Chapter 3 - The Third Man

Luca ran.
Eva followed.
Victor shouted behind them.
The stairwell echoed with footsteps.
Luca reached the landing.
Empty.
“Matteo!”
No answer.
Eva touched Luca's arm.
“Listen.”
Footsteps below.
They descended.
One floor.
Two.
The emergency exit opened into the hotel loading area.
A black SUV accelerated away.
Luca caught only the final digits of the license plate.
Matteo was gone.
Victor reached them.
“I warned you.”
Luca turned so quickly Victor stepped backward.
“You knew.”
“I suspected.”
“You let him stand beside me.”
“I needed proof.”
“You used me as bait.”
Victor's expression remained steady.
“So did Eva.”
Luca looked at her.
Eva didn't deny it.
“I came tonight because of my father's journal.”
“What did it say?”
She hesitated.
Luca laughed bitterly.
“Still protecting secrets?”
“I'm protecting myself.”
“From me?”
“From everyone.”
She removed a small key from inside her bracelet.
“The journal contained an address and a sentence.”
“What sentence?”
Eva looked at him.
“If Moretti's son survives, give him the key.”
Luca stopped.
“My father knew yours?”
“Apparently better than either of us knew.”
Victor said, “Queens.”
Eva nodded.
“The storage facility.”
Luca looked toward the street.
“We go now.”
Victor objected.
“Meridian will expect that.”
“Good.”
Eva stared at him.
“You want them following us?”
“I want them somewhere I can see them.”
They left through a service exit.
Luca called a driver nobody on his primary security team knew.
Twenty minutes later, an old black sedan collected them.
No armored SUV.
No convoy.
No radios.
Just Luca, Eva, Victor, and a driver who had worked for Luca's mother for fifteen years.
The ride to Queens was silent.
Eva sat beside Luca.
The blue gown looked absurd inside the plain sedan.
After several minutes, she said, “You really didn't know your father was murdered?”
“No.”
“I'm sorry.”
Luca looked out the window.
“Don't be.”
“You don't have to pretend with me.”
“I'm not pretending.”
She studied him.
“That's worse.”
Luca almost smiled.
Almost.
“My father taught me grief is private.”
“My father taught me secrets are poison.”
“And yet you keep several.”
“That lesson came too late.”
The storage facility appeared ahead.
They entered through a side gate.
Unit 417.
Eva unlocked it.
Inside were ordinary boxes.
Furniture.
Books.
A broken lamp.
Luca looked around.
“This is what people are killing for?”
Eva walked to an old wooden desk.
“My father's.”
She ran her fingers underneath.
Click.
A hidden drawer opened.
Inside was a metal case.
Victor exhaled.
“I never knew.”
Eva inserted the key.
The case opened.
Documents.
Photographs.
A flash drive.
And two sealed envelopes.
One said EVA.
The other:
LUCA MORETTI.
Luca stared at his name.
The handwriting was Antonio's.
His father had written it.
Eva opened hers first.
She read silently.
Tears appeared.
“What?”
She handed it to Luca.
Marco had written that Antonio Moretti was his closest ally.
Together they had discovered Meridian, a network built by powerful businessmen and corrupt officials who profited from organized crime while keeping their own hands clean.
They had planned to expose it.
Someone betrayed them.
Marco died first.
Antonio spent years quietly collecting evidence.
Then he died too.
Luca opened his envelope.
Son,
If you're reading this, I failed.
Trust Marco's daughter.
Do not trust the man who tells you he was protecting me.
The evidence is not in this box.
The box tells you where to look.
Luca reread the sentence.
Victor moved closer.
“What else?”
A handwritten coordinate.
And one name.
Luca's expression changed.
Eva saw it.
“Whose name?”
Luca folded the paper.
“Salerno.”
Victor froze.
“What?”
“Your name.”
Victor stepped backward.
“That makes no sense.”
Luca grabbed him.
“My father specifically warned me about a man claiming he protected him.”
“I did protect him!”
Luca slammed Victor against the wall.
“And there it is.”
“Luca, listen—”
Eva shouted, “Stop!”
Both men turned.
She held up a photograph from the case.
Antonio.
Marco.
Victor.
All three younger.
On the back:
THREE BROTHERS WITHOUT BLOOD.
Below it:
ONE OF US WILL BETRAY THE OTHERS.
Victor's face collapsed.
“Marco wrote that.”
Eva nodded.
“Did he mean you?”
“No.”
“Then who?”
Victor stared at the photograph.
“There was a fourth man.”
Luca remembered the scratched photograph.
“Matteo?”
Victor shook his head.
“Matteo was a kid then.”
“Who?”
A sound came from outside.
Metal scraping concrete.
Luca killed the light.
Everyone went silent.
Footsteps.
More than one person.
Victor whispered, “They followed us.”
Luca moved behind the door.
Eva crouched behind the desk.
The unit door began rising.
A man's shoes appeared.
Then trousers.
Luca waited.
The door reached waist height.
He pulled the intruder inside.
A struggle.
Victor tackled another.
The driver joined.
Within seconds, two men were on the floor.
One escaped.
Luca grabbed the captured man.
“Who sent you?”
Silence.
Luca tightened his grip.
“Who?”
The man smiled.
“47-11.”
Eva went pale.
“What does it mean?”
The man looked directly at her.
“Your father's grave.”
Luca froze.
The intruder continued.
“Forty-seven feet from the gate. Eleven rows down.”
Eva whispered, “No.”
The man laughed.
“You've been looking in storage units while the truth was buried with him.”
Victor stepped forward.
“What truth?”
The man looked at Victor.
“You already know.”
Then headlights flooded the unit.
Police sirens.
Victor cursed.
“They called the police.”
Luca looked at the documents.
“We can't leave these.”
Eva stuffed the letters and flash drive into her bag.
Victor grabbed the photographs.
The driver opened the rear service door.
They escaped seconds before police entered the facility.
In the car, Eva's hands trembled.
“My father's grave.”
Luca took her hand.
She looked at him.
For the first time, neither pretended the touch meant anything else.
“We'll find out,” Luca said.
Victor stared through the windshield.
“No.”
Luca looked at him.
“What?”
“We shouldn't go there.”
“Why?”
Victor's face was gray.
“Because Marco wasn't buried alone.”
Eva stopped breathing.
Victor turned toward her.
“The coffin beneath your father's doesn't belong to anyone in your family.”
Eva whispered, “Whose is it?”
Victor opened his mouth.
Luca's phone rang.
Matteo.
Luca answered.
No greeting.
Matteo was breathing hard.
“Boss, don't go to the cemetery.”
“Where are you?”
“They took my sister.”
“Who?”
“I don't know.”
“Matteo.”
“Listen to me. The third man in that photograph wasn't me.”
“I know.”
“I scratched his face out twelve years ago.”
Luca went still.
“Why?”
“Because your father made me promise.”
“Who was he?”
Matteo began to answer.
Then another voice came through the phone.
An older man's voice.
Calm.
Familiar.
“Hello, Luca.”
Luca's blood turned cold.
He knew that voice.
He had heard it throughout his childhood.
The man had attended his father's funeral.
May you like
The man had hugged him beside Antonio Moretti's coffin.
And Luca finally understood who the third man was.
