Chapter 11 - A Traitor Inside Carver’s House

Gideon smiled.
“You really do look at hands.”
Nadine stepped backward.
He looked almost exactly like Carver from a distance.
Up close, the differences were everywhere.
The eyes most of all.
Carver’s were controlled.
Gideon’s enjoyed fear.
“You killed my father.”
“Elias did.”
“For you.”
“For sixty million dollars.”
“You tried to kill me at fourteen.”
“You were an inconvenient beneficiary.”
Nadine kept him talking.
The bank cameras were recording.
But Gideon knew.
“You think your agents can hear us?”
He held up a jammer.
“No.”
Nadine’s heart sank.
Then she remembered something Carver had told her.
Never build a plan with one exit.
She had not.
Her second recorder was analog.
Hidden inside her coat.
Gideon demanded authorization.
Nadine refused.
He grabbed her wrist.
She looked at his hand.
“Carver promised never to touch me in anger.”
Gideon smiled.
“I’m not Carver.”
“I know.”
She drove her knee into him.
The bank door burst open.
Carver entered with federal agents.
Gideon reached for a weapon.
Dominic appeared from another entrance.
For one absurd second, Nadine’s current husband and former husband both aimed at the same man.
“Don’t shoot!” Nadine shouted.
They listened.
That surprised her most.
Gideon was arrested.
The evidence was complete.
Almost.
One mystery remained.
Who had planted the speaker inside Carver’s house?
Gideon refused to answer.
The answer arrived two nights later.
Nadine was feeding Ada when Amber entered.
“I need to tell you something.”
Nadine saw her sister’s face.
“No more half-truths.”
“I planted it.”
Nadine stared.
“Why?”
“My mother told me to.”
Elena.
The speaker had been designed to push Nadine toward the vault.
Elena had manipulated everything from the shadows.
Not the kidnapping.
Not Gideon.
But the clues.
The phone.
The photograph.
The voice outside the room.
Nadine confronted her mother.
“You could have called me.”
“I was afraid.”
“So was I.”
“I thought you wouldn’t trust me.”
“You were right.”
Elena began crying.
Nadine did not comfort her.
Not yet.
“You don’t get to manufacture danger so I’ll follow your plan.”
“I know.”
“No. You know now.”
Elena nodded.
For the first time, Nadine saw her mother not as a ghost or mastermind.
Just a flawed woman who had allowed fear to become control.
Exactly like Dominic.
Perhaps that was the real inheritance Nadine had spent her life escaping.
The next morning, divorce papers arrived.
Dominic had signed them.
No fight.
No custody ambush.
No hidden clause.
Nadine read the attached handwritten note.
I loved you badly. That does not mean you owe me another chance.
She folded it.
Then her phone rang.
The federal prosecutor.
“Nadine, Gideon made a deal.”
“What kind?”
“He gave us another name.”
“Whose?”
There was a pause.
“Someone still inside Carver’s organization.”
Nadine looked across the room.
Carver was holding Ada.
May you like
The prosecutor said the name.
And Nadine’s face went white.
