Chapter 5 - The Woman Wearing Evelyn’s Coat

Dominic moved first.
He grabbed the impostor before she reached her pocket.
Marco pinned her against the wall.
“Where is my mother?”
The woman smiled.
“Already gone.”
Dominic's voice became terrifyingly quiet.
“Where?”
“You'll have to ask Caleb.”
Hannah stared at the woman.
She had helped her down the hallway.
Held her arm.
Spoken to her.
How had she not noticed?
Because panic had done what panic always did.
Narrowed the world.
The sniper shot.
The broken window.
The screaming alarms.
Everyone had seen what they expected to see.
Dominic ripped the woman's earpiece out.
“Track this.”
Marco handed it to a technician.
Daniel paced.
“This is what they do. Confusion. Substitution.”
Hannah looked at him.
“How do you know?”
“Because Walter invented the method.”
“You worked with these people.”
Daniel stopped.
“I worked against them.”
“After helping them.”
He did not deny it.
Dominic’s phone rang.
Caleb.
He answered.
“Put my mother on.”
Caleb laughed softly.
“Dominic Vale. Finally.”
“Touch her and—”
“You'll do what? Kill me?”
Dominic's eyes became cold.
“Yes.”
Caleb laughed again.
“I don't think you understand the problem.”
“What problem?”
“Your mother isn't the leverage.”
Hannah’s phone buzzed.
A new photograph appeared.
Her station wagon.
Burning.
She stared.
Flames filled the windows.
Everything she owned was inside.
Clothes.
Her mother's last photograph.
Birth certificate.
Letters.
Blankets.
Her life.
Hannah made no sound.
That frightened Dominic more than screaming might have.
Caleb spoke through the phone.
“Hannah, are you watching?”
She took Dominic’s phone.
“Yes.”
“I warned you to stay in your car.”
“You burned it.”
“You chose the wrong family.”
Hannah looked at the flames.
Then something changed.
For two years, the car had represented everything she had lost.
Now Caleb had taken even that.
And instead of collapsing, Hannah felt suddenly free.
There was nothing left for him to threaten.
“You made a mistake,” she said.
Caleb paused.
“What?”
“You thought that car was the reason I survived.”
Hannah looked at Dominic.
“It wasn't.”
She ended the call.
Dominic stared at her.
“What are you doing?”
“Getting Evelyn back.”
Caleb demanded the brass key.
They arranged an exchange at an abandoned freight terminal by the river.
Dominic wanted twenty men.
Hannah argued for three.
“He expects an army.”
“He'll have one nearby.”
“Exactly. Let him watch the roads. We go through the old rail tunnel.”
Marco looked impressed.
Dominic frowned.
“How do you know about the tunnel?”
“I've slept everywhere.”
That ended the argument.
At midnight, Hannah, Dominic, Marco, and Daniel entered the tunnel.
Hannah carried the brass key.
Not the real one.
Marco had made a copy.
Dominic objected to Hannah coming.
She refused to stay behind.
“She got taken because of me.”
“She got taken because of Caleb.”
“Same result.”
The tunnel opened beneath warehouse seven.
They heard voices above.
Caleb.
Two men.
Evelyn.
Hannah crawled behind stacked pallets.
She saw Evelyn tied to a chair.
Bruised but alive.
Caleb stood beside her.
He looked exactly as Hannah remembered.
Older.
Still polished.
Still smiling.
“Where's Dominic?” Caleb called.
Hannah stepped out.
“Not here.”
Caleb stared.
Then laughed.
“You?”
“Me.”
“You have the key?”
She held it up.
“Let her go.”
“You really believe you're negotiating?”
“I think you need this.”
Caleb's smile vanished.
“Bring it.”
“Evelyn first.”
One of the guards moved toward Hannah.
Dominic remained hidden.
Hannah took one step backward.
“I drop this into that drain, nobody gets it.”
Caleb raised his hand.
The guard stopped.
Evelyn stared at Hannah.
“Hannah, don't.”
“It's fine.”
“It isn't.”
Caleb untied one of Evelyn's hands.
“Key.”
“Both hands.”
He cut the second restraint.
“Key.”
“Let her stand.”
Caleb grabbed Evelyn and pushed her forward.
Hannah held out the key.
Evelyn walked toward her.
Ten feet.
Five.
Caleb's hand moved toward his jacket.
Hannah shouted.
“Now!”
Lights went out.
Marco killed the power.
Dominic moved in darkness.
A struggle erupted.
Hannah grabbed Evelyn and pulled her behind the pallets.
Gunshots cracked.
Wood splintered.
“Stay down!”
Dominic struck one guard.
Marco tackled another.
Daniel appeared at the side entrance.
Caleb ran.
Hannah saw him disappearing through the warehouse.
“He's getting away!”
Dominic chased him.
Hannah stayed with Evelyn.
Until Daniel looked at the key in Hannah's hand.
Then looked at Evelyn.
Something passed across his face.
Hannah saw it.
“What?”
Daniel said nothing.
“Dad?”
He backed away.
Evelyn whispered, “Daniel.”
Hannah looked between them.
“What is happening?”
Daniel reached inside his coat.
He pulled out a second brass key.
Identical.
Hannah stared.
“You had one.”
“Yes.”
“Then why did Evelyn carry hers?”
Daniel’s eyes filled with shame.
“Because there were always two vaults.”
Dominic returned without Caleb.
“What vaults?”
Daniel looked at him.
“One contains evidence against the Crown Syndicate.”
“And the other?”
Daniel stared directly at Dominic.
“The other contains evidence against the Vale family.”
Silence.
Dominic slowly turned toward his mother.
Evelyn closed her eyes.
May you like
“Hannah,” she whispered.
“There's something we should have told you before you saved me.”
