CHAPTER 1 – The Suitcase That Made Everyone Hate Me

Chapter 2 – The Letter Nobody Was Supposed To Read

Rachel froze.

Her hand tightened around Emma.

Slowly...

she turned toward her sister.

Emily stared at her.

"What letter?"

Rachel's lips trembled.

"I burned it."

Emily looked confused.

"No..."

"I found another one."

My heart dropped.

Another one?

Emily walked inside.

A few seconds later...

she returned holding a folded piece of paper.

It had been tucked beneath Emma's mattress.

My hands began to shake before I even opened it.

Across the top...

Rachel had written only three words.

"To My Daughter."

I couldn't breathe.

The first sentence shattered me.

"If you're reading this...

I'm probably gone."

Emily covered her mouth.

Rachel closed her eyes.

She couldn't even look at us.

The neighbors outside stopped recording.

Even from the sidewalk...

they realized something was terribly wrong.

I kept reading.

"This isn't your father's fault."

"He tried to save me every single day."

The crowd outside grew silent.

Another line.

"Please don't let Emma believe

I left because I didn't love her."

My vision blurred.

The paper shook in my hands.

Rachel whispered,

"I wrote that weeks ago."

"I never meant for anyone to see it."

Emily stepped closer.

"Rachel..."

"When?"

Rachel answered quietly.

"The night I stood beside Emma's crib."

My blood ran cold.

The same night...

I had found her staring silently at our daughter.

The same night...

she told me,

"She deserves another mother."

I suddenly realized...

that wasn't just sadness.

It was a goodbye.

Emily began crying.

"You were planning to leave us."

Rachel slowly nodded.

"I thought..."

"Everyone would be happier."

Just then...

a police cruiser stopped outside.

One of the neighbors had called for a welfare check.

From the street...

they had assumed I was forcing my wife out.

Two officers walked toward us.

One looked at Rachel.

The other noticed the tears.

Then he saw the letter in my hands.

"What happened here?"

Before I could answer...

Rachel spoke first.

"My husband didn't do anything."

The officer frowned.

She continued.

"He saved my life."

The officers relaxed slightly.

But they weren't leaving.

One of them asked,

"Ma'am..."

"Have you had thoughts of hurting yourself?"

Rachel looked at Emma.

Then slowly whispered,

"Yes."

Emily broke down.

I felt my knees give out.

The officer spoke gently.

"Thank you for telling us."

"You don't have to fight this alone."

Rachel looked around.

For the first time...

she noticed the neighbors.

Some looked embarrassed.

Some were crying.

Others quietly put their phones away.

Then something happened...

that none of us expected.

Mrs. Carter...

the elderly woman from next door...

walked across the lawn.

She hugged Rachel without saying a word.

Then another neighbor came.

Then another.

Within minutes...

the same people who had judged us...

were standing around my wife...

telling her,

"You're not alone."

Rachel cried harder than I'd ever seen.

Not because she was ashamed.

Because...

for the first time in weeks...

she believed someone actually understood.

Then the senior officer turned toward me.

"I need to ask one question."

I nodded.

He looked me straight in the eye.

"When was the last time..."

"...you slept more than three hours?"

I blinked.

"I don't remember."

He gave a small smile.

"I thought so."

Then he said something I'll never forget.

"Sometimes the strongest person in the house...

is the one nobody thinks to check on."

An ambulance arrived.

Not with sirens.

Not because Rachel had committed a crime.

But because someone had finally believed her.

As the paramedics helped Rachel inside...

she reached for my hand.

Tears streamed down her face.

"I'm sorry."

I shook my head.

"No."

"You came back."

"That's all that matters."

Just before the ambulance doors closed...

Rachel whispered something only I could hear.

"There's one more letter..."

I frowned.

"What?"

She squeezed my hand.

"It's hidden somewhere..."

"...that only Emma will find."

The ambulance doors closed.

May you like

Leaving me with one terrifying question.

Why would my wife hide another goodbye letter... if she had finally chosen to live?
