Chapter 2 - What Candace Knew

"Henry, stop."
Candace filled the screen.
She was sitting in their bedroom, close enough to the camera that Henry could see the exhaustion around her eyes.
Danny wasn't visible.
Neither was Kane.
"Call your people off," she said. "You're making this worse."
The video ended.
Henry immediately called her.
No answer.
Again.
Nothing.
He sent one message.
LET ME SPEAK TO DANNY.
The typing indicator appeared.
Stopped.
Appeared again.
Then:
HE'S FINE.
Henry typed:
LET ME HEAR HIS VOICE.
No response.
Across the world, Stuart stood beside him.
"Evacuation paperwork is moving," Stuart said. "Command knows enough to prioritize you."
"How soon?"
"Transport leaves in forty minutes."
Henry nodded.
Not fast enough.
But movement mattered.
Marcus remained on the secure line.
"Rachel's being detained, not arrested," he said. "Kane claimed unknown armed people were stalking his residence."
"My residence."
"I know."
"Why are the cops listening to him?"
"Because the responding supervisor is Lieutenant Paul Reddick."
"Should that name mean something?"
"It does now. Reddick supervised Kane for six years."
Henry looked at Stuart.
"So Francis was right."
"Looks that way."
Marcus had already contacted the county sheriff and Arizona Department of Public Safety.
But jurisdiction was messy, and Kane understood procedure.
He knew exactly how much confusion he needed.
"There's something else," Marcus said.
Henry waited.
"Rachel ran Kane through every database she legally could before they took her phone."
"And?"
"He isn't Candace's boyfriend of six weeks."
Henry's stomach tightened.
"What does that mean?"
"Records connect them almost two years ago."
Henry said nothing.
"Hotel registration in Flagstaff. Traffic stop outside Tucson. Both names documented."
Two years.
Henry had been deployed twice during that period.
"Are you sure?"
"Yes."
Henry remembered birthdays celebrated through screens.
Candace telling him she understood.
Candace telling him how proud she was.
Candace insisting Danny was doing great.
Two years.
But betrayal could wait.
Danny couldn't.
"What about the juvenile complaint against Kane?"
"Sealed."
"Can Rachel get it?"
"Not from the back of a patrol car."
Henry paced.
"Then find another way."
Marcus was silent.
"Already working on it."
Francis called again.
Her whisper was frantic.
"Henry, they're leaving."
"Who?"
"Travis and Candace."
Henry stood rigid.
"Danny?"
"I can't see him."
A dark pickup backed from the driveway.
Kane was driving.
Candace sat beside him.
"Is Danny in the truck?"
"I don't know."
Francis shifted position.
"Wait."
Henry heard her inhale.
"No."
"What?"
"Danny isn't with them."
Henry's blood went cold.
The truck disappeared.
The patrol cars followed.
Rachel's team remained detained on the sidewalk.
And Henry's seven-year-old son was apparently alone inside the house.
"Francis, don't enter."
"But—"
"Don't."
Marcus interrupted.
"County sheriff is four minutes away."
Henry almost laughed.
Four minutes.
Everything in his life had become measured in minutes.
"Watch the house."
Francis did.
One minute passed.
Then two.
Nothing moved.
At three minutes, Francis said, "Curtain."
"What?"
"Upstairs. Danny's room."
Henry leaned toward the speaker.
"I saw it move."
Then a small face appeared behind the glass.
"Danny."
Francis began crying.
Henry closed his eyes.
"Stay with him."
The sheriff's vehicle arrived without sirens.
Two deputies approached Francis first.
She showed them the video.
Their demeanor changed immediately.
One requested emergency medical services.
The other went to Henry's door and knocked.
"Danny Winters?" he called.
No answer.
Again.
Nothing.
The deputy tried the handle.
Locked.
Francis shouted from her yard.
"He's upstairs!"
The deputy looked toward the window.
Danny appeared again.
He pressed both hands against the glass.
The deputy shouted, "Danny, can you come downstairs?"
The boy shook his head.
Henry saw it through Francis's camera.
Why couldn't he come downstairs?
The deputy asked again.
Danny lifted one hand.
Then pointed behind him.
Someone else was inside.
Henry's throat closed.
"Marcus."
"I saw."
The deputy moved away from the door.
His partner circled toward the rear.
Henry watched helplessly.
Seconds passed.
Then a crash came from inside.
Danny vanished from the window.
The deputies moved.
The rear deputy shouted.
The front deputy forced entry.
Francis's camera lost sight of them.
Henry heard voices.
A command.
Another crash.
Then silence.
"Francis?"
"I can't see!"
Henry gripped the desk.
Thirty seconds.
Forty.
Then the front door opened.
A deputy emerged carrying Danny.
Henry's son had his arms locked around the deputy's neck.
Alive.
Henry nearly collapsed.
"Thank God," Stuart whispered.
Danny was transferred to paramedics.
Francis rushed toward him only after deputies waved her forward.
She held the phone near Danny.
"Danny," Henry said.
His son's eyes found the screen.
For one terrible second, Danny simply stared.
Then his face crumpled.
"Dad?"
Henry had treated men with their legs missing without letting his voice break.
Now it broke on one word.
"Buddy."
Danny began sobbing.
"Come home."
"I'm coming."
"Now."
"I am."
Danny looked over his shoulder.
"Don't let Travis come back."
"He won't touch you."
"Promise?"
Henry swallowed.
"I promise I'm coming for you."
The paramedic asked Francis to step aside.
Henry wiped his face.
"Was someone else inside?"
Marcus was already checking.
A deputy emerged again.
This time with a man in handcuffs.
Not Kane.
Henry didn't recognize him.
Mid-fifties. Thin. Gray hair.
"Who is that?"
Marcus said, "Working on it."
Francis zoomed carefully.
The stranger turned toward her.
His expression wasn't angry.
It was frightened.
A deputy put him into a vehicle.
Then another deputy walked out carrying a cardboard file box.
Henry stared.
"What is that?"
Francis moved closer.
The lid had opened slightly.
Inside were photographs.
Documents.
And what looked like multiple phones.
The deputy noticed Francis filming and closed the lid.
Henry's evacuation transport was announced over the hospital speaker.
Stuart grabbed Henry's bag.
"Time."
Henry nodded.
Before leaving, he called Marcus.
"I need Danny protected."
"County is taking him for examination. Francis can accompany him until child services determines placement."
"Do not let Candace take him."
"Already filed emergency notice."
Henry started toward the transport area.
Then Marcus said, "Henry."
Something in his voice stopped him.
"What?"
"We identified the man they arrested inside your house."
Henry waited.
"Name's Elliot Crane."
"Who is he?"
"Retired police records clerk."
Henry frowned.
"Why was he in my house?"
"That's what we're trying to understand."
Marcus paused.
"But Rachel just got her phone back, and she found something before Kane had her detained."
"What?"
"The sealed juvenile complaint against Kane."
Henry tightened his grip on his bag.
"Who filed it?"
Marcus didn't answer immediately.
May you like
Then he said:
"Your wife."
