this is a negotiation?”

“I think you’re afraid of a dead woman’s handwriting.”

Keane’s face tightened.

Good.

Rachel had told Vincent to keep him talking.

Every word recorded.

“You know what Evelyn did?” Keane said. “She threatened everything.”

Vincent remained still.

“What did my father do?”

Keane laughed.

“Frank did what powerful men do.”

“Say it.”

“He protected his family.”

“By killing my mother?”

Claire closed her eyes.

Keane stared at Vincent.

Then smiled.

“Your mother wasn’t innocent.”

Vincent’s fists tightened.

“She was sleeping with Anthony Bell.”

“So?”

Keane seemed surprised.

Vincent continued.

“So my father owned her?”

“Frank raised another man’s son.”

The words echoed.

Marco stared at Vincent.

Vincent did not move.

“So Anthony is my father.”

Keane smiled.

“There. Now you know.”

Vincent’s chest tightened, but he kept speaking.

“And Frank killed her for it.”

“Frank lost control.”

“Did you help him?”

Keane hesitated.

That was enough.

Vincent pushed.

“You helped cover up her murder.”

“I fixed Frank’s mistake.”

Claire stared at her father.

Keane realized too late how much he had admitted.

He stepped toward the envelope.

Vincent said, “What about Madison?”

Keane stopped.

“What about her?”

“You had Harlan give her anticoagulants.”

Keane smiled slowly.

Claire began shaking her head.

“No…”

Vincent’s voice became dangerous.

“Why?”

“Leverage.”

The answer made Vincent’s vision narrow.

“Against me?”

“You had become difficult.”

“So you tried to kill her.”

“I didn’t say that.”

“You knew she could hemorrhage.”

Keane shrugged.

“Complications happen during childbirth.”

Vincent took one step.

Marco grabbed his arm.

“Boss.”

Vincent stopped.

Madison’s voice echoed in his head.

If you become the man they expect you to become, they control you.

He forced himself still.

Keane laughed.

“There he is. Frank’s boy.”

Vincent looked at him.

“No.”

Sirens sounded outside.

Keane’s smile vanished.

“What did you do?”

“Something my father never would.”

Police vehicles surrounded the terminal.

Federal agents followed.

Rachel entered through the side entrance.

“Thomas Keane, don’t move.”

Keane grabbed Claire.

A pistol appeared against her neck.

Vincent froze.

“Let her go.”

“You think you can destroy me?”

Keane backed toward a side door.

Claire was crying.

“Dad, stop.”

“Quiet.”

“You hurt Madison.”

“I did what was necessary.”

Claire closed her eyes.

Vincent saw her shift her weight.

Then she drove her heel into Keane’s foot.

The gun moved.

Marco lunged.

A shot fired.

Madison heard it from the vehicle.

She ran.

Rachel shouted after her, but Madison was already inside.

She found Vincent kneeling on the concrete.

Blood covered his shirt.

“Vincent!”

He looked up.

“I’m fine.”

The blood belonged to Marco.

The bullet had struck his shoulder.

Claire was safe.

Keane lay handcuffed on the floor.

Madison stopped beside Vincent.

For a moment, neither spoke.

Then she slapped him.

The entire terminal went silent.

Vincent blinked.

“You scared me.”

He rubbed his cheek.

“I noticed.”

Madison started crying.

He did not touch her immediately.

He waited.

That mattered too.

Then Madison stepped forward and wrapped her arms around him.

Vincent held her carefully.

Not tightly.

Not possessively.

Just there.

“I’m sorry,” he whispered.

Madison pressed her face against his chest.

“You keep saying that.”

“I have a lot to apologize for.”

She almost laughed through tears.

Behind them, Keane was taken away.

Rachel collected evidence.

Marco complained loudly about hospitals.

For one moment, Vincent believed the worst was finished.

Then Rachel approached.

Her expression was serious.

“We have a problem.”

Vincent looked at her.

“What?”

“The federal prosecutor received your ledgers.”

“I expected that.”

“They’re offering cooperation.”

Madison’s grip tightened around his hand.

“What kind?”

Rachel looked at Vincent.

“Full testimony against every active Carter operation.”

Vincent nodded.

“And?”

“In exchange, they’ll consider reducing your charges.”

Madison asked, “Reducing to what?”

Rachel hesitated.

“Best case? Several years.”

Madison went pale.

Vincent looked at her.

She stepped backward.

“No.”

“Madison—”

“No. We just got you back.”

He reached for her.

She shook her head.

“No.”

Then Rachel’s phone rang.

She answered.

Her expression changed immediately.

“What do you mean he’s gone?”

Vincent frowned.

“Who?”

Rachel lowered the phone.

“Dr. Harlan.”

“What happened?”

“He was taken from federal custody twenty minutes ago.”

Vincent’s face hardened.

Rachel looked directly at Madison.

“And before he disappeared, he left a statement saying Keane wasn’t the person who ordered the drug given to you.”

Madison stopped breathing.

Vincent asked, “Then who did?”

Rachel looked toward the terminal entrance.

A familiar figure had just stepped through the door.

May you like

Anthony Bell.

And he was carrying Frank Carter’s original medical ledger.
