Chapter 1 - The Ashes of Trust

How far would you go if the person who swore to love you forever sold your twin babies for five million dollars and framed you for murder? Most people believe marriage is built on trust, but my marriage to Julian was built on a web of lethal lies. Standing in the middle of our grand living room, holding a signed divorce paper and a police warrant, I realized my entire life was a lie designed to erase me.
My name is Eleanor Vance. Ten years ago, I was just a woman deeply in love with Julian Croft, an ambitious real estate mogul who treated me like a queen. We built a life, an empire, and brought beautiful twin boys into the world—Leo and Oliver. But love blinds you to the viper coiling around your ankle. On a stormy night six years ago, while I was recovering in a hospital bed from a near-fatal car crash, Julian did the unthinkable. He didn't just walk away; he signed away our two-year-old twin sons to an underground adoption ring in exchange for the capital to save his failing tech venture. When I woke up from my coma, the nursery was empty, and Julian sat by my bedside crying crocodile tears, swearing that our boys had perished in the accident alongside the vehicle that burned into ash.
I was shattered. Broken beyond repair, I spent years drowning in grief while Julian built his empire higher on the blood of our children. When my heart finally began to heal, a smooth-talking attorney named Marcus Vance entered my life. Marcus was charming, protective, and seemed like the savior sent to piece my broken soul back together. I fell for his soft promises and gentle touches, believing God had finally given me a second chance at love. I married Marcus, giving him my complete trust, my heart, and access to my family estate.
What I didn't know was that Marcus wasn't my savior—he was Julian’s silent partner.
The nightmare crashed down on me today. I stood in our penthouse, staring at the hidden safe behind the painting in Marcus’s private study. The door was left slightly ajar. Inside wasn't money or stock options; it was a thick manila folder labeled Project Orphan. My hands trembled as I opened it. There were photos of my twin boys, alive, growing up in separate foster homes across the country. Beneath the photos were bank transfer statements signed by Julian, co-signed by Marcus, detailing the exact price my husband and my lover had put on my children's lives.
Before I could even process the horror, the front door clicked open. Marcus walked in, accompanied by Julian. Neither of them wore expressions of remorse; they looked at me like a nuisance that had finally outlived its usefulness.
"You were never supposed to find that, Eleanor," Marcus said, his voice cold, devoid of the warmth he had used to deceive me for three years. "You should have remained the grieving mother. It was much easier to control you that way."
"You monster!" I screamed, tears scalding my cheeks. "They were my babies! How could you sell my sons? How could you sleep in my bed knowing what you did?!"
Julian stepped forward, adjusting his designer cuffs with a chilling calmness. "Your father’s estate was worth eighty million, Eleanor. You think a man like me was going to share that with a woman whose family treated me like dirt? The crash was supposed to kill you. When you survived, Marcus and I adapted. We got the cash for the twins, used your family legacy to fund our mergers, and now... well, now you’re simply in the way again."
"The police will find out! I will burn your lives to the ground!" I raged, moving toward the door.

Marcus stepped into my path, a cruel smile twisting his face. He held up a vial and a syringe. "The police won't investigate a tragic suicide, my love. A grieving mother, driven mad by guilt and hallucinations, finally breaking under the weight of her past. It’s a compelling story. The media will eat it up."
They lunged at me. Survival instinct took over. I smashed a heavy bronze statuette into Marcus’s jaw, knocking him back, and thrust my elbow into Julian’s throat. Dropping the folder into my bag, I ran out of the penthouse into the pouring rain, driving like a madwoman into the darkness of the night. I was no longer just a victim. I was a mother fighting for the children who were stolen from her, and I would tear down heaven and earth to find them.
