Chapter 14 - The Last Secret

Ward requested to meet Nora publicly.
Federal agents attended.
So did Nico.
Ward looked older.
Smaller.
He placed one envelope on the table.
“This is the last thing I kept from you.”
Nora did not touch it.
“Why now?”
“Because I'm dying.”
She felt no satisfaction.
Only exhaustion.
“What is it?”
“Your mother's confession.”
Nora stiffened.
Ward explained that Caroline had once worked with Meridian.
Not willingly at first.
Then willingly enough.
She carried financial documents for Salvatore.
She knew Daniel was investigating him.
For months, she said nothing.
Then she fell in love with Daniel.
She helped him gather evidence.
Her decision ultimately saved lives.
But it also came too late to save others.
Nora opened Caroline’s letter.
Her mother did not excuse herself.
That mattered.
Caroline wrote that love had not magically made her brave.
She had chosen courage after choosing fear many times.
Nora understood.
People were not clean categories.
Victim.
Villain.
Hero.
Coward.
Sometimes one life contained pieces of all four.
She folded the letter.
“Is that everything?”
Ward nodded.
“Yes.”
Nora stood.
“You should have told the truth thirty years ago.”
“I know.”
“I don't forgive you.”
“I know.”
“But I won't spend another thirty years carrying your secrets.”
She left.
Outside, Nico waited.
“What did he say?”
Nora handed him the letter.
Then changed her mind.
She put it into her bag.
“Later.”
Nico nodded.
No demand.
No suspicion.
Later.
That single word showed her how far they had come.
Their wedding took place three months afterward.
Small.
Forty guests.
Belladonna closed for the evening.
Viviana insisted on organizing everything.
Nora immediately regretted allowing this.
“You ordered six thousand roses?”
“Five thousand eight hundred.”
“Why?”
“Symmetry.”
Nora laughed.
Daniel, now walking confidently, served as ring bearer.
He abandoned the pillow halfway down the aisle and ran toward Nico.
Everyone laughed.
Nico lifted him.
Then looked at Nora.
No criminal empire.
No arranged engagement.
No threats.
Just the three of them.
Vittorio sat in the first row.
Claire Ellis beside him.
Viviana stood with Nora.
Luca stood with Nico.
The ceremony began.
Then the restaurant doors opened.
Every security officer turned.
Nora’s heart jumped.
A federal agent entered.
He approached quietly.
Nico tensed.
The agent whispered something.
Nico's face changed.
Nora stepped toward him.
“What?”
He hesitated.
She gave him a look.
No more secrets.
Nico nodded.
“Salvatore died this morning.”
Nora absorbed the news.
Her biological father.
A stranger.
A criminal.
A man whose choices had shaped her entire life.
She felt grief.
Not for him exactly.
For everything that could have been different.
Nico asked, “Do you want to stop?”
Nora looked at Daniel.
At Claire.
At Viviana.
At the man she loved.
“No.”
They continued.
When the officiant asked Nora whether she chose Nico, she smiled.
“I do.”
Not because fate demanded it.
Not because families arranged it.
Because she chose.
Nico said the same.
They exchanged rings.
Then Daniel yelled, “Mama!”
Everyone laughed again.
Nora kissed her son before kissing her husband.
Hours later, after the celebration, Nora and Nico stood alone beside Table One.
Nora rested her head against his shoulder.
“Remember when Viviana insulted me here?”
“Unfortunately.”
“She did me a favor.”
Viviana’s voice came from behind them.
“I've been saying that for a year.”
They turned.
Viviana stood in the doorway holding a sealed envelope.
Her expression was strange.
“What is that?” Nora asked.
“It arrived ten minutes ago.”
“For whom?”
Viviana looked at Nico.
Then Nora.
“For Daniel.”
Nora frowned.
“He's a toddler.”
“I know.”
“Who sent it?”
Viviana turned the envelope over.
There was no return address.
Only one sentence written across the back.
TO BE OPENED BY HIS MOTHER BEFORE MIDNIGHT.
Nora reached for the seal.
May you like
It was already broken.
Someone had opened it before them.
