Chapter 3 - Into the Shadows

The rain returned on the night before the DNA results were due, beating a relentless rhythm against the tin roof of St. Jude's.

Inside the dark hallway, Maya woke to the soft click of her dormitory door opening. She sat up, her heart instantly dropping into her throat. Instincts forged by years of hyper-vigilance screamed at her that something was wrong.

A tall figure stepped into the doorway, silhouetted against the weak emergency light of the corridor. It wasn't Mrs. Gable, nor was it the gentle, sorrowful woman who claimed to be her mother. It was a man holding a flashlight, his heavy leather boots squeaking on the wet floorboards.

"Maya," a low, gravelly voice rasped.

The voice.

Maya’s breath caught in her chest. The voice from six years ago. The voice from the trunk of the car. The dark wall of her amnesia shattered completely, unleashing a wave of vivid, horrifying clarity. This was the man who had dragged her away from her bedroom, the man who had abandoned her at St. Jude's with strict instructions to keep her quiet.

"Get up," the man grunted, reaching into his heavy coat. "We’re taking a little trip."

"No!" Maya screamed, scrambling backward over the mattress, knocking a heavy wooden chair to the floor with a loud crash.

"Shut up, kid!" The man lunged forward, grabbing her ankle with a iron grip.

Maya kicked violently, her sneaker catching him squarely across the bridge of his nose. The man roared in pain, staggering back, wiping blood from his face. Maya didn't hesitate. She threw herself off the bed, sprinted past him into the hallway, her bare feet slapping against the cold linoleum.

"Help! Mrs. Vance! Help!" she shrieked, her voice echoing through the hollow corridors of the building.

Down in the visitor’s wing, Eleanor—who had been resting fitfully on a small sofa—instantly bolted upright at the sound of the child's scream. She didn't hesitate. Sprinting toward the staircase, her heart hammering against her ribs, she met the intruder at the landing.

The man was dragging a struggling Maya down the stairs.

"Let go of my daughter!" Eleanor screamed, throwing her entire weight into the man.

The sudden impact caught the kidnapper off balance. He tumbled down the remaining steps, crashing heavily onto the hard marble floor of the foyer. Maya scrambled away, throwing herself into Eleanor’s arms. Eleanor held the girl tight, wrapping her coat around Maya's shaking frame, shielding her body with her own.

"It's okay, baby, I've got you, I've got you," Eleanor sobbed, pressing her face into Maya’s hair.

Before the intruder could regain his feet, the front doors of St. Jude’s were kicked open. Flashlights blared into the foyer as a squad of local police officers, alongside Eleanor’s private security detail, swarmed the entrance with weapons drawn.

"Freeze! On the ground! Hands where we can see them!"

The kidnapper, pinned under the bright lights and bruised from the fall, raised his bloody hands in surrender.

Among the officers stepped a tall man in a tailored suit, holding a sealed envelope. It was Dr. Harrison, the head of the private genetic laboratory, accompanied by Eleanor's lead attorney.

"Mrs. Vance," Dr. Harrison said, his voice ringing with absolute certainty above the chaos. "The rush results are in."

Eleanor didn't look at the paper. She just held Maya closer, feeling the small, steady heartbeat of the child against her own chest.

"Read it," Eleanor commanded quietly.

"The DNA markers between you and the child known as Maya show a 99.99% match," Dr. Harrison announced. "She is, without a doubt, your daughter, Sophia Vance."

The kidnapper scoffed from the floor as the police handcuffed him. "You think you won, Eleanor? You think this was just me?"

Eleanor stepped forward, her gray eyes burning with cold, fierce fury. "I know who paid you. I recognized your face the moment you fell down those stairs. You were my brother-in-law Richard’s personal chauffeur six years ago."

The man’s mouth snapped shut, his face turning ghostly pale.

"The police are already at Richard's estate executing an arrest warrant," Eleanor’s attorney added smoothly. "His bank records, the offshore wire transfers, and now this break-in—he will spend the rest of his natural life behind bars."
